I used to love going to the music store to buy new CDs (well, as long as I had money) but anymore I get almost everything on the web. It\'s just another one of those things that computers have completely changed for me. Frankly, it doesn\'t bother me either ~ In fact, I like things better this way. At least I still have the option to go "on foot" if I want to. Do you still like to buy the CDs from the store, or do you get your music online? If online, what service do you use?
-
Offline.
Latest CDs I bought;
The Very Best of Jimi Hendrix
Pigface - Fook it up
I buy CD\'s alot. I also *acquire* alot too.
(BTW: This is stepping on unwanted turf on these forums)
-
My offline collection is bigger, simply because I\'ve yet to convert everything into MP3 format. Right now, I am around six gigs of MP3\'s - but I have well over 500 cd\'s...
As for this being "unwanted turf" - as long as we don\'t go namking Kazaa and talk about stealing things, it\'s fine. There are plenty of legit MP3 sites out there.
-
I\'ve converted every one of my 300+ CDs in to MP3 format, so my online collection\'s a bit larger... at 9 gigs, it still fits on 2 DVDs :p
I\'m going to have to get around to doing them all in ogg one day, but the last time I converted everything into MP3 it took me almost 2 months of daily ripping/compressing.
-
I do mine slowly. Will convert a couple cds here and there. My main problem is, with all these MP3\'s, I still find myself hitting next, even when iTunes is on shuffle.
-
My latest cd purchase was Facelift by Alice in Chains, bout time I but that cd.
And my online collection is around 3 gigs
-
My online music collection is bigger, since I convert just about all my CD\'s into MP3 format. The speakers connected to my computer are better than the ones connected to my stereo anyway, so it makes sense to listen to them here.

about 500 retail cd\'s, been shrinking for years. last cd i bought was "hail to the thief - radiohead", dun remember before that
780GB MP3 collection, grows everyday. wont be happy till its a TB
-
WHat do you use to rip your collection? I need to do that. I have a few hundred discs myself and would like to do the same.

I have more mp3s than CDs, even though I had lost all of my mp3s in an unavoidable format. :( Gonna back up my collection this time.

Just curious: How much HD space do you have?
And how many mp3s does that equal out to?
-
Online by far.. I own maybe 2-3 CDs? :)
-
I have S@#T loads of singles. As for mp3s. Probably more of them then the cds.
-
I never buy a single, unless I really love the band / singer and want the b-sides.
Example: I have around 70-80 Tori Amos cds. All her main cds, a lot of the singles and import singles. Not to mention soundtracks and live bootlegs.
-
I only tend to buy singles. Only have a few albums. I mainly wanna hear a song before buying it. I can\'t stand albums that have 12 songs and only 1 of them is decent.

What kind of music do you listen to? I think someone who listens to pop or rap is more likely to buy singles, as opposed to someone who listens to metal, alterntive and so on.

It\'s okay. You should see my shrine. I also have all her videos / some tour stuff / rare LP\'s / Autographs / rare box sets (My pride is one that only 250 was made). The list goes on and on. Not to mention me buying her newest cd last week at midnight.

I\'m a loser, it\'s okay!

Yeah, I don\'t believe in free file sharing, that\'s for sure. If you use a free-file sharing service, you run the risk of getting a virus, a bad file, or a lawsuit. Plus, downloading all those files to listen to them is cumbersome. Not all subscription-based services are convenient either. iTunes only lets you preview 30 seconds of a track, then you have to buy it for 99 cents and then download it to hear the whole thing. I use Rhapsody, which is great because I get unlimited listening to just about anything I can think of, and it\'s cheap. Sometimes there\'s just no substitute for getting the commercial CD from an artist whose music you know you\'re going to really like. But if you just want music playing all day and you\'re usually around a computer, you can\'t beat something like Rhapsody.
-
Here\'s what I\'m referring to, btw -->http://www.bestbuy.com/rhapsody. I\'ve had a lot of fun with it and the trial is free, so try it if you get the chance. I don\'t think there are more than 4 or 5 of these services out right now, but I\'ll just bet there\'s going to be a ton of them before long. When you think about how many people use computers now, it makes more sense to have all your music right there in front of you at the click of a mouse, don\'t you think?

They are already popping up everywhere, but there doesn\'t seem to be one single reliable source on rating these services.
One big hurdle these services will have to get over is selection. Someone like me, won\'t even consider buying a single track off them, because 99 percent of the time, they don\'t carry the music I listen to. Selection will be the key.

Well, I don\'t know about you, but there isn\'t much new music these days that I care for ~ at least as far as popular music goes. With the exception of a few emo bands like Coldplay, Travis, Guster, etc., anything new these days is based on image, lifestyle or attitude, rather than actual musical inspiration. Metal, Rap, Pop, and most country and rock have become a process of selling image and attitude for as much $$$ as possible to whomever will pay... anyone from advertisers to the mall rats. that\'s why most commercial music comes and goes relatively quickly. Only the artists whose music is truly based on the joy of the music itself are the ones who have a chance of lasting.
