Title: Speaking of new cars...
Post by: GigaShadow on December 03, 2003, 11:24:05 AM
The time has come where I must get a new car.  Originally I was going to go with another VW or an Audi, but since by brother in law works for Ford I am going to use his D plan to get a huge discount on either an Explorer or a Mustang Mach 1... can\'t decide which one... I know they are two entirely different cars and there lies my dilemma.

The Explorer would be more practicle - more room for hauling hockey gear, the kid and the wife.  On the other hand they are sort of boring.

The Mustang would be fun to drive, but not really useful for long trips.  I almost feel like I am going through my mid life crisis ;) in trying to make a decision.

Our other car is a Pontiac Vibe which my wife drives and we use that to go to Lowe\'s and grocery store...

Basically I can get a 32K car for about 23K... this is why I am doing this.  Any suggestions or doses of reality will be appreciated :)

If I had to buy a Ford, the only models I would consider would be the SVT Mustang Cobra or the SVT Focus (3 door hatch).

Why choose the Mach 1 @ 305hp when you can take the Cobra @ 390hp?  That choice would be obvious for me.  At 170hp, the Focus seems like a weird selection for many people, but there are many aftermarket parts available for it, and I just enjoy the idea of a high powered compact hatch.  They do look sort of cool also.  They remind me of Markko Martin\'s WRC car.

I wouldn\'t even consider an Explorer, but that\'s just me.  I hate SUVs.  I do think that if you wanted an SUV, you could do much better than a Ford model.

I was going between BMW and the Ford Expedition.

I settled on BMW and here is why.  SUVs value drop like FREAKING ROCKS!!!!!

I bought my SUV for 13 grand and a year and a half later it was worth 5.  The second you drive away in an SUV it is worth so much less.

BUT, for practicallity purposes I probably should have gotten the SUV, but I drive so many miles that the gas would have killed me.

So I think we may end up getting rid of my other car and buying a truck.  Then I will be happy all the way around.

Get a van. Most SUV\'s seats only 4 to 5 people - JUST LIKE CARS! A van\'s value stays higher longer and MPG is a bit better.

Cobra\'s are hard to find around here and the gas mileage is even worse than the Mach I.  Normally I wouldn\'t care, but 30 miles to work one way will add up.  I was going to consider the Focus, but the thing looks pretty similiar to the Vibe.

I thought about a truck, but trucks aren\'t me - I hate driving them.  SUV\'s do drop in value pretty quickly, but most domestic and foreign cars take huge hits when you drive them off the lot anyway.  I am not too concerned in depreciation as I will pay it off before I trade it in.

EDIT:  Hmmm the gas mileage is not that much different... let me look into this some more.

I\'d consider a Nissan Maxima.  Sporty, creature comforts, love you long time, and 4-door if you need it.  The only SUVs I\'d buy is the Xterra or an FX45.  Me biased?

I love how the Focus looks and almost bought one, but for a man of your stature you need something bigger. :)

Mach 1
305hp @ 5800, 320 lb-ft @ 4200
mpg: 17 city, 26 hwy
MSRP $29,590

Cobra
390hp @ 6000, 390 lb-ft @ 3500
mpg: 17 city, 24 hwy
MSRP $35,200

I wouldn\'t pick the Mach 1 unless you need the ghey racing stripe.  :)

Ford?! Well, I guess it\'s ok b/c you\'re getting it for the ACTUAL value of the car......eventhough it\'s probably still overpriced.

The new Jettas are cool, but the impala\'s and monte carlo\'s...yum yum...

OMG, are you referring to these heaps of shit?  Would you buy one of these things over a Mustang????  I wouldn\'t trust a Chevy to get me 50 feet beyond the dealer\'s parking lot.  :(

Hey I happen to own a 93 chevy corsica and it\'s a piece......wait yeah ok you\'re right.  In all fairness my car has been pretty good to me.  It\'s just not the smoothest running car on the road.

The new Jetta\'s are horrible - ever since they put the chrome accents on it... that is the precise reason I am not getting another one.  The new Golf V\'s are terrible too, but they won\'t be out for another year or so...

Core is right about Chevy\'s - I can\'t stand them.  After all they came out with the IROC
