FAT will cost ya! :p

sounds like if they ship and sell the cards unformatted they can get around it.

Then they can charge ~me~ when I format it. :)
-
God I hate M$. Don\'t they have enough money?
-
There\'s nothing special about FAT; in fact it kind of sucks.
There are plenty of other filesystems camera manufacturers can use instead of FAT, FAT32, NTFS, etc etc.

You know why you hate MS? Because the general public says to hate MS.
Come on, no they can\'t have enough money. They are a company and the digitial camera industry is a viable industry to invest in.
-
They\'re not investing. They\'re leeching off the industry by charging a license fee for their shitty FAT file system. The camera manufacturers will just switch to some other file system, and MS will be no better off.

Hmm, and here I thought it was because of their shitty software through the years, the monopol they try to get on everything and their generally shady business methods. :)

It\'s not about money, it\'s about control. They want their paws in everything and anything they can.
-
It\'s funny how sometimes no matter what people do, you see them as evil and hate them.
THey developed a file system.
They have a patent on the file system.
THey have put this file system in millions of computers.
THe digital camera industry in order to make it streamline with computers of today decide to use that file system.
Why shouldn\'t they get paid?

It\'s like building a railroad. Say dude 1 puts rail road tracks from Maine to Florida. He takes people up and down the tracks and charges money for it. But then dude 2 builds a trolley. He only wants to go from North Carolina to South Carolina.
"Hey, there are tracks there!!! May as well use them since they are already there."
I\'m guessing dude 1 who laid the tracks would be a little pissed that someone else is making money on his tracks and not helping pay for the tracks he built.

I\'m willing to bet that 3 1/2 floppies that come preformatted are paying. I remember back when they were more expensive than unformatted. I always assumed it was because of the formatting process, but this could certainly be the cause as well.
-
Tell me vid, what methods did they use to build this file system. What did they base it off?
-
MS is infamous for its bullying business tactics. Hence the lawsuits in Europe and America (well, sort of).
Bill Gates knew he\'d be unpopular so he gave away billions to charity...and made sure everyone knew about it. Publicity and charity = lemmings saying "what a nice guy". He can\'t buy my opinion. :)

I don\'t know and I don\'t care.
Fact is his operating system is what made it widespread over the world.
-
People are upset that only now, since 1976, that it will cost a fee. Although these digital memory cards just got mainstream about 5 years ago.
My opinion on this matter is this : it\'s MS\'s patent. They can charge you. BUT....they should have done it before.
But look on the bright side - it\'ll only cost you an extra 25 cents per card.
-
Actually I think the price is the only thing I have issue with. THat is one hell of a lot of cards. I can\'t imagine they need to charge more than a nickel.

Maybe they need the money? :p

gotta recoup their Xbox losses somehow ;)
-
*note to self : must not buy*

Microsoft is FAR from the worst company and people still hate them the most.
Why isn\'t it cool to hate pharmaceutical companies?
-
Bunch of whiney bitches.
Who cares what they ripped it off? They are a company, for god sake.
-
Yeah! Whiney bitches! :p
It\'s only 25 cents extra. I think. Anyway, in 2 years, I\'ll be posting about how MS will be merging its two new acquisitions : Canon and Nikon. :D
-
And how is MS different from any other company?
Bottom line is the Almighty Dollar...

Under handed tactics, bullying, buying off the competition....the usual things that get them sued by governments in Europe and the US.
-
I think maybe somepeople dont really understand the whole copyright issue as for a monoply why shouldnt microsoft have the right to bundle their products toghether.... When you buy a 12 pack of Coke nobody say "THATS A MONOPOLY!!! Coke should have to put a pepsi and a rootbeer in there!"
-
That was a terrible comparison, Cyrus.

BWAHAHAHAH! It sure was! I was laughing so hard I forgot to respond to it!
-
Bah..... No it wasnt it is the same thing they said to microsoft Netscape made a huge fit because it bundeled internet explorer and not navigator with win xp. I cannot help if you people have no idea about what the whole thing was really about.
-
No actually they are right Cyrus.. That was a bad comparison. You should have stuck with my train idea.... ;)
-
Maybe a Coca Cola Train?
-
Yeah, coca cola built a train and uses it to deliver all of their coke. Now why should they have to take pepsi?
Nope, still sucks.
-
THE PAIN TRAIN IS COMING WAHOOOOoOoOOo

I see your point but its not the general public opinion. I\'ve always hated Microsoft. They enter a lot of industries, like the gaming industry, buy out their competition, their windows (except 2000 and XP) suck ass and they leech off all they can in other industries like the camera industry. Yes, they do do some good but they are just getting too powerful.
-
How does XP suck ass?
It does everything I need it to do and it never crashes on me.

Reread my post vid. I specifically said EXCEPT XP.
their windows (except[/b] 2000 and XP) suck ass
My school uses XP and for once, the laptops in my school are good. They up until this year used 95. Slow as hell. But those were the computers, not the windows.
-
Doh.... NEvermind. I was thinking you were pointing at 2000 and XP.
<--- tired bastard
-
I know it\'s becoming "cool" to defend MS after they\'ve taken so much heat during the years. But you know what? They ****ing deserve it. I\'m not gonna say "oh you whiney bitches, MS is a real nice company, please don\'t hate them". **** Microsoft. **** their business methods. **** anybody who says otherwise.
-
I\'m not defending Microsoft. I\'m defending the idea of making money on your idea.
-
imo, M$ are holding back a lot of advances, sense everything is based of them, little is untouched by MS.
Things aren\'t being developed as well or even as fast as they could be. Prices are high for software that shouldn\'t even has the price tag that’s set on it. XP, Office XP etc.
MS simply have to have control on everything, if they have control, they set the standards, in speed, in cost, in everything.. At least they haven\'t attacked the pc hardware scene much... yet!!
-
You think the automotive industry doesn\'t do the same thing? If they come out with what they are capable of now then what will they come up with for sales in the next ten years? The slow progression makes people always want more.
Don\'t you wonder why in this day in age there still isn\'t a cream that will stop hair growth?
Give me a break. It\'s impossible for me to believe there is no way to kill the hair follical.
I bet it\'s the razor industry pumping money somewhere to not have this wonder cream.
Well maybe not, but I still can\'t figure it out.
-
Ok, how many automotive companys control pretty much the standard in car manufacturing?
I can tell you which PC company does in software.... ;)
-
True. Just saying it\'s very normal to hold back.
-
Vid, atleast there is competition in the automotive industry. Come out with the cheaper, more efficient, fastest car. In the computer industry, its M$ and they are only concerned with money money money. They don\'t give a crap about their customers, they just want money and no competition.
-

I agree with you but that also means they can screw with the people as much as they can. If they had competition of another windows like program, like say Red Hat was now becoming big and making more programs, Microsoft have competition and would have to make competetive prices and their grasp on the market would be weakened. Just my two cents.

As if any company that had MS\' weight wouldn\'t throw it around...

Wal-mart has been accused of monopoly? GM too? I didn\'t know that! Tell us more!
-
Do you really think Walmart has a grasp on the retail market even close to what Microsoft has in the computer market?
I really don\'t think there is anything to compare Microsoft to when it comes to monopolies.
Bueller? Bueller?

Well, going by what Ashford said, Wal-Mart being th #1 Fortune 500 in the world (trading spots with GM) COULD a huge bully if they wanted.
-
here\'s a stat for ya
More people have shopped at walmart in the past year than have logged onto the internet.
I myself haven\'t stepped foot in a wal-mart in over a year. Sure, you may save a few bucks shopping there now... but just wait to see how it is when they are the only store in town.
-
I saw another mind blowing stat about Walmart concerning the percentage of exports from China. It was something ridiculous.
Like 10 or 15% of imports from China go to Walmart. I wish I could rmember the stat, but it was hard to believe knowing just how much crap comes out of China.
________
EDIT:
http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2003/1110/047_print.html
Here is it. 10%. Walmart is 1% of China\'s GDP. That\'s freaking amazing.
OK, maybe I should start a new thread because this is a left turn, but these are some stagering stats.
http://www.thecomplaintstation.com/w/_walmart/00000ad9.htm
"Wal-Mart, the largest importer in the world of goods made in China, uses several thousands of factories hidden across China. Wal-Mart refuses to release even the names and addresses of these factories to the American people. The largest country of origin for goods made for Kohl\'s is China. The "people\'s" republic of China has a greater disparity in wealth than even the U.S. -- with the bottom 20% of China\'s people controlling 5.5% of the wealth, while the top 20% control 52.3 percent There is no middle class in China. The government tax on the purchase of a new car is $1,205, while to install a phone costs $361, which is hardly affordable for workers in China being paid 3 cents an hour in factories producing goods for export to Wal-Mart. The Economic Policy Institute estimates that 870,000 jobs could be lost in the U.S. over the next decade due to the massive growing trade deficit with China. "
-
by the year 2010 Wal-mart will have a 50% share of the retail marketplace.
That scares the shit out of me
