Ok got a Ge force FX 5200 and don\'t want Half Life 2 to run like a slide show.
So ... i need to gets more BANG for my BUCK !!!!111```
what should i get ?
Requirments
it has to be AGP X8 & full Direct 9
Plus its got to be a sensible price.
-
I\'d wait until you really need it (say when HL2 is ready) and then get the best DX9 card for your money. If you were to buy now, I\'d probably recommend ATI - say, 9600 Pro or XT or something.
-
I\'m grabbing a 9800 Pro depending on how much I have left over after xmas. I\'m thinking 9700 pro is the LEAST you\'ll need to get HL2 running decntly.
-
ATI 9600 Pro if you are budget conscious... if not go with the 9800.
-
I have an old voodoo 2 card knocking about somewhere. :D
-
Listen to Sam: WAIT. by the time HL2 is released, either the current cards have gone down in price or 2nd gen DX9 cards appears.
-
theres a company thats got the 256mb 5200\'s for $99 im still debating if i should get it

Buy the fx5200 and god himself will strike you down. only joking :p but seriously they are HORRIBLE you can get something much better for even $99. skip it.
-
I agree, infact. I wouldn\'t go near any FX card. Just go ati radeon 9600 or above and you can\'t go wrong. With FX cards, it\'s a gamble.
-
The 5900 SE also looks interesting. It\'s quite a bit better than 9600XT. It even surpasses the 9800 Pro in some games.
EDIT: Oh, and it comes with full versions of Call of Duty and Ghost Recon.
-
got and got,
Any other reason why i\'d pay 590.00 + for the 5900 EE card when i can get a 9600pro for 302.00, a RADEON 9600XT for 356.00 or even a RADEON 9700 for 534?
:D
although i\'ll end up getting The Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800Pro Atlantis 128MB DDR TVO-DVI card for $650.00.
That\'ll keep me goin for awhile. :)
-
Souly Souly Souly... I dunno what whacked priced you Aussies got, but anywhere else the 9600XT and 5900XT/SE is on par price wise, but not performance wise, where the 5900 whoops ass. I wonder what ATi will do now to reclaim the performance crown in the middle end, where the money is made.
-
To be honest, i really don\'t see many people going the XT way, it\'s like the MX of Ti cards etc... I think most gamers would prefer the standard, even if they are cheap. You may end up suffering in the long run. Also i need to see some benchmarks of hte cards goin head to head. :) Which i haven\'t seen atm.
-
Souly x 3 again. Check out some benchmarks and even some reviews. The XT is just like the top end cards - it has the same features, it\'s just clocked slighty slower. So educate yourself before spewing the BS. ;)
EDIT: Here are some benchmarks:

You gotta forgive, Souly. He\'s from Aussie..They are still amazed by the mouse with a scroll wheel.
:D
-
My advice would be to wait for HL2 to come out, see how it runs on your card.. then pick a new one if necessary.
Buying now isn\'t a smart move with the next generation coming in the first half of 2004.
-
who says i\'m spewin bs.. XT cards are the MX cards of the DX9 series. They are the cheaper alternative. Sammy, i\'m seein red Xs
Personally i couldn\'t care less about Nvidia Vs ATI bs anymore. I\'ll get my 9800 card and be happy. :) If there\'s something better for the same price, i\'ll get that. :)
There\'s a mouse that runs around with a scroll wheel?

It\'s cheaper yes, but it has the same features. The only difference is a slighty lower clockspeed. So it\'s hardly the "MX cards" d00d.
Sammy, i\'m seein red Xs
[/B]
Well, not here. :)
-
sammy.... Listen carefully. They are the Cheaper, slower versions of the high end cards. Just as MX were to TI. (i\'m not saying to the extent of the MX cards) So, they are the MX cards of the dx9 series. I\'m not comparing there performance to MX cards, i\'m saying they are cheaper versions like the mx cards.. Understand yet?
-
So the GF XT cards are slower than the MX cards?
;) Wonder why Tom\'s Hardware and Anandtech don\'t have any news on the FX XT\'s.
-
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <--- another quality post by me. :)
-
I\'m Confused here, the XT line by ATI (9800XT) is the top end card, how is the XT clocked slower, it\'s the fastest core on .15 from ATI?

Both ATI and nVidia have XT lines now. Stupid marketing from nVidia\'s side.

Yes, I understand that they are slower. They have to be to be cheaper, otherwise they\'d steal all the thunder from the most expensive cards. The thing here is, that the performance is very close to the more expensive cards and it has the SAME features. That\'s very unlike the currect MX series (which is crap compared to the Ti cards). So if people were smart they\'d buy the XT instead. Hence the reason I also showed you the benchmarks. Have you seen them yet?
Basically their XT card is the new Ti4200 - only that you\'d have to clock the TI4200 (which was easily done in most cases) and it\'d compete with the high end cards, just for a (much) cheaper price. Basically it\'s the smart buyer\'s card.
-
yes i saw the benchmarks.. The XT cards are still pretty pricey. here anyway. I didn\'t say they were stripped to the level of MX, i just said they\'re the cheaper version like the mx.
