Today during class I was arguing with this white girl friend of mine. I have to say she is white because it\'s important to the story. Anyways, I was telling my friend David, who is also white, that it\'s good that he is taking Spanish because he would probably be able to go further in this country. The girl looked at me and said "no" She said "we\'re in America they should learn English" Yes and no, technically we\'re in North America, the U.S. isn\'t "America" I completely disagree with the "they should learn English" comment. I didn\'t read about the European settlers trying to commute with the Native Americans and try to learn their language. She said "we conquered them" No they claimed the land, and "lied to the people and stole it from them", I said. She just made the "no" motion with her head because she knows it\'s true. I don\'t believe that people should be made to learn Spanish. I do believe that most people have no choice. You can whine all you want but the truth of the matter is that there are alot more Spanish speaking people in this country than ever before. And if you even want to think about getting a better job or doing something different, knowing Spanish will help you plenty of times im sure.
-
Knowing Spanish will make it easier to talk to Spanish speaking people... Just like learning English will make it easier for Spanish speaking people to talk to me cause I sure as hell ain\'t learnin\' no Spanish!
that\'s it!
pretty basic.
-
Yes that\'s true.
But, stay with me in reality, if you go to your neighborhood wal-mart. What do you see? I also made a point about careers. Alot of Spanish speaking people learn English. They go on to have better jobs that those who don\'t. But then, the ones who don\'t know English turn out to be your customers. Who has the advantage, the Bilingual or Monolingual?

i agree. at my job when i check out some of job postings..besides them making sure you have a masters ,bachelor degree in everything..they also state "and bilingual a plus" ..it\'s called diversity.;)

I was at a youth forum for local high schools and an argument similar to this arose...
...Some pompous white boy said that they should be required to learn English... I argued that that was incredibly unfair, and if they needed to learn English they would make the initiative to learn it themselves.
Good thing I know Spanish... You need it here in the west.
-
Que bueno, me gusta ver que hay personas que todavia saben valorar lo que es la vida.
-
That is another thing though. If nobody was learning Spanish they would HAVE to learn English. But everwhere and everyone seems to be "adapting" and everywhere you go you meet the "buenos dia" white guy.
-
Yeah... So many Americans are so stupid... I could just hear them crying and moaning if they had to go to another country and be forced to learn another language.
-
Have you seen the trailer for that movie about the end of the world. Day after next or something. It shows all the Mexican Government "had to close down its border due to all the US refugees flooding the country"
-
this reminds me that in Highschool I had an A in Spanish and a D in English (the teacher hated me, beyond this year I ACEd every year of English), kind of ironic for a dirty White Boy
-
Well, I don\'t think it\'s unfair to demand that those who want to benefit from X society learns the language spoken in X. If they wanted to speak Spanish, then they could have stayed in Mexico or whereever. If you don\'t want to adapt, then stay home in your own goatfcuker country.

Thank you.
I work where a lot of spanish / mexican\'s have recently took up work and we can\'t understand them and I refuse to pay for spanish classes, just to understand them.
They came over here - they should learn the native language here.

My son knows 1 to 10 in spanish. Funny because now he never counts in english. It\'s always spanish.
I have absolutely no sympathy for spanish people in this country who dont know english. Or I should rephrase that. Spanish people who make no effort to learn any english. If I moved to France I would bust my ass to learn as much French as I could immediately.
Also, it makes a lot more sense to take Japanese than Spanish. There are a billion + people on the world who know Japanese. That would be a huge + on your resume if you got into the financial market or the trade industry.
No offense, but I don\'t aspire to talk to the patrons at friggen Walmart.

from your standpoint, yeah i feel any ethnic grp outside u.s. should learn english, just like we would have to learn their language if we moved over there. not being cruel or anything
but that\'s just what would happen. Now on a personal note, it
can\'t hurt knowing 2 languages or more as in the job field it can
be very helpful
now vid as far as talkin to patrons in walmart,..some of those patrons are hot! I guess some of them are. I heard on the news a while back somebody from either playboy or hustler wanted
some chicks from those stores be in their mag. i guess all those women can\'t be gruesome lumderjack shirt wearin ass scrathin
behemoths right? ;)
-
Actually Vid, it would be more wise to make an effort to learn Chinese or Mandarin.
Ni Hao.
-
Im totatally with vid If I move to germany I dont expect them to learn english so I can communicate I would need to learn german.
I also belive that we should learn spanish but not so much for the purpose of communication I belive at an early age it helps broden the minds ability to learn.
-
Dora the Explorer is a cartoon my kid watches. They totally intermix spanish and english. I was chatting with Logan last night and he started syaing spanish words. Pacinio (I don\'t know how it is spelled) which means little. He said that and Grande. I asked him what they meant and he said Little and big.
Dude is like a little sponge.
And yes I agree, Chinese is very important.
When I listen to the Chinese speak more than any other language I say to myself, "Dude? You can\'t tell me that was a sentence."
Yeah, I say "Dude" to myself.
-
pacino...lol its pequeno with a little ~ over the n don\'t know how to do that but oh well.
I want to take as many foreign language classes as I possibly can, it makes your resume look really good if you know more than one language.
-
All of us are immigrants and a lot of us have ancestors who didn\'t speak English when they arrived here... they knew they had to learn it to make a living and they did so. It is an insult to every generation that came to this country before 1960 that certain political action groups think that these new immigrants should be given everything from easy citizenship  to automatic jobs when they enter this country.
On a personal note, every new person I see at the Federal level in my line of work is a freaking immigrant. I can\'t even understand them half the time and the Federal Government is handing them jobs!?!?!?!
English should be our national language and if you "want" to learn or speak something different that is fine, but you will know the native language.
Sir Mistiq, before you try and portray the Spaniards as being the ambassadors of human rights during the era of colonialism, this might be a good time for you review how the Spanish - Cortez, Coronado and company treated the Native Americans they came across. They stole their land, their gold and basically committed genocide on the indian tribes that inhabited Central and South America...
-
I would like to learn spanish for fun, but I suspect I wouldn\'t have enough opportunity to become good at it. I have no interest in watching peliculas on telemundo, or saying "hola" to the checkout girl at the convenience market. Actually I wouldn\'t mind learning Chinese so I could meet some more FOB honeys.
At work I need to use nothing but english.

I wish i had the time and patience to learn all kinds of languages. The only one i kinda know is spanish due to school but i really want to learn Japanese. Eh.
We know you came here for benefits but you wont earn jack if you dont make the effort to adapt.

I never intended to do that. I know what they did. Those damn Europeans.
Anyways, I completely agree with you guys that the Spanish speaking people should learn English. But unlike Japanese, Spanish is a more broad language. Asians have to learn English b/c very few people outside their race knows this language. But honestly, if you can\'t talk to 90% of the people at walmart...who is at the disadvantage, the stubborns white guy, or the stubborn people that don\'t know English?
-
I pretty much have no tolerance for people that are here yet can\'t speak english. If you can\'t learn a countries native language when living there then I don\'t know what to tell you.
-
You can tell them, "Me llamo Bozco."

The only person I care to speak with at Walmart is the chick ringing me up. If she can\'t speak english then she shouldn\'t be working at a customer service position.
If you are insinuating that I should learn Spanish so I can speak to the customers at Walmart, well.. Um... Anyone who takes a foreign language at school to work customer service at Walmart should be shot.

Ermm… I think I can contribute a little to this Topic, pretty interesting BTW.
Of course, Spanish is becoming more and more important everyday. Just notice that the order of languages in the world according to number of speakers is:
1)Chinese
2)English
3)Spanish
What that means? Chinese is spoken by a lot of people, much more than English and Spanish, but it’s actually an unknown language outside Chine. Chine is a rather important country in terms of population and economy, but of “little importance in the international scene”.
English and Spanish on the other hand are widely spread over large territories on the earth. Many countries share both languages which makes an important point when you are able to speak both of them.
I can speak Spanish, but also English. I will never speak English such a native speaker, but they will never do so with the Spanish. That’s natural. Speaking these two languages will open you many doors, many job offers. Nowadays, English is over Spanish in terms of prominence. That’s crystal clear. But Spanish is now quite important in USA, day by day there are more Spanish speakers there. I few time, south USA will have an important number of Spanish, which will carry benefits to those who are able to speak both languages.
I must agree in the opinion that you should learn the native language you’re living in. You’re not forced, of course, but ethically speaking you may do it.
And GigaShadow, what’s the difference between the spanish colonizers taking the control of America in 15th and 16 century and you americans in Irak? I cannot see any difference: both are pathetic.
Merry Christmas

Where\'s Chine at?
-
Holy crap,
Welcome back Adan! :D
-
Adan, you are mixing apples and oranges when you compare the colonial era (appx. 1600-1800 AD) to what has and is happening in Iraq.
The Spanish you speak is the pure form Adan, not the bastardized form that they speak in Mexico. ;)

Mixing apples and oranges? In 1600, europeans (Spanish, Portuguese and Italians mainly) went to America (South and North) and did the following:
- Invade the land without any logical reason
- Killed the people they wanted
- Picked up the gold
- Established a domain
- Came back home
Now in Irak, USA does the following:
- Invade the land without any logical reason
- Kills the people they want
- Picks up the black gold
- Establishes a domain
- Comes back home
I can\'t see many differences. Spaniards remained there many years, but we don\'t know how many Americans will stay there because oil is a sweet reward.
Well, it\'s true that "my spanish" is not the same than latinoamérica one (;)) South America spanish is different to ours in the same way USA\'s english is quite different from England\'s one. In this case you will be the "bastarized speakers" and english the pure speakers. That\'s not the point. Language evolves because it\'s a natural skill. In the same way people from Japan is different to Frenchs physically speaking, languages that are separated evolves in different ways.
Just notice that even in your country you can distinguish different accents. And that\'s inside a country, imagine the differences in between a language separated by an ocean and 7000 kilometres.

Wow, that\'s a pretty naive statement.....
-> No logical reason? Dude is a known terrorist. They just announced two days ago that they have uncovered documents (Which would stretch 9 miles long btw, still lots to go through) that DIRECTLY link Saddam to Al Queida and DIRECTLY link him to 9/11.
-> Kills the people we want? Do you honestly think the US wanted to kill people? Wow.. That\'s just sad.
-> Picks up black gold? DUde, I haven\'t paid this much for gas ever. If we snagged their oil then why the F are we paying such high gas prices?
-> Establishes a domain? Aren\'t we trying to set up a viable system so we can get out of there? Give me a break.
-> Comes back home? Really? When?
-
I agree that Americans have butchered the English language. Not like anyone can understand a Scot either ;). I hate to pick on Mistiq... well thats a lie, I do like to pick on him... anyway, the point is look how he talked when he first came to the forum. It was laughable. Bling bling this and that...
As far as Iraq goes - what American would want to stay in Iraq rather than be back home? Don\'t try and turn this thread into the US colonizing Iraq because you are way off topic and furthermore you are just plain wrong.

It\'s very sad that you, americans, consider the war as a joke.

Fair enough - there is a whole thread on Saddams capture over in current events if you want to continue there.

The bottom line is that English is the established language for the US and it should be codified as such. Don\'t argue, it\'s the damned truth. On that note, I think being multilingual is fantastic.
I just think that if you\'re going to be in the US for a long amount of time.. a year or more.. you\'d best pony up and learn English as a second language before this place turns into the Tower of Babel. On a similar note, we\'ve got to stop illegal immigration before it gets any worse and re-establish Ellis Island. This can\'t go on much longer.

You leave Ashley alone!!!
Anyways, I never said that people shouln\'t learn English. My point is that even though there are alot of people who think this way, "you\'re in America LEARN ENGLISH!!" they are still the minoroty when you ask the general public. Will many people agree on it? Yes. But what matters is what is going on outside their little world, the US is changing...shouln\'t it\'s citizens?
-
I think if you immigrate (or run across the border) you ought to learn English eventually. But here in Texas and probably California you should learn a little Spanish too.
Giga, you verbally KO\'ed SirMystic btw

I dont know about no logical reason for the US-Iraq thing, but you know history repeats it\'s self. This is kind of an indirect way.

Maybe in your little nook of america. Anyone that I know that speaks English feels exactly how I do. If our taxes support your immigrant ass, leran the friggen language.
-
No, maybe it\'s because I live in a place where Spanish is the predominant language...I don\'t know that might be the reason. Have you guys tried asking white people that are trying to learn the language or know it? If you go ask everysingle white person that doesn\'t know the language...yeah they\'re going to agree with you. I can safely say that about 80 percent of the white people that go to my school, live in my neighborhood, and work at places around here speak spanish, or they attempt to speack spanish, or they know cuss words in Spanish.
-
80%? Sorry no. I know how to speak Spanish, my dad does, and so does my sister. And they will agree that if you immigrate or run across the border, you should learn to speak English.
Hey Mystic, just out of curiosity did you agree with Gonzalez to require Spanish textbooks for public schools?
-
Yes and No...Yes for all the kid\'s that just got into this country...and NO for like kid\'s that had their time to learn it. Yes if there are no bilingual classes. How are little kids supposed to learn English that way?
-
By only being surrounded by English materials...
-
The easiest way for one to learn a countries lanuage is to be immersed in it every day. My old german teacher said he never was that great with german till he lived there for 6 months, hell he started dreaming in german.
-
I write: "Maybe in your little nook of america. Anyone that I know that speaks English feels exactly how I do."
ANd you write:

Way to dissagree agreeingly...
It is all based upon the people you are around and live near. That is why you feel like Spanish is a needed language. And it is for you because of where you live. Most of the country is English. I\'m willing to bet that if you polled english speaking people in the US, at least 90% of them would have no sympathy for Spanish speaking people who have lived in this country for a decent amount of time.
THe problem is that people come into this country and live in the pockets they are comfortable in. The spanish speaking communities.
They have no need to learn english. Here in Tampa most of the communities like this are vegetable pickers (Tomato, strawberry, orange, corn, squash, etc.)
THey just go from field to field making what money they can. They for the most part live in tiny rundown trailers packing 10+ people in 2 bedrooms.
Our taxes then give them stability by providing them welfare.
Then, what do they do with the money they earn picking? They don\'t put it back into the system. They send it to their families in MExico or wherever.
And before you get on your high horse. I KNOW THIS ISN\'T EVERY SINGLE SPANISH SPEAKING PERSON IN THE US!!!!
But, out of the pockets of people where they don\'t care to learn english, this is what is happening here.
-
-
Thanks. That will help out Mr. Bling Bling

Paul2, that\'s not spanish, that\'s a bad translator dude.

I am using Alta Vista Babel Fish translating from the internet to translate Videoholic words in Spanish. I thought it would be funny. In my opinion, I kinda agree that when Mexicans migrate to U. S., it\'s not important if they learn English or not. What\'s important is their later generations like their kids that born in the U. S. should learn English and speak English. Since their kids go to school, they should learn English, and if they\'re bilingual. that\'s better. Prepare them for a better future. But if Latino America only learn Spanish when they are raised in the U. S. That\'s wrong.

It\'s a mexican slang word. Being that all I know is Catalonian Spanish (from Spain), I just assume it to be some typical insulting curse word.

LOL :laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing:
The real explanation for the verb CHINGAR is "to f*ck" in latin-america spanish, I mean, we know what "chingar" means but here, in Spain, we don\'t use that word... it\'s only used in Mexico, Colombia, Peru, etc...
-
Ai de mi! Dios mios!
Look, i respect spanish people and there language. But the bottom line is, if you come to america seeking whatever it is you seek, learn the damn language. It is very disrespectful to me when someone from a spanish speaking nation comes here and completely disregards the main language. I cannot tell you home many times I have had to use my spanish 4 skills from high school when helping out a guest at the grocery store i work at.
I run over the border, jump the fences, or swim the waters, do us a favor and learn the language, stop making more babies so you can get off WIC, get a decent job and an education along with it.
I know i just kind of sounded like a racist, but it is just the kind of observations I have made thus far in my life. I have seen these things. People of foreign decent having way to many kids, being poor, and not speaking the language, it is not good for the country.

But do those peope live in your country for many many years or are they tourists??
BIG DIFFERENCE!!!
We aren\'t talking about people who move here or visit here and who have only been here less than a year. We are talking about generations of people who don\'t care to learn the language of th ecountry that provides for them.

I know what you mean but, honestly, I cannot believe that a person that is living for many years in a country, working, speaking to friends, watching tv, ... cannot speak, if not fluently, so-so the native language of that country... that\'s hardly believable.

Come to FLorida. Hang out in either Miami or Tampa.

That\'s another matter dude... I\'m sure that Florida has more spanish speakers than english. It\'s not the same to live in NY than in Miami, in terms of language. If you live in a city where you can see latin-tv, speak to lot of spanish-speakers, etc etc... they will reject to learn english in the way a worker of NY will have.
-
No, there are far more English speakers than Spanish. Latin-TV is a nationwide network. THere are 3 or 4 Spanish stations, but that has nothing to do with Florida. They are all over the country.
-
Vid isn\'t there a saying: "Will the last American out of Miami please bring the flag with you?"

We have the same thing going here in AZ we are soooo close to mexico that being bilingual is a heavy advantage. Im with vid I have meet people who have lived here for 20 years and cant speak a lick of english. Just to add a side grip I also cant stand the fact that these yahoos live in this country with a "Green Card" for 20 years and pay no taxes and in addition to that the get the tax credits so they are actually making mor out of it then they even paid in.

I\'m not racist, but I think if you (1) Live here, speak the language (2) pay f**kin\' taxes.

Are there any Mexicans left in Mexico?
EDIT: I hate anyone that does not pay taxes, but eat up tax dollars.

Don\'t tell us about illegal workers. We\'re the "Europe\'s door" to every african inmigrant. In some parts of Spain there are more illegal workers than legal ones. It\'s a shame actually.

NO these people are legal and and able to work in the USA with thier green cards. Yet have to pay no taxes.....

Ah... legal workers... then why don\'t they pay taxes? In every state they\'re out of taxes? Stupid government, isn\'t it?

Yes very stupid..... Its legal for them to work with a green card yet since they are not a citizen they dont have to pay taxes...

The state I live in is crying that they are not receiving enough money. I think there is talk of raising our taxes yet again. I suppose it is only fair that we should pay more taxes. Especially since it is common knowledge that a majority of the mexicans that work in my area. Work for a bit. Send most of their money back to Mexico, and then with 5+ years go back to mexico where they evidently have enough money so that they do not work again.
