Dec. 16, 2003 — A new weapons system was unveiled Monday in Israel that enables armed forces to fire guns around corners and could revolutionize urban warfare around the world.
The patented "Corner Shot" provides protection to the soldier by enabling shooting down a street, through a window or a door frame with maximum accuracy while keeping out of the line of fire.
The system consists of a rod and a mobile end section that can be adjusted with any type of combat handgun and includes a camera allowing the soldier to scan the targeted area and aim while maintaining cover.
Russian soldiers during the bloody World War II siege of Stalingrad first had the idea of bending the barrels of their rifles to shoot around corners and their Nazi opponents developed a purpose-built attachment fitted with a periscope which they called the krummerlauf.
The Israeli-U.S.-developed Corner Shot is the latest improvement on a series of devices invented over the past two decades by the FBI and the French army which left at least the combatant\'s hand exposed.
"This system was put on the market three months ago and we have already sold it to 15 countries," said Amos Golan, a retired lieutenant colonel who served in Israeli anti-terror units and invented the Corner Shot.
The device costs between three and five thousand dollars and has been sold to the U.S., Russian and several European armies, said Golan, also joint CEO of Corner Shot holdings.
"I believe that the Corner Shot weapon system can be extremely beneficial in the global war on terror," Golan said.
"It protects soldiers\' lives and increases their chances of survival, while drastically improving their ability to gather information and transmit the combat scenario as well as pinpoint and engage targets out of their line of sight."
During a media presentation which included a drill of an assault by an elite unit on a building where "terrorists" were holed up, Golan said the device was already being used on the ground but refused to say where.
The Israeli army, which carries out daily house-to-house searches in its crackdown on Palestinian militants in the occupied territories, is said to be considering the use of the Corner Shot device.
Its shooting range is said to accurate to 100 meters (yards) with a 9mm handgun and effective to 200 meters with a 5.7 mm rifle.
The company is based in Florida, but the system is currently manufactured in Israel and can be fitted with a variety of cameras, lasers and flashlights suited to close combat.

-
I saw something about this a while back.
-
does the melee mode let the hinge go back and forth automatically when you hold the trigger? ;)
-
not a bad idea, but what happens when everyone ends up with one (or some sort of variation)?
Everyone will be shooting round corners, no one will ever get hit.
edit//
it will put an emphasis on strategical positioning though
edit2//
can it shoot round right hand corners as well?

kewl. Then a dood runs out in front of you... d\'oh

Some guys were developing some bullets that had some gyro doohickey in them and were lazer guided, gave snipers some limited control over the bullets.
Of course the obvious problem was....the bullets were expensive as heck.

 that reminds me of a bugs bunny cartoon when
he shot at yosemetie sam & the bullet waited for him come
out,then tagged him.

Useless.
Why not just do the old Die Hard method.
*BLAM BLAM*
Besides, who would want to use that sissy looking gun.
-
Reminds me of an old Nerf Gun i bought once.
-
Pretty cool.. Germany had similar weapons during WW2.. both MP-40 models with a bent barrel and a machinegun that they used on their Ferdinand tanks.
-
Im guessing they failed pretty much?
I mean, if the barrel is bent, its going to lose ALOT of power, and accuracy.
-
They should just use the gun with a small TV monitor mounted on the scope. They just hold the gun around the corner and just look at the monitor and aim with it.
-
I saw something like this on the discovery channel before.
-
I wonder how long it will be before the cops is the USA are carrying this weapon?
-
Geez, i wonder what genius came up with that idea. I mean honestly, i had that idea since i was a kid playing toy guns with my friends. Maybe i should have pitched the idea to frickin nasa and i could be the worlds next great inventor.
