Have I got a throbbing headache! Ugh.....do you realize how too much of a good thing is when you watch something as brilliant as The Return of the King???? DO YOU? It\'s like too much cocaine. An overdose, one would say.
Anyway, sitting on my ass all day was not a good thing.
BTW....this is the greatest movie of all time! Peter Jackson just bitch slapped Kurosawa and is now his sammich maker. ROTK made Seven Samurais looked like Glitter. :p
-
Ohhhh... mm\'s gonna ban you for good now. :p
-
It was so so...
Oh and I guess your thread Sammy wasn\'t good enough for GMan.. He had to create his own thread.
"Hey, look at me!! I went and saw it twice!!"
"Hey, I\'m the greatest!!!"
"Screw you guys and your thread you already have!! Look at me! My butt hurts!!"

Actually, this was gonna be a spoiler thread. But I was too tired last night to type it all up.
[sp]The extended DVD is gonna be one long ass movie. The breakin og Saruman\'s staff by Gandalf, the retaking of The Shire by the returning Hobbits and wasn\'t Legolas supposed to be on the ship heading West? The movie didn\'t deviate too much. [/sp]

I\'ve seen more than one - so can I compare?!?!
(currently owns four of them - planning on buying a couple other\'s including \' Ikru\' - the up and comin Criterion)
No doubt Akira was a brilliant and visionary director , but why must we bring him up EVERYTIME?

AHAHAHA! I\'ve seen more than one! In highschool.....with Japanese classmates.....in the mid 80s.
Tolkien ownz.
Oh, can anyone refresh my memory about the final chapter in ROTK?
[sp]Didn\'t Aragorn ride on the ship that headed West?[/sp]
-
tolkien ownz?
tolkien was jack shit to do with the movie EXCEPT providing a guideline for peter jackson to spend 4239857 billion dollars in production value.
lets see lotr without CG, what you have then?
i could have swore fanboy\'ism was dead
dont forget where peter jackson came from

Yeah, let\'s employ some real live dragons, mm. Since I do know enough about yer boy Akira (which BTW...you need to stop kissing his dead ass), I can make a comparison. LOTR Rules all. Peter Jackson did a marvelous job. Tolkien was brilliant.
If anyone is a fanboy....it would be you, Mr. Kurosawa is Rolling in his Grave coz People Have a Different Taste Than mm.
And BTW, Bad Taste wasn\'t meant to be distributed to theaters. He did it mainly for his friends. Then he got the money to make the movie and it has had a cult following since.

You must be on drugs. The animated movie "The Hobbit" was more of a summary than an actual true translation of the book. The second animation was more of the same, only they used live action and just painted in the characters. The third, again, like the other two, skipped more than half of the stories.
I think this is one subject you need to stay out of since you probably haven\'t read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. If you did, then i can\'t see how you could compare the abridged cartoon version to the Peter Jackson movies can say the cartoon version was better.

low budget > pompeus budget
always
and if someone hasnt read tolkien by my age, shame on them
and speaking of classic fantasy animation go rent

Not ALWAYS true.
Gone With the Wind was a big budget movie and that was quite brilliant. LOTR Trilogy as well.
I think the magic that low budgets have is that if it flops, no one cries. If it\'s a success like Blaire Witch Project, everyone say HOLY COW! It\'s all about expectations. People expect big things from big budget movies and typically, they don\'t deliver. I can see your point there. But there are exceptions.
-
very, very few exceptions

crikey talk about a LOTR fanboy. gman you\'re just on a nerd high from seeing ROTK, it\'ll pass in a couple of weeks.
ROTK was an excellent movie but Seven Samurai > LOTR *. One review made a funny of how Peter Jackson didn\'t know which ending to use for the movie so he threw in all 12.
-
Sigh... Just enjoy your movies and stop this friggin lame ass, "i know more then you" bullshit. Gezz, people talk about getting told what to like, when they\'re doing it to other people themselves. Talk about friggin contradictions..
Again, just enjoy your films. If 1 person likes something more then others, who gives a f@#k..
carry on.

Movie blew. Purely a rental.

Exactly.
I love the contradiction and theory that if you have a low budget, the movie is going to be better than if you have a higher budget.
-
I like when people compare completely different things...
I couldn\'t even enjoy the damn movie because the lady behind me had the most annoying laugh I\'d ever heard...and they didn\'t turn the lights off until halfway through the movie...and some dumb ass lady was yelling out Star Wars trivia to her friends sitting 2 rows behind her...and people were dressed like characters from the movie...ugh...I could go on. Oh yeah...everyone in line was playing some sort of LOTR pokemon game.
And I\'ve never even seen "Seven Samurais"...:/

Is this a problem for you?
I see no problem with that.
It\'s like me saying I could not enjoy a concert, because someone had the bands T-SHIRT on.

Because they left the lights on when i saw it too... MAYBE YOU WERE THERE!!!

1)Tolkien wrote a masterpiece.
2)Seeing lotr without good effects its like reading the LOTR trilogy and imagining plastic dragons, plastic looking monsters coming from power rangers or an old Godzilla movie ,stupid looking things like fire that doesnt look like fire etc.The movie had to show the beauty of the world tolkien has created. Those effects were NEEDED to SHOW the beauty of the world CREATED by Tolkien who has IMAGINATION.Do you have?I mean if everyone thought the way you do fantasy movies shouldnt exist becuase they need effects
3)The actors and their roles were perfect
4)It was emotionally intense. The Matrix trillogy had tons of superbly made effects. But it lacked this.Or do effects manage this and I didnt know?
YOU BELIEVE THAT THE MOVIE WAS LIKED JUST BECAUSE OF ITS EFFECTS?
The movie was great as a whole. Not just because of its effects.

Wow. I watched it today, and it was one of the best audiences I have ever been in. Only 2 cell phones rang, and they promptly shut them off. Not a peep out of the people. Only one kid cried for about 2 minutes. Then the parent took the kid out. Overall a great experience.
So far as seven samaraui goes. Sure it is a classic. That does not mean that LOTR can not be one. I am somewhat concerned how well this movie will look in 20 years. CG has had a habit of aging poorly.

That\'s not what I meant...at the last LOTR I went to...everyone had kick ass costumes. These people were just lame. One guy just had a stick and kept yelling out lines from the book...I was in line for 2 1/2 hours...and I didn\'t need the weirdness that was going on in the line.

How does the original Star Wars still look? Yes, it\'s dated, but in the end, you get lost in the story and actors and I think that is how the LOTR trilogy will be.

EWOKS. Need I say more. besides there was no cg there. The old style of puppets and costumes tend to age better. Think more on the line of Lawnmower man.

And Mark Hamilton with 70\'s hair is always a hit. :D
-
I never go to these epic movies the first week.
I always wait until the whackos with hobbit feet clear out.
-
But you saw it on the first week, vid.
-
There was a good crowd at the show I went to also. Few people dressed up, not one cell phone rang, and nobody was talking. People clapped...it was nice.
Peter Jackson did an excellent job, no question about it.

Whacko\'s? Granted, I don\'t do cos-play, but I see nothing "whacko" about them dressing up as characters they love in the book / movie.

I saw one guy and his girl dressed up as Elves. They looked the part, tall and slender and both had blond hair. But he was no Legoloas. The teenage girls would have ripped him to peices. :p

Was splendid. Can\'t wait for the EE , speaking of which.
- I hope the EE has the \'House of Healing\' scene. I know it was filmed.
- The \'Mouth of Sauron\' was rumored to be filmed and then cut for the EE - that would be nice.
- More of the "army of dead". We see them battle from a distance, but not up close. I can\'t help but feel that there was something cut there.
- Speaking of which, I would of liked to seen when Aargon and his crew overtooked the Orc ships on their way to Gondor.
- More Witch King. Gandalf mentions how he\'ll take care of the King and the Witch King mentions how he\'ll "break Gandalf". The trailers showed them fighting - so it\'s obvious that was cut and the whole Witch King was downplayed in the current edition of the film.
- Would of been nice if they went in more depth on why Frodo and Bilbo sailed to the west and the actual meaning of "some hurts never heal".
- Actual death scene if the Orc-Captain (who was played by a fellow Goonie!). They hyped him up also, even showed him dodging his death a few times, but we never actually see him die.
- Re-instated footage of the fall of Saurmon. Come on, Christopher Lee had a lot to do with this project and his character was SORELY missed in this installment. I have no doubts it will be in the EE, but I see no reason for it to be cut. It left a huge hole in the movie, in my opinion.

LORD OF THE RINGS WOULD BEAT SEVEN SAMURAI ALL DAY!!!!11!!1! OMG AN ELF A KING TWO FRODOS AND A MIDGET WITH AND AXE11111 LOL111 SEVEN SAMURAI WOULD GET PWNRGED BY THAT11!!1!1
BTW, why is low budget automatically better than big budget? That doesn\'t really make sense even when using pop culture elitist logic.
-
I\'m not really defining anything.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with my having the opinion that wearing a costume to a theater is for whackos.
-
Just got back... Man that movie, and trilogy rocked. Probably the only DVD box set I\'ll ever buy. What a great way to start my Christmas break... That movie really was entertaining and is just humbling to think back upon...
Oh... and what is it with the audience and applauding? Does anyone think that is the gayest thing in the world? I swear the theater I was in was about to do a standing ovation when the movie ended and I was like, "YOUR CLAPPING TO LIGHTS PROJECTED ON A BIG WHITE SCREEN!"
Just kinda bothered me...

I don\'t understand it and I don\'t do it, however I can almost see why some people do it. It\'s just a gesture of apperciation . Just like people boo at bad trailers (see: Mask 2 trailer).
Either way, great trilogy. Only trilogy I can think of with no bad installments.

I don\'t think you understand, when Samwise was married everybody in the entire theater I went to started clapping, also when Aragorn was crowned. When stuff like that happens I feel as if I\'m surrounded by ignorant people. Also when everybody started laughing when Gimli said, "that still counts for one", or whatever.
-
Clapping people are lower on the totem pole in my life than people who dress like elves and hobbits to go see a movie..
Elves and hobbits who clap... woah... I don\'t even want to go there.
-

Haha... So true... I guess the people don\'t vary too much between Las Vegas and Pickerington, Ohio. You can clap for plays, or concerts, or comedians, but your showing your appreciation to people who aren\'t even actually there. All you are doing is telling the rest of the theater that you\'re a tool.
And I also hated it when they laughed at every cheesy one liner. They take the bait so easily. That Gimly thing was a perfect example, the most it got was a small smile from me, how can you laugh hysterically at that?
Only gripe about going to the movies... Oh and 3.25 for a bottle of water...
-
I\'m just back from the cinema and I must say that I\'m really impressed. I was expecting something similar to Two Towers, but ROTK is greater... is epic, wonderful. Wow, i\'m shocked, indeed. Those battles, thos creatures, thousands of horses... very very nice.
Congrats Peter, you\'re the new best director for the new year :p

I agree with everything you just said. I was like WTH when I didn\'t see the Mouth of Sauron!
No Sharky in the Shire? What a pity.
Long movie, great movie, but could have added a few things LIC pointed out to make it better.

The Vmax Cinema rocks. It\'s friggen HUGE.
For you yanks
28 Meters = 30.62080 Yards, 91.86800 Feet or 1102.36000 Inches. Which ever you prefer. :)

sigh...
ps.. we may be remote from the world, but don\'t u think americans have the technology to use a plane.. Shame on you.
-
I know of two things at the top of my head that the EE will have :
The final confrontation between Gandalf and Saruman (and Saruman\'s death).
The courtship of Faromir for Eowyn.
-
We have that crap at two different theaters here in Tampa. One is all leather seating and adults only. THey serve drinks which is nice.
-
The theatres around me are almost ALL stadium seatings that recline. But it\'s still run by crappy management and employees that don\'t care about quality work.
-
Yeah, all of the theaters here are fancy stadium seating as well. I\'m just saying that a couple of them are high end with leather chairs like Soully was talking.
About 7 years ago we had a huge boom where we added a couple hundred screens in the area. Pretty ridiculous really. But it\'s nice having the big movies on 3-4 screens at each theater complex.
-
I can think of 5 theaters within 20 minutes of me. The nearest which is right down the street has 16 theaters. The others have 30, 24, 17, and 15. One of those has an Imax screen which is the same as what souly was explaning. The 30 screen one is amazing, inside a new town center/mall. Over 6000 seats to offer. When I saw Matrix Revolutions I folded up the armrest of rear seats and layed down while watching, now thats the life.

Well the theater labeled Imax shows recent movies here also, though I know where you are coming from with some. It\'s still showing Matrix Revolutions last time I checked but probably did switch to LOTR.

It doesn\'t show regular movies. Matrix Revolutions was actually made for Imax. They have it playing here in Tampa as well.

Well who knows cause they always have movies showing there but I never check that theater out, personally it could be a tiny ass theater as long as I\'m comfy I\'m good. That one is across town compared to the others for me.
-
I just wanted every one to know that I saw LOTR: ROTK, and it was awesome. This thing will achieve a hallowed place in my cinema list, if they can restore a couple of critical scenes in the extended edition.
BTW I thought I saw Akira Kurosawa swinging a samurai sword in the army of the dead. :)
-
i saw it boxing day (in vmax woo) Great movie, better then the first 2. Only thing that got on my nerves was all the bs talking sam does. I\'ve heard they\'re gonna make the hobbit. Which would be great for a build up to lotr. :)
-
I wanted to see more about farmir, he had a really cool story but they cut most of it out from the last two movies.... is a shame...
-
Going to watch it today, at 13:00 to be precise. :)
I\'d hate to see it on opening night, all those dressed up freaks, cheering at every little scene in the movie.. Ugh. :shy:
-
Saw it a few days ago... and honestly, I didn\'t think it was all that great. I actually had a few yawns and a few moments with my eyes closed (it was an 11pm showing). The Two Towers was better imo.. The battles were nice and all, but I also watched The Last Samurai a day before...those sword fights were wayyyy better. I\'d rather see a few guys fight up close than like a million orcs/horsemen fight from a distance. that\'s my 2 cents.. :)

1. Stand up halfway through the movie and yell loudly, "Wait... where the hell is Harry Potter?"
2. Block the entrance to the theater while screaming: "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!" - After the movie, say "Lucas could have done it better."
3. At some point during the movie, stand up and shout: "I must go! Middle Earth needs me!" and run and try to jump into the screen. After bouncing off, return quietly to your seat.
4. Play a drinking game where you have to take a sip every time someone says: "The Ring."
5. Point and laugh whenever someone dies.
6. Ask the nearest ring-nut if he thinks Gandalf went to Hogwarts
7. Finish off every one of Elrond\'s lines with "Mr. Anderson."
8. When Aragorn is crowned king, stand up and at the top of your lungs sing, "And I did it.... MY way...!"
9. At the end, complain that Gollum was offensive to Ethiopians
10. Talk like Gollum all through the movie. At the end, bite off someone\'s finger and fall down the stairs.
11. When Shelob appears, pinch the guy in front of you on the back of the neck.
12. Dress up as old ladies and reenact "The Battle of Helms Deep" Monty Python style.
13. When Denethor lights the fire, shout "Barbecue!"
14. Ask people around you who they think is the next "Terminator" sent from the Middle Earth of the future to assassinate Frodo Baggins
15. In TTT when the Ents decide to march to war, stand up and shout "RUN FOREST, RUN!"
16. Every time someone kills an Orc, yell: "That\'s what I\'m Tolkien about!" See how long it takes before you get kicked out of the theatre.
17. During a wide shot of a battle, inquire, "Where\'s Waldo?"
18. Talk loudly about how you heard that there is a single frame of a nude Elf hidden somewhere in the movie.
19. Start an Orc sing-a-long.
20. Come to the premiere dressed as Frankenfurter and wander around looking terribly confused.
:D

OK, I finally went and saw LOTR last night. Saw it in a nice 21 and older theater. IT was awesome. I haven\'t been to a movie where I didn\'t get pissed off from the audience in a long long time. It cost a little more to go to this theater, but you can drink, they have awesome leather seats.. It\'s just plain better.
OK, now for my questions about the movie.
[sp]WHere in the hell do the eagles come from? Were they mentioned before? It\'s like TOlkin wrote himself into a hole and then said to himself, "What if a big bird swooped in and saved the day"[/sp]
Question #2
[sp] Wasn\'t it a bit too easy for Samwise to resuce Frodo? I knocked 3 orcs off the stairs and then one up in the room and he was done. Was something cut out?[/sp]
and Question #3
[sp]The boat at the end. Was this suppose to be a final journey for those have worn the ring? I didn\'t really get it.[/sp]
-
I\'ve seen it weeks ago. Imo better than # 2, a bit less than # 1.
My crit. :
- up until 3/4 of the movie Frodo remains a too flat character.
- the ending was too long winded and too sweet \'n rosy imo.
Still, a nice movie :thepimp:
-
The last ten minutes dragged in my opinion too, but I guess there were just a lot of loose ends to wrap up.
-
eh, I thought it was alright, better than the 2nd one.
I swear in the second one they literally walked for 45 minutes, yes walked and they carried a boring conversation the whole time.
-
First, the "big birds" are from LOTR:FOTR - they saved Gandalf after his fight with the Barlog and took him to get healed. In the book they are used more often also.
The boat journey was to the undying lands. For those who had carried the weight of the ring and was nolonger the same. Just as when Frodo said "some hurts never heal" - he was talking about the Witch King stab that still, once a year pains him.
As for the ending, you are looking at it all wrong. Remember, that the books was written as one huge book and the publisher decided to split them up. So, the movie\'s was made as three movie\'s, but one huge story. Do you want a two mintue ending for these characters that you\'ve invested so much time into? No. The ending was just right in my opinion.
-
I also remember the Eagles reading The Hobbit. When they were stuck in the trees and those wolves were beneath them the Eagles came and rescued them. Apparently they\'re cool with Gandalf.
-
I figured the eagles had something to do with the first movie. I had just watched TT, so I didn\'t think it was in there.
That\'s exactly what I thought the boat was for at the end. That\'s what I told my honey anyway. Can\'t believe I was right.
Did anyone actually watch all of the credits?
-
I watched them only to see the outtakes afterward.
-
Omg the movie doesn\'t have "The Mouth Of Sauron"? He was my favorite part of the book. :( Seriously, "whoif hast teh wits to speak to me", something like that, his two pages of the book were the greatest. How they left him out is beyond me. But then again, I\'m expecting 3 hours of fighting and a half hour of bs. Go Jackson.
-
"Is there anyone in this rout with authority to treat with me? Or indeed with wit to understand me? Not thou atleast! It needs more to make a king than a piece of elvish glass, or a rabble such as this. Why any brigand of the hills show a good following!"
Classic.
Actually, I like the movies, makes the books that much better where you can visualize all the characters and events. Otherwise kind of fluffy but great overall.
-
The \'Mouth of Sauron\' was filmed and is voiced by actor Bruce Spencer. It will be in the ROTK:EE.

Tell them you are moving out if they don\'t buy a DVD player.
-
We\'re not poor either, I got a 150$ watch at Christmas. I would like to see the voice of Sauron though. Other than that we have no reason to get a DVD player to watch silly little extras(I have seen DVDs before fyi!). Each member lin my family thinks exactly like I do...and it scares me everyday beyond belief.
-
Yea, my family doesn\'t own a DVD player either.
-
I\'ve never used a computer in my life. Ever.

I know you are using sarcasm. You have to be...And if you\'re not, well, use your PS2.
:)
-
I had a PS2 and it died, and that put us in the no DVD player department again. But yes, I lied, I forgot my mom bought some 40 dollar DVD player like a week ago, sadly I couldn\'t talk her out of buying it cause she said it was just to use in her office. Once I get the remote for the xbox I\'ll have a DVD player again. I also was looking into buying a nice DVD player but school cost put that back a couple months.
My family is in the stone ages with technology. We just have some old 25" tv as our main tv with a 19" in my bros room.
-
Go go ghetto technology mobile.
-
You can pick up a dvd player for less than the price of a game now. Go buy one yourself.

Dude, you live in a trailer? You can buy one now for less than the freaking DVD.
-
I don\'t have a TV in my room anymore, so I\'m not buying a DVD player for myself.
-
Do you have electricity?
-
I live it in a cave since I don\'t own a DVD player apparently.
-
Don\'t you have a DVD in your computer? LIttle amish boy.

My bad.. They are playing ROTK at the IMAX theater here as well. I think that\'s just too big..
