Title: Halo 2
Post by: Eiksirf on January 07, 2004, 06:43:17 AM
So who\'s waiting for this one?

My friend bought an Xbox just for Halo (go figure) last week. The co-op mode truly is spectacular. They\'re very generous with extra lives in that mode (and therefor, extra ammo), so I actually played farther than level 3 with him.  We\'ve got two levels left to go.

In single player I would run out of ammo and gave up. I\'d probably be better at it now...

Anyway, with Halo 2 on the horizon, (It is on the horizon, right?) I wondered if anyone else was looking forward to more co-op fun.

What do they have planned for the sequel, any idea?

April \'04 is the current release date I believe.

I don\'t know much else about it besides what I\'ve seen from the trailers.  Perhaps pstwo could help out...

well first of all, I think Halo 2 on the ps2 would blow monkey balls.  The PS2 is a great console with great games but it has hardware limitations.  As for games to warrant an xbox purchase;
Fable
Ninja Gaiden
KOTOR
Halo
Halo 2
Shenmue 2
Panzer Dragon Orta
Rainbow 6 3
Morrrowind
etc...

there are good games out there.

I\'m awaiting Halo 2, but not on the level that many others are.

What Eik saids is true: Halo is a good game with great co-op. Without that novelty (along with the solid multiplayer) the game isn\'t nearly as good. The gameplay is mostly intact, as are many other technical aspects.. but the level design destroys a lot of the fun factor. Single-player FPS\'s thrive on level design, Halo doesn\'t deliver.

It has a few good levels (notably The Silent Cartographer among a few others) but even those are plagued by repetitive indoor environments. Co-op sort of eases this pain, but the fact remains.. Halo was flawed.

Hopefully the excellent production values and solid gameplay can meet intriguing level design in Halo 2.

Sorry to get anyway near flame bait but can the X box handle HALF LIFE 2..and DOOM 3 ?

From what i have read, it will take a current PC with a direct X 9 card to run it nicely.

Last time I checked there was no official statement or release date from Bungie.  March/April was just an imaginary date someone said and everyone else jumped on.

Oh I\'m waiting for it too.

I don\'t mean to be a nitpicker here, but as someone who owns a PC capable of running the vast majority of big titles on Xbox and the vast majority of upcoming big titles as well such as the aforementioned Half Life 2 and Doom 3, I can honestly say it\'s been a waste of money.  Sure, I love Halo and can\'t wait for Halo 2, but all the other "killer apps" it supposedly has are all on PC and I own them all on PC already.  If it wasn\'t for Halo 2, Fable, and Ninja Gaiden, I\'d be seriously fed up with the console.

I am not much into pc games, but I feel like the system just did not deliver on those big games. If I knew what I know now I would have never spent 300 bucks on it.

And the controller is awful. I mean xbox has the worst controller that has ever been created on a video game system. I would rather have that old atari pad with the stick and 1 button.

If microsoft was smart they would have partnered up with sega and backed the dreamcast/

Yeah but you didn\'t answer the question.

How is the X box with (under a gig processor and "ge Force 1" card) going to run these games when they say if you have anything under 2 gig & a direct X 9 card then expect a slide show.

I don\'t care if Half Life 2 looks worse than its PC counterpart, sacrificing graphics for smoothness is what a console\'s about. It\'ll still look 10 times better than a PS2 would trying to run the same thing.

I\'m not an xBox fanboy, I own numerous consoles, xBox is there for meatier titles with large environments like Morrowind and GTA whilst the PS2 is there for driving games (xBox pads don\'t allow manual shift, they\'re crap for driving) and loads of jump on-jump off arcadey games.

Halo 2 on the other hand will be a doddle for the xBox, the first one was rushed out for the console release, hence the boring mid-section with loads of same rooms one after the other, the next one should address that with larger set piece battles and more. It\'s gonna be utterly mental on-line too. :D

Oooh, nearly forgot something......

The creators of Doom III have made a statement saying the Xbox version will look like its\' pc counterpart.  That was quite a while ago though so I\'m not sure if they wisened up or what...

No doubt the game will look mind blowing but those Doom III pics are drool worthy.

and for anyone not willing to spend hundreds of dollars getting a capable pc the xbox seems to be the best alternative.

I\'m jacking in my job and moving home for a bit in June, it better be out beforehand or so help me.................

And we might be surprised at the xBox, if a PS2 can be made to do something like GT4 imagine what an xBox could do if pushed hard enough.

What I was getting at with my answer was - the simple fact they are doing it. Reguardless if they say you need 2 gigs & DX9 those specs are for the PC, not the console. The two perform in different ways; always have, always will (unless you nab yourself one of the new DISCover systems but that is a horse of another color altogether! ;)

Post by: Eiksirf on January 08, 2004, 07:58:55 PM
I\'m sorry but N64\'s controller flat out owned the Xbox one. The stick was loose after awhile and the C-Buttons sucked, but at least you could hold the bloody thing. (And I don\'t mean the S-Controller.  That\'s the only way to go, in my opinion.  It\'s still too big and some of the buttons are placed terribly, but it gets the job done.)

BTW, last I heard Fable was due THIS Spring. At least, that\'s the tentative date.  I expect to have it by Christmas \'04.

Morrowind is amazing, imaging being able to pick up any item you see, kill or be friends with anyone you want and countless tombs etc to raid.

You can enchant your own items or create spells, owning a property is also a big thing.

If you look after the game save size to make sure it doesn\'t crash you\'ll have a great gaming experience.

I\'d say more but the fun is in discovering the huge world of Vvardenfell.

Welli know which version gets my vote :D

The PC (having to spend a fortune to up-grade my rig) option ...lookslikt TV dinners for me form now on.

p.s. i\'ll think i\'ll pass on A Half-Life 2 thats just like the PC version but with out all the MODS(Counter strike 2...Team Fortress classic 2...Day of Defeat 2)...most of the effects (you can forget all the nice Direct X 9 effects)....oh and take a hit in both Res and FPS.

It was Quddus, and thank you.  I think the S controller is about the best controller out this gen after using it for a while.  Hell, both the biggen and S are good controllers.

And I don\'t like hearing speak of PC gaming taking away key xbox titles because frankly pc gaming isn\'t practical.  Far too much money is dipped into it.

morrowind is cool, but you have to stick with it as it is 100+hours long.

To add on to what was said, another cool part is joining guilds like the fighters guild or mages guild and working your way up to the top.

You\'re welcome.

The S controller is not near as bad as people like to think. The only design problem that still remains is the black & white buttons are too small and are hard to tell apart. When playing something like \'NFL BLITZ PRO\' those two buttons become a real problem .

The N64 controller was clumbersome and the \'C\' buttons was the worst design idea since Atari thought the Jaguar controller should have 20 + buttons. Yes, those buttons was idea for first party games , but any third party game almost always suffered, mainly fighting games.

simple, the xbox doesn\'t have to deal with desktop shit wasting all its power, it doesn\'t worry about wasting memory on anything but the games.. You u play any pc game, most of your 512meg ram (example) is already gone to your OS.   What they NEED to do is make a OS thats designed to run as a desktop system, or boot staight into a gaming system without all the extra crap. Just driver support for your controls, sound and graphics etc.

Frankie: How did you guys get started making these full body suits of armor?

Sid: Nightmare Armor started with [just] myself, and I\'ve been an artist for over 20 years now. Back then I was constantly struggling to find new ways to express my artistic abilities. My passion is character design so I decided to step outside the box and challenge myself to higher limits. When I finished my first full suit (the Deepeyes Armor from Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within) I found a sense of gratification that I had not felt with any of my past art attempts. When this first suit was debuted it attracted a lot of attention. I found myself surrounded by many like-minded individuals who wanted to work with me on future projects. I then weeded through this group of people and hand picked the members that make up the team today. I think this is where this turned from a hobby into a passion. I\'m very grateful to work with such a talented group of guys that all share the same idea: that, first and foremost, what we do is for the sake of art. So you ask me how we got started? By not compromising the quality of creativity.

HALO 2 to have over 20,000 lines of dialouge!

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/columns/tech_reporter_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=2079130

Quote
"According to Featherstone, "Halo 2" just happens to be one huge game, with 20,000 lines of dialogue in it. "And that\'s just one illustration of its size," she said. "Bungie is a perfectionist and wants it as polished as it can be. If a game is innovative, if it pushes the technical limitations of the platform, then it puts risk into your schedule. But because we know we can ship at any time and will do really well sales-wise, we\'ll take our time and get it to be the game we want it to be. It\'s the most important title on the Xbox platform and it needs to be right."

"\'Halo 2\' impacts the other games in the Xbox portfolio," she explained. "Nobody wants to ship just before it or in its shadow; they want to give each game some breathing room."

Of course, most of them will most likely be the one-liners you hear from Marines and Covenant alike... But still, impressive. And that number will only continue to grow(Marty crammed tons of extra sounds before HALO\'s release).

Not that it is a huge surprise, but Halo II has been officially delayed at least until fall of \'04...

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Halo 2," the sequel to the best-selling Xbox game ever and one of the most-anticipated titles of 2004, will ship this fall, Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Friday, dashing hopes that the game would be out sooner.

Oh well.

Speculation from fans, and bullshit dates from retail stores like EB Games to shut up the people who ask for HALO 2\'s release date a million times a day. Bungie made it clear since HALO 2\'s announcement not to believe any release dates unless you hear it from them directy, that they would announce a release date when they were truly confident they could deliver it in time.

On the topic of the Xbox controller: Controller S is fantastic. The only true flaw would be the placement of the white/black buttons as LiC indicated.. and that\'s a minor problem. Better than N64\'s? Heck yeah.

N64\'s controller has one advantage over any controller this generation, and that\'s the Z trigger. It could have probably been implemented on the GCN (or Xbox) controller as a middle-finger button. (leaving the GCN\'s Z button alone as a sort of \'Select\' button) Otherwise, the N64\'s controller stinks. Bad analog stick (the first of its kind for consoles, innovative but flawed) and bad button placement. (referring to the C buttons)

I do wish that they\'d kept the the D-Pad from the N64 controller and used it on the GCN pad, but eh..

One last thing about the N64 pad: it worked very very well with Nintendo\'s own games (just like the GCN pad) but had limited appeal with 3rd-parties due to the unorthodox layout.

im talking about the ones without vibration, and instead of how the sticks look now, they had a dent in them at the top

In place of the sticks there were two \'Rolo\' shaped lumps, not very good IMO.

DS2 ruled all, I bought one just for the GT demo!.

June 1997 apparently. I thought it was earlier but I must have been mistaken.

N64 analog controller was out before Sony\'s version (n64 release in Sept 96).  Don\'t wanna sound like a fanboy but Nintendo did the shoulder buttons, vibration, and analog thumbstick before anyone else.

It wasn\'t until the GC controller that they didn\'t try something new.  The only thing Sony did new were analog buttons, which kickass btw.  Sega first did LCD displays in the controller (via VMU), and MS has yet to do something new.

The vibration was only enabled with a specific add on on the controller if I remember well?

Bah.Nintendo tends to innovate but they rarely  exploit it the right way and at the end they dont get the appropriate admiration and recognition. The controller sucked.Over sensitive analog stick, and not comfortable
Sony tends to get the ideas and exploit them the right way and even farther and always its them that get the recognition(becuase of the double analog stick we also got innovative games like Ape Ascape).
Nintendo just threw the new features there
