"More than one-half of all U.S. homes now have a DVD player. "If the average home buys 15 movies a year — and the more avid consumer buys 20 — and on average you watch them twice, that is 80 hours a year, a couple hours a week gone to watching DVD movies," says Tom Adams of Adams Media Research. "Throw in an extra feature, and it\'s well over 100 hours a year."
15 movies seems extremely low, or I buy way too many. Do you guys go above or below this average. I would say on my very slow weeks I tend to pick up atleast one, and some weeks 4 or 5.
-
15 movies sounds incredible high. Yes, you buy a retarded amount of movies.
-
I don\'t buy dvds anymore, but I do aquire about 3-4 dvds a week.
*Kicks LIC in the nuts
-
I Netflix everything now. I only buy what I think are classics, such as LOTR and About Schimdt. No reason to build up a DVD collection with blu-ray on the horizon.
-
I get one every 2-3 weeks probably. Let\'s face it, there isn\'t that many good newer movies out there.
-
THX I have my doubts about blu-ray. Only time will tell though. I thought about netflix, but I go through stages where I want a specific genre now, and not 2 weeks from now. My own personal video store. I will continue when Dvd\'s replacement comes down the road. I doubt I would rebuy most for HD, but I definitly would for quite a few of them.
Most people I work with that are an average age of 50 buy around that many dvd\'s a year. I figured it would be a bit more here.
Theomen the MPAA will track you down, and cut your left testicle off for acquiring movies without paying for them.

I DON\'T HAVE A DVD PLAYER SO SUCK IT.
Suck it hard, and suck it long.
Edit-am I 4000 posts yet?
-
I\'ve bought one DVD for myself ever. The Ric Flair DVD set. My family combined owns like 6 DVDs. We\'ve had a DVD player for a couple years. We rent, if anything.

Capcom just fyi you can rearrange your Netflix queue anyway you want, so if you want 3 Stooges next you\'ll get it in 3 days. But yea I know what you mean, the wait can be a pain, especially on a snowy weekend.
About blu-ray I see it as a seamless transition, where the players will be compatible with DVD. You can buy the player + HD movies if you want, or stick with DVD. Either way, low resolution mpeg-2 is a less than desireable way to spend my hard earned dollars, I hope it comes soon.

I started off renting years ago. i ran into the problem of scratched disks. I would be playing it, and then when I was interested. It froze from the hundreds of small scratches on it.
-
I don\'t own a dvd player and I don\'t have any dvd\'s. I can\'t watch movies more than one time. Renting is the only way to go for me.
-
I almost never get movies anymore. Last movies i/family got were the pirates of the carribean and a volume of Danger Mouse. Those were for christmas and the last movies we have purchased since reloaded and before that.... man i cant even remember.
-
I used to buy about 60 DVDs a year. Now I\'m down to around 5-10, although most of those will be box sets. I also burn about 3-4 DVDs a week. ALL HOME VIDEOs of course :D
Didja know that downloading mp3s is now fully taxed and legal in Canada (http://www.cdfreaks.com/news/8698) WHETHER OR NOT YOU OWN THE ORIGINAL? Too bad they didn\'t go that way with sharing too. :(

I could not agree more about the low resolution. It\'s hard to believe blu-ray or any other format is going to catch on for a few years. HD is coming, but most consumers in the U.S. seem to be behind the times. I know of quite a few people that purchased their first dvd player this year. I doubt they will not want to move on too quickly. The difference between dvd and vhs was somthing you could see quite easily.
EDIT: I did hear of a service that rents import dvd\'s. I may give that one a try. I have been on a asian kick for a bit now. IMHO the only newer movies that are somewhat creative. The U.S. is doing way too many remakes for my taste.
The general public may have more problems with HD because to get the best picture, you want that puppy calibrated. Not to mention not wanting to abandon somthing that is new to them.

I\'ve been slowing down a bit this last year or so. But I tend to buy in bundles... I\'ve just got Seven Days in Tibet and Legend of Bagger Lance (both were really cheap ;)). And then I figured I should also get Pulp Fiction (2-disc version) and Jackie Brown while I was at it. Before that my last DVD purchase was TTT: EE version.

15 ? Way low.
I bought, just like 11, if you count online orders that have not got here. And come Tuesday, I\'ll buy probably another eight.
-
I guess it all depends. It changes every month. Some months are really slow for me while others are jam packed with greatness. I am missing a few gems in my collection, no doubt, but those I am missing I\'m in no rush to get. One of the letters in my name in my signature links to my DVD collection if anyone happens to be interested.
-
I rarely buy any movies for myself. Don\'t have claim to the TV long enough for a movie. Thank goodness that Ryu lent me his laptop to watch his DS9 collection.
-
I very rarely buy any at all. Usually if they are on sale I wll buy them cheap but I tend to find the newer ones too expensive.
-
I buy a few here and there. It\'s cheaper than going to the movies so I usually don\'t go to the theater and just buy them later.
-
I know Capcom and I end up buying at least three a week, on the average. There are weeks where we buy more and weeks where we buy less.
Take for example, last week...
I picked up..
Dune (Lynch)
Zatiochi (1)
Zatiochi (vol: 8)
Zatiochi meets Yojimbo
RAN
Once Upon a time in China
Rabid
Shivers
Opeth: Lamentations
And coming this week, I\'ll get..
Freddy vs Jason
Spider-Man (MTV series)
Zaiotchi (vols 2-4)
Son of FrankenStien / Daughter of
House of Frankenstien / Frankenstien meets Wolf-Man.
My point? 15 a year seems extremely low. Then again, it also says on the average you watch them twice and there are very few movie\'s in my collection that I\'ve watched twice or more.
-
That\'s another thing -- a lot of people rent and pick up movies they have seen before that they know they like. Most people won\'t take the plunge into unknown territory of purchasing a film because it\'s, on average, a $15 dollar investment on something that just may be absolute bile. That\'s probably why the sales seem very low.
-
It really depends on what you want.
I can guarantee that people who have the money, a nice entertainment center, and a good movie watching enviroment will buy 15+.
People with the modern television, and nothing special will probably go with about 15, give or take.
I own about 20, recently been buying more classics for 10 bucks. Renting is usually my preference, if its good Ill purchase. If its just a one time deal, I wont.

I get a lot of DVDs around Christmas and any good movies in between that I want to get. Lets see. Technically, there are 5 DVD players in my house (only one gets used). The one on the computer; the one in my living room (used lightly); the one in my brother\'s room (that is surround sound and he\'s taking that when he gets an apartment); my PS2 in the den (which was used a lot but not anymore); then the surround sound DVD player in the den which replaced my PS2\'s DVD player (been going like nonstop since we got it at Christmas). And no we\'re not rich. We get all this stuff cheap at like Costco :) Then we get DVDs real cheap from Columbia House.
-
I have 5 too, so I\'m cool as TIT. One in the living room, one on the Xbox, one in my laptop and two in the desktop one for ripping and one for burning. Damn RW only rips at 2.4 even with hacked firmware. However my laptop is going on ebay and I\'m eyeing a new desktop like maybe a 2400+ and OC\' it up over 3000, or maybe just be a lazy dick and buy a prefab (that way I can pay over a year w/o interest and not feel such a hit in the wallet)
