i just owned Emprex dvd burner and this is what i can say about it, it craps.  It doesn\'t read CD-A that well.  It skips and when i burn my DVD-R, it doesn\'t play on my panasonic dvd player.  I think my panasonic dvd player doesn\'t support DVD+R, but it have trouble reading the DVD-R that i burn from it.
I still believe its the burner crappy laser.  What can i say, you usually get for what you buy for, and this cheap $90 is really crappy.  I am thinking of returning it and getting a different burner.

and btw, i owned a Philips CD writer and I love it.  It have a very good error correction and good reading laser, so.  Bottom line is, don\'t buy something that\'s cheap and no name brand, because they usually have crappy laser and go for big name brand if you can.

I have a Plextor 708a, and it\'s fantastic.

One suggestion I have though, is.. wait for dual-layer burners. They\'re coming very soon.

dual layers burners, actually you don\'t have to wait for dual layers.  Because you can just easily upgrade your software either through the internet or by disc to record dual layers.  You don\'t need to change dvd burner or the laser to record dual layer.
What you really  need is a blank disc that is dual layer and it might be a bit more expensive than single layer.  Say a 4x blank dvd disc may cost $1.00 while a 2.4x dvd dual layer blank disc may cost $1.30 or a bit more, but its definately worth it.  Just give it sometimes for dual layer blank disc to increase in speed.

I have a sony multiburner and haven\'t had any problems with it. The home movies I burned onto my DVD+R/RW disks play in my cheap home DVD player also.

Firmware updates i believe you\'re thinking of.

Firmware.. yes.. but.. I haven\'t heard anything about upgrading current hardware for dual-layer burning.

I know that DVD burners today can read dual-layer discs, but I doubt they can burn them with new firmware.

just say no to Pioneer, most everyone on the afterdawn forums have said they\'re very picky about what media they\'ll use and what decks they\'re burned media will play on.  I have an I/O magic dual format burner that has yet to give me a coaster.

BTW, if you are going to be making "backups" I\'d suggest DLing DVDshrink and "buying" NERO 6, with those two the process of putting a DVD-9 on a DVD-5 is damn simple, and you\'ll usually not have to compress the movie as long as you cut out the extras.

Wow, I haven\'t been here for about a year and the first time I do I find a post I feel compelled to respond to.

Liteon has been releasing a ton of firmware updates lately and has added a "bitsetting" feature to the newest 411s and 811s firmwares.  This allows you to burn dvd\'s that settop dvd playes recognize as dvd-rom instead of dvd+r.  This is a good thing to have.

Also, there are two +/- 4x burners from liteon available: the 411s and the 451s.    You might buy one and receive the other, but as of a couple days ago they can both be upgraded to burn 8x like the 811s and 851s.  That sort of thing voids your warranty, but if you go that route, I can provide the info + files you need.

I\'m currently using a 401s upgraded to an 811s and it\'s working great.  I scan all the dvd\'s I burn for quality with kprobe and my first 8x burn was the best burn my drive has done so far.

As liteon been releasing firmware, media compatability has been improving and there is no reason to expect that to stop.  I would recommend any of the following liteon drives: 401s, 411s, 451s, 811s, and 851s.  Hope I was some help.

The only thing that voids warrenty is using 3rd party software. If you use the firmware and program provided by the manufature, you don\'t void your warrenty. Not many people know this, but its true. Aslong as you don\'t use other software besides the manufatures own software, you keep your warrenty. I\'ve had a fight with a wholesaler over this, told them to call the manufature and ask them what they think, and i was right. :)

as towards DVD burners, i am leaning towards liteon, they\'ve a great rep. I have their 48x24x48x burner and have had no problems. Copied nearlly everything 1:1 without need cracks or patches, only copy pro i\'ve had trouble with was starforce.. Even with alcohol and RMPS emulation i\'ve had troubles. Thats when i\'ve had to use patches..  anyway they seem to be a great company, up there with plextor. :)

^question:
how well does your liteon CD writer read regular disc that is not copy, and how well does it read disc that is slightly scratch?  Does it every skip or makeing popping noises or the such?

I know what you mean about warranty voiding, but the liteon upgrade is a liitle different.

To go from a 411s to a 811s you need to hack the eeprom (seperate from the firmware) and use a hacked firmware file.  The hacked firmware won\'t be necessary once someone figures out how a certain checksum is calculated, but it is for the moment.

Liteon has updated their site recently to state that they won\'t service any drive that has been flashed with the firmware from another drive.  You can almost always use a third party utility to flash liteon drives though, even if it doesn\'t show up in the bios, so you would have to be pretty unlucky to end up with a dead drive that you couldn\'t flash back to the original eeprom + firmware.  Still, it might be a problem for some people.

The liteon dvd burners are also excellent 40x cd burners.  A lot of dvd burners are much slower than that.  Have fun shopping.

A hacked firmware isn\'t updating.. Always best to use the manufatures flash utils, unless it fails, then normally people use other flash utils to redo it. (ones that don\'t need to read the eeprom to flash it) 3rd party software of any type will void warrenty. If it doesn\'t show up in the bios, then it doesn\'t really matter. So most people just bs even if they\'ve used a different util.
I understand what your saying though, but personally i don\'t bother with hacked firmwares / bios. I perfer the manufatures one.
