Do any of you really think that any of the following activities are actual sports? I am of the camp that believes they are NOT.
Golf
Nascar
Any Racing Activity
Most(not all) Extreme Sports
Bowling
Poker(Listed because they show it on ESPN all the time)
Pool
I can\'t see how someone can argue that these are sports and the people who participate are athletes.
-
Ping pong isn\'t either
-
I think they are different sports. A sport isn\'t really beating the crap out of your opponent. The actual definition of a sport is
1. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
2. A particular form of this activity.
# An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
# An active pastime; recreation.
Got that from dictionary.com. According to the definition, they are sports. By a mans definition of a sport (which is physical contact) they are not sports.
-
Have I worked with you?
Because, last week, I was working with a dude and we had the same argument.
Yes, they are sports.Just like skydiving is one.
-
NASCAR and other auto racing are Motorsports. So let\'s leave those out of this debate. :)
-
The best definition of sports I\'ve ever heard went like this.
A sport is a competitive athletic activity in which defense is actively played
The only sport on that list you could even argue that defense is played in is NASCAR...but that\'s a stretch. They are athletic activities, not sports.

Go tell Tiger Woods he\'s not an athlete. Golf is a sport, requires as much hand eye as about any other sport out there. Actually more difficult than any sport. Oh yea, Tiger benches over 300 pounds.
-
I doubt many NASCAR racers can bench 300 pounds, but I would never go up to any of them and tell them what they did wasn\'t a sport. It\'s in my opinion that if there\'s a rule somewhere that states a certain violation of the rules as "unsportman like conduct," then it\'s probably a sport. ;)
-
Stupid all american theories or w/e you wish to call it. Extreme sports are easily sports if you ask me. Thats like saying the olympics arent sports. Now i wouldnt consider sitting on your ass at a computer playing a tournament a sport really but something like bowling or even MOTORSPORTS are at least sports to some small degree. Either way they are sports of some form. If not then what are they? Competitive activities? W/e This is a kinda silly debate because i can already tell that everyone is just going to be stuboorn about it.
-
There are some arguments for billiards as a sport. I prefer to think of it as.. at the very most.. a semi-sport.
I\'d say that good placement of the cue ball after a shot or instead of a shot could be considered defensive.
It doesn\'t make billiards a sport, but it\'s a form of defense.
-
Some rumored sports I would call hobbies.

Yes, we did work together and no it is not.
BTW, They told me to tell you not to come in tomorrow. You are fired.

My idea of a sport, anything with physical activities and rules. Now does skydiving have rules? Although it can be in competition, so therefore imo its a sport.

He is an athlete, I never said otherwise.

I was refering to anyone that thinks golf isn\'t a sport, not just you. I play golf on my free time over the summer and it\'s just funny when people say it isn\'t a sport.

Any of you walk an 18 hole course while swinging a way at a little white ball trying to knock it in a hole not too much larger anywhere from 150-600 yards away, and then tell me thats not physically demanding. Most(not all) Extreme Sports also is physically demanding and has rules too, so it pretty much qualifies too, everything else can go blow its self if they want to consider it a sport.
-
I\'d love to see you bunch of pussies walk 18 holes 4 days in a row in the heat of competition. And that doesn\'t count the practice and pro am days.
Damn straight golf is a sport.
-
I\'ve been thinking.. billiards is a sport.
It uses a ball and benefits from increased physical strength. It also requires much skill, and is competitive. It also contains forms of offense and defense.
-
Golf, the only sport that has a slave in it (the caddy)
-
be a caddy for tiger woods, then tell me you wouldn\'t WANT to be that slave..
-
I\'ll accept that the term "sport" is arguable but considering golfers athletes is not going to happen. Just because one or two of the players is in really good shape does not mean that all of the players are. If I\'m a competitive Gameboy player who can bench 300lbs that doesn\'t mean pro Gameboy players are athletes.

So we are pussies if we don\'t see the significance of walking, standing, and swinging a stick at an inanimate object? Would you go to a baseball game if they replaced the pitcher with a Tee, got rid of the defense, and made the batters walk the bases?
-
I\'m not saying that golf and extreme sports and the like aren\'t physically demanding. I just think they are athletic competitions, and not sports. I differentiate between the two. The competitors are still athletes, and I take nothing away from them, but the games themselves aren\'t sports. They are part of the broader term \'athletics\'.
-
To me a sport is anything in which you compete against another team, and is widely recognized as a sport. I know it\'s a vague definition.
Oh, and Cheerleading is so not a sport.
-
^ but your in a team, and they compete against other teams...
-
I think anything that involves physical activity to the point where you\'re sweating can be called a sport. Videogames don\'t count because the activity has to be REAL.
This may change in the future though.. imagine VR gaming where you\'d have to run around and shoot. This would get those lazy computer gamers a chance to get in shape (myself included).
-
Golf is a sport just like football (both kinds). It involves competing against others for money/prices/fame. There are pro golfers. Et cetera, et cetera.

Thats a bad analogy. Benching 300 pounds doesn\'t further your ability to play Gameboy while when driving a ball I definently would like that extra strength.
Also, I normally compete with my cousin when I golf and it gets heated. Just as much as any football game I\'ve played in. To get an edge I lift and practice. Wow, this all sounds like sport activity to me.

Are you insinuating there is no defense in golf? WTF do you think Wind, Trees, Water, Rough, etc. are??? Do you think god just happen to put a stream about 260 yards across the fairway on the par 5? No.. It makes you think about how you want to play the hole.
And as far as adding up the amount a baseball walks/runs and the amount a golfer in the average day walks, I will almost guarantee you the golfer puts on more miles.
And if you are comparing the excitement level of the two sports, well there is a draw.

However not at the same time!
Haha.... I dunno I don\'t exactly have rules with a firm definition, I just judge whether or not if it is a sport in my book. If it\'s a cheerleading competition, perhaps, however if its just shaking your boobs at an audience during halfttime, thats hardly a sport.

Golf - As Winston Churchill put it, "one way to ruin a perfecly good walk"
Nascar - It\'s boring but there is an art to slipstreaming and it fairly tactical.
Bowling - No, it\'s a game to play when you can\'t get a pool table.
Poker - No, sitting at a table gambling everything including your shirt on getting a Queen is just stupid.
Pool - Yes, it differs from Bowling in that there are a lot more possibilities on how things can go, with bowling you either knock them all down or have a couple left, how crap and boring is that?!
-
No they are not sports. You can be a fatass pig and do all those things. They are only sports for people who were nothing but losers in school and could not excel at real sports.
Enters chess:rolleyes:

Well spoken by superhero QuDDus.

What about darts?
Most "professional" darts players are fat bastards who spend all day drinking at the pub.

I agree to some level. Professional bowling seems so sad where its basically to see who cant bowl a perfect game. I see too many of those asses making strikes each time.
Biased i guess, id still like to consider it a sport since i love to bowl and use different techniques, but in my realm nobody is a 300 bowler and the Ball&Lane conditions always change. So I guess its not... to some.

I definately wouldn\'t go that far. You can be a fat ass pig and do most sports(Basketball = Shawn Kemp; Baseball = David Wells; Football = Take your pick). It really has nothing to do with not excelling at "real" sports. I\'m sure the average participant in all those activities would whoop your ass for saying that too. Which leads to boxing.
BTW, I found out today that I have to take a golf class as part of my business major program. Which is kind of funny.

^^^Kind of funny considering the fact that I was(and still am to an extent) a varsity jock.
4 Years Varsity Football
3 Years as Varsity Football Starter - OLB, FB
2 Years Varsity Baseball Starter - 1B
Indoor Track & Field - 4x1, Shot Put
Recruited by some colleges to play Football (Mostly 2, Some 1AA)
But enough about me. Regale the rest of us with your illustrious intramurals career.
-
How fast you run the 100?
-
My best time ever was a 10.7
Never even came close to that again though. I usually averaged an 11.2-3
-
Thats damn fast, I\'ve always been a runner but did tennis instead of track. Never ran the 100 though. Logged about a 52 second 400 and ran the 40 in a 4.4.
Wait, I want to turn this into a golf sport thread. So what do some of you normally shoot on a par 72?

Haven\'t I been nothing but nice too since I have been here?

You haven\'t been critical you have just said things I don\'t agree with, it happens.

I wrestled my freshman year and was horrible... I went against two European champions and was pinned in 25 and 55 seconds. Ah the horrible memories...
I played football my freshman year and started quarterback in two games where we won and I snuck in a game winning touchdown.
Sophomore and junior year I only played intramural basketball knowing our team would never choose a redheaded white guy on the team.
My junior year I was on Varsity Swimming and qualified for regionals, and our relay team qualified for the state championships. Definitely my best sport overall.
So now, I\'m training for my second season in swimming and I should have a really good season, and I\'m the co-captain of the guys squad to say the least.
50 mm Freestyle: 25.9 secs
100 mm Freestlyle: 59 secs

I love how when one troll leaves, another steps up to take the spot. It\'s the natrual process.

Havent read all the posts; but NASCAR does is not a sport. Its just racing around a track.
Nothing is more lame.

Pool: no
Poker: no
Bowling: yes (just)
Nascar:Yes
Golf: yes
Extreme Sports: Now for someone to say this they have never been on a skateboard or dirt bike, cause I could bet that if you had not done either of these sports you could not jump on a skateboard and flip a stair set or jump on a dirt bike and do a 90 foot triple.Skateboarding and Supercross are two of the most technical sports ever.Skydiving on the other hand is not.
