how do you get the dvd remote to work, the led lights up but nothing happens

If you mean the sony remote....

Make sure you plugged the receiver into port 2 of the PS2.  Make sure you installed the DVD patch/upgrade that it came with.  Other than that, the batteries are obviously in it, so if it doesn\'t work, try an exchange.

If it\'s not the sony remote, then which one is it?

Make sure you bought the correct sony remote also as there are 2 different ones. The older ps2 needs the remote with the sensor that plugs into the joypad port. The newer ps2\'s will use the newer remotes without the sensor attachment.
