I\'m just now becoming a sole pc gamer, I\'ve sold my consoles and am simply going the PC route. Now that I have a pc worthy of gaming on, I want to know what games will show off the graphical impresivness of the computer, and since Doom3 and HL2 aren\'t here yet, what are some good\'uns?
-
ahhh, welcome to the light
-
what can I say, when I saw screens of HL2 and Doom 3 I had a little orgasm and new that my life would change.
*looks for a witness from the congragation
BTW, anyone play Unreal II? It looks pretty decent, how\'s the gameplay?

Well, it all depends on the genre really. FPS games usually have the best technology in terms of overall visual effects, but there\'s so many others out there you\'d be ignoring if you left it to that. I\'ll give the best looking ones in a couple of genres.
RTS -- Command and Conquer Generals (Zero Hour)
FPS -- This is a tough call as there are many not only graphically impressive, but also awesome fun. I\'d say go with Rainbow Six 3 Raven Shield (the expansion, Athena Sword, is coming VERY soon), Battlefield Vietnam (not necessarily a graphics hog, but has the potential to be great -- coming in march), Call of Duty (Also amazing playing, but hardly the best polygon pusher)
Action -- Planetside (it\'s pay to play like an mmorpg, but the community is great if you team up with people and the games are friggin massive with land, air, sea, and ground units), Max Payne 2 the Fall of Max Payne (just pure wholesome action and it\'s cool)
If you just want to push your system, without having fun, you can always play Unreal II.
-
^^
So it\'s like the previous unreals....well they were fun for about a day, tops.
you know what\'s odd, the previews of COD I\'ve seen on tv have looked amazing, but I\'ve read in reviews that it\'s not all that great visually. Must be creative advertising....that\'s a first.
-
CoD is all about atmosphere and it has it in spades. Trust me, there\'s no war game more immersive. As for Unreal II, it\'s fun for like 1 hour.
-
Looks like COD is going to be on my shopping list. You said the magic word, atmosphere.
-
theomen, I\'ve CoD and I must agree in the atmospheric element. All we know that it\'s a game based on MoH, but the graphic engine is improved and the realistic situations, scenes, and sound make this game worth buying.
If you like strategy and rpg, you should try Spellforce. It isn\'t neither a graphic monster but it\'s quite enjoyable. And, btw, Unreal II is not that boring.
-
playing Knight of the old republic atm, great game, great graphic
-
Best looking game currently available, legally? Far Cry demo, anyone?
-
FarCry looks really good but I don\'t know, it looks really cartoony at the same time if you know what I mean. But the water effects and the overall detail is pretty amazing.
-
just ordered COD for $25 shipped, pretty good deal IMO.

You don\'t know what you\'ve bought. Get ready to fight in the war, not to play the war.
-
Going through and playing CoD on veteran gave me an all new respect for the game.
-
I checked out some screens of Spell Force, and read about it. Looks very cool, it just got released here in the states so I might oick that one up too.
-
theomen have u tried "Mafia" i know the game is been out for some time but imo its one of the best games ever made i enjoyed playing it alot graphics are nice, and story is even better.
-
damn, thanks for reminding me about Mafia. When it first came out I had a shit computer and couldn\'t play it. I could probably pick it up damn cheap on ebay or half.
*runs off to buy mafia

PC gaming is where it\'s at. The only reason I even have my PS2 is for sports games and the occasional game that won\'t be on PC.
Right now what I\'m playing...
Warcraft 3 - The Frozen Throne
Syberia
Battlefield 1942
Rainbow Six 3 - Raven Shield
-
Yep, agreed there.
RTS- C&C:Zero Hours - just look fantastic.
Runner up: Age of Mythology
Racing: NFS:UG - makes the XBOX version looks like PS2...makes the PS2 looks like PSX!!
RPG: Knights of the Old Republic - the PC version simply trounced the XBOX version...i finished it on the PC. Tried the XBOX version on my friend\'s XBOX a few weeks ago...urrggghhh...jaggies everywhere....blur textures....no thanks.
Others: GTA:VC - not exactly the prettiest game around, but if you\'ve been suffering with the PS2 version, the PC version looks like a next-gen game.
Really, i don\'t see the console can even hope to match the PC as long as the crummy TV is used....next gen console MUST have a direct VGA output or it\'ll simply won\'t match the PC no matter how many polygons it can push, or how many Ghz it\'s CPU is.
================
PC Rocks, console sucks.
-
I was at Fry\'s yesterday, and considered buying a game. The PS2 version was $49.95. The PC version of the same game was $19.95. Unbelievable. Unfortunately my video card can\'t handle the truth, so I have to delay this purchase.
PC games seem to get discounted much faster than console games.
-
I\'ve bought about 6 pc games over the past week (COD, WC3, Freelancer, NBAlive2004, Splinter cell, Max Payne 2 and Freedom Force) and have spent under 100 bucks, gotta love how cheap games are online.

I just upgraded to a Sapphire Raedon 9800 Pro 128m card, and Freedom Force is SOOOO MUCH BETTER. OMG I might actually continue playing it now. :p
I now have the same question theomen did. What games should I start playing? :D
I already have Knights of the Old Republic, and it runs pretty sweet.
I\'m considering these:
Call of Duty
C&C Generals
Combat Flight Simulator (whatever the newest one is)
Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (I really liked the old Jedi Knight, so I think it could be cool)
The Matrix Reconstituted or whatever it\'s called. :) Was this any good?
Should I avoid any of these? Any other suggestions?
-
Avoid the matrix. Seriously.

UT2004 is the best thing right now IMO. Or at least that im playing on my pc. Vehichles just add so much more to an otherwise old formula. Not to mention a crap load of new levels etc.

Are you talking about a demo? UT04 is not quite out yet, right?
-
I linked to the demo up above and the full game comes out in a few weeks time.
-
OK, I downloaded and played Unreal Tournament 04 last night. It was remarkably bug free for a demo! Looked great, and it was a lot of fun. Obviously the "Onslaught" map was the most interesting one in the demo due to the addition of vehicles. That game reminded me of Tribes in many ways, except of course the map was much much smaller. I\'m still put off by the slight air of cornyness to the Unreal products. The character models, weapons, and vehicles all look like something out of a dumb SciFi comic book. That\'s why I\'ve always prefered Half Life to Quake and Unreal. In HL, they\'ve really tried to make everything look real. You have character models with ordinary civilain clothes and beer guts. I always thought that was sort of cool.
In any case, I will probably consider buying UT04 later, if I\'m not too busy with Doom3 or HL2. :)
-
Far Cry is the next big game to come out. It plays well and shows off your graphics card.
Gothic II has impressive graphics and is a solid RPG.
Morrowind is another great game - you can even download new textures to make it look even better.
NFSU is another nice looking game and it is sort of fun if totally unrealistic.
-
If you ever liked StarWars try KOTOR. I\'m playing it now and it is incredible. Also think about Tron. I had fun with that one also and by now the price should be right. I know i\'ll get razed but Serious Sam is good old fashioned fun and real cheap

I didn\'t mention it, but I do have KotOR. It is very good, and I like it so far. That saying something because I usually hate RPGs.
Tron is a great idea. I had considered that some time ago. I\'ll look for a cheap copy.
I have Serious Sam, and it BLOWS BIG TIME. Third rate textures and artwork, and especially Terrible level design. I despise those kind of cheapo FPS games that depend on making monsters spawn out of thin air when you pass an invisible trigger. It\'s so lame compared to the intelligent, well planned design that went into games like Quake and Half Life. Those games were about more than "Lets see how many monsters we can throw at this guy."

But ( Monsters are Fun )
for mindless entertainment
;)
-
Nethack looks and plays good ;)
-
i\'m playing through Splinter Cell right now(i know a little late). But this game looks fantastic @ 1124x768 with everything maxed.

Yeah...actually i find Serious Sam 2( i dunno about 1, never play it before) pretty good and lotsa fun...and the only FPS game i boher to play since...the invention of FPS? LOL.
But then again i\'m an FPS hater ( and Halo sucks shit).

I find that odd. I think the SS series is complete garbage. All my friends said it was great and then when i got around to playing it, i was sorely dissapointed. I will never touch another SS game again.

Me too, I just completed the game last week (the PC version)
Took me 3 days to finish it, pretty long game. (Keep in mind whenever I did not complete a section in a satisfactory manner, I would always redo do the section before I moved on)
Good game, I just download Splinter Cell-PT. I am not going to play it for a while, consdiering I just finished the first game. Appreantly I hear they made graphical improvments as well as gameplay mechanics.
-
graphical improvements.. umm no, they did make the engine run better.. But the LOD hasn\'t improved. Gameplay wise the game has improved. A few new moves, thats about it. Still a good game though.
-
I know you guys all download games and I am guilty of doing it before, but please try and refrain from talking about it. I really do think of all the games out there, PC developers need our help above all others since they are the ones who, essentially, push the envelope like no others.
I finished FarCry a couple weeks ago and still maintain that the game is the best FPS since Half-Life. UT2K4 is REALLY worth playing for its multiplayer. If you\'re into something that is super fun and addictive (and free online), this is the best for you. Lastly, §ôµÏG®ïñD was absolutely correct about SCPT and its gameplay. Just playing that puppy online shows you all the gameplay enhancements. Truly a joy and an original experience online. Give it a whirl if you can.

I have UT 2004. While it is great, I think it needs a patch. The demo ran flawlessly on my PC, but now the full game freezes a little from time to time while I\'m playing. My system specs are way beyond the requirements, and this shouldn\'t be happening. I am playing with tweaking my system, but I have a feeling that an upcoming patch will zot the problem.
