Xbox 2 specs revealed--but are they fact?
Report also says Microsoft aims to bring in Xbox 2 at a too-low-to-resist price point, and months ahead of PS3.
According to coverage in The San Jose Mercury News, the specifications for Microsoft\'s successor to the Xbox were revealed to veteran tech reporter and Merc writer Dean Takahashi. The coverage also suggests that Microsoft plans to capture a much larger share of the console market than it currently enjoys by keeping the cost of the console down, and by launching ahead of Sony\'s PlayStation 3.
The specs for the next Xbox, at least according to the Merc\'s report, are as follows:
Three IBM-designed 64-bit microprocessors, the same chips now used Apple Computer\'s high-end G5 PowerMac. According to the Merc, this will give the new Xbox "more computing power than most personal computers."
A graphics chip designed by ATI Technologies that will clock in with speeds faster than the upcoming R400. The Merc says, "This chip will help the next Xbox to display games with the resolution of high-definition TV."
Compatibility with the original Xbox, which is based on Intel and Nvidia chips, isn\'t guaranteed. Microsoft is concerned it would cost too much money in hardware or in licensing fees to enable the Xbox Next to play old Xbox games, says the Merc. This is risky in part because Sony\'s strategy has been to maintain compatibility with its old consoles.
According to the Merc, there is no mention of a hard disk drive for the new machine, and the Merc has even gone so far as to suggest that the next Xbox will instead rely on flash memory to store saved games and permanent data. The report also suggests that the possible inclusion of a hard disk drive and the amount of dynamic RAM available in the machine will depend on what Sony announces for its PS3. Microsoft had not commented on the report at the time of writing, and is unlikely to shed any more light on its plans until next month\'s Game Developers Conference in San Jose (where much talk in the industry suggests a major Microsoft announcement will be made), or E3 Expo in Los Angeles in May.

they seem a bit high considering the rumors are that the Xbox 2 will be here in about a year and a half. I mean a computer with these specs would cost around 3 grand, I know prices will go down in a year and a half, but not that much.

I agree. I\'m skeptical about these specs. I have a feeling that they will a) lose a lot of money or b) will have the XB2 priced high

Cheaters. "We\'ll wait till sony posts their specs, then we\'ll beat them for sure." MS is :ghey:

The specs dont sound that interesting to me.Ofcourse I dont know much about this microproccessors mentioned in the article/

No HDD, WTF???
I can\'t imaging Microsoft being that stupid.

wouldnt this mean that Xbox would have to dish its DirectX function and all is programming friendly attributes?

It would be funny to see XBOX 2 without a HDD....it\'s like going backwards...and no backward compatibility??
I think it would be stupid for MS to release a machine before SONY. At least for this gen, they can boast the most powerful console. If they release it before PS3, for sure SONY will do everything to beat it\'s specs...so SONY will have the best console library AND the most powerful console for the next gen AND (most likely) backward compatibility AND ( quite likely) a HDD of sort given the direction of SONY with it\'s PSX and aim to be the home entertainment hub.
So in other words, MS is giving away it\'s advantages to SONY for the next gen....but of course, SONY might not be able to beat the XBOX 2 specs since it\'s using the same micro size (65nm) and both are coming from IBM as well....
Perhaps SONY will not announce a HDD in their machine specs and let MS release a HDD-less machine and gives them a shock when they do include it...

?!?
Sony cell chip ain\'t comming from IBM, it is co-develop\'ed with.. And it wont be in the x-box.
There are so many component in a console, i dont see how the size of a micro chip could declare a winner

Them releasing months before ps3 is there best bet. Seeing how big sony is and seeing what happen last year with ps2 they would be fools too sit around let sony have another monster release.
After everyone has already bought a ps3 who is going to go and spend another 300 bucks on xbox2. And every next gen console will have respectalb specs. And if they wanna get everything into production and ready for a good launch you can\'t just sit around and wait on the competition to release specs.
And the technology is not going to be much more advance so all the specs talk is just bs. And the only good thing about xbox is the hdd they leave that out of xbox2 then they might as well hand the title right over to sony.
