Title: What does everyone think of Canada?
Post by: Jumpman on February 08, 2004, 09:17:15 AM
Your general thoughts on Canada, the country above the United-States, are wanted in this thread. :)

I\'m just going to start off by saying it\'s geographic location and size has been extremely beneficial for it\'s people and it\'s place in the world.

OT within an OT-Anyone like my new avy? :nerd:

Canada seems like a very nice country, beautiful nature, nice people (except for those you see on Reality TV, Canada 2nd nation after Czech Republic with the most mullets per capita? ;) )

I would not mind visiting sometime.

About US-Canada bashing, I think its similar to what we are doing to the Norwegians, just some brotherly love! :D

Your avatar is nice, too bad Matrix 2 and 3 sucks. ;)

Canada is very erm......  BIG!!!

I wouldn\'t mind visiting in the summer ,lots to see and do I expect. It is much too cold for me in the winter though.

I have visited many different parts of Canada, and I like it.  It\'s comfortable and familiar like the US, but just a little "different," which is a nice change.  I generally like and agree with their beliefs and standards.

Down sides:

Canadians seem to mostly hate Americans.  I think it\'s because we have culturally overwhelmed them to the point where they have to struggle to remember they are different from us.  80% or more of their television, movies, music, and literature comes us, all containing references to the US and assumptions that the audience is here, not there.  I can see how that would become weird to be colonized by your neighbor like that.

Canadian weather is awful most of the time.  Winters are bitterly hostile, and summer in Ontario is unbelievably humid.  As always, I ask myself why humans would voluntarily live so far north on this planet.  There are lots of options available (just don\'t come to Southern California please).

Canadians always take their shoes off when entering a house or apartment.  That does not happen in the American southwest.  I don\'t know why, but I just find it weird.

Canadians put red maple leafs on EVERYTHING in sight.  In Canada, you literally cannot turn you head 90 degrees without seeing 3-4 maple leafs.  Every company logo, public sign, advertisement, or seal of approval seems to have a maple leaf built into it somehow.  Yet they accuse US of being hyperpatriotic with our flag.  Give me a break, you guys have us beat in that department.

Yeah, half of them are over 50!

WOOT WOOT!

Living in Alaska, we go through Canada quite alot and I experience alot of their culture. It pretty much is quite like America, but the people seem more agitated, especially when you try using American money.

Overall, nothing stands out from it as being odd.

As someone living very far north on this planet, when I travell to other countries I ask myself how people can live in weather like that all year around.

I prefer having seasons drastically different, winters should be cold and dark and summers hotter and bright.

But that\'s just me.

I don\'t see ANY maple leafs all of over the place like Cord is describing around where I live. Canada isn\'t half as boastful as the US with the pride they have in their country.

Um...you\'re an idiot. You realize Canada and the US don\'t share the same currency... right?

I can\'t believe you\'re surprised Canadians would get ubset with someone trying to give them non Canadian money, regardless of the location. You\'re just not on the same level of thinking everyone else is.

Don\'t really hear about Canada much over here, only that they love Ice Hockey.

Exactly how I feel about Canada.

I love Canada.  Great weather, no worries of being mugged, women look great.

Only thing is they don\'t seem as culturally diverse or rich as I would have hoped when I visited.  Sometimes it just felt bland and boring.  Nothing jumped out and made me say, wow this is a different place!

The only real gripe I have with them is that they think all Americans are so full of themselves blah blah blah... Seems all the hate is coming from their end, but maybe it\'s just in my mind.

Could you state which location you\'re talking about?  Do you live there, or have you only visited?  It\'s hard for me to evaluate your observation without more info.  I\'ve spent a lot of time in Canada.

I use American money there whenver I\'ve run out of your "wannabe British" currency :p Most places accept the American dollar but the exchange rate they give me is highway robbery. Try to use Canadian money in the US and they throw you out of the store and shoot you with our American guns. :p

Canada = beady eyed with floppy heads. And what\'s that line from "Blame Canada"? Oh yeah...."It\'s not a real country anyway" :D

I\'ve lived in Canada for 17 years thank you. ;)

I\'ve lived in Moncton, New Brunswick for 15 years and Halifax, Nova-Scotia for 2 brief years. For those wondering these provinces are located above Maine or on the Atlantic coast.

The reason I responded to what you said is just I found it quite shocking since I have never seen of this parade of maple leafs like you\'ve described in any place I\'ve ever been. Downtown Moncton, Halifax, never have I saw a place that just screams Canada with the maple leafs. I visited Toronto once but that was about 6 years ago so I have no clear memory of it that I could describe.

Honestly, I\'ve never really looked for the maple leafs like you have. Maybe it\'s just you were in an area once that had an excess amount and just began to take note of the leafs and look around more carefully for them. I know just reading your post I know I will start to take note of them if they\'re around. Being in a number of political classes at school the Canada/America issue that always comes up is how Canadians don\'t share the amount of nationalism the Americans do. Just found your statement odd.

This pops out at me too since all I ever hear is how multiculteral friendly some places in Canada are. I know in Halifax there was a vast amount of diversity. We celebrated it frequently too. Then I come back to Moncton and I can\'t see a brother or hindu around.
 I\'m sure the official french province Quebec would be quite diverse. New Brunswick I know is the only "official" bilingual(sp?) province in Canada. Didn\'t get all those Acadiens deported. :(

Yea seriously.  I went to Toronto and the Falls and out of all of the thousands of Canucks I saw my bro & I only counted TWO black people.  I\'m scared of them as the next person but how boring it would be if there were none around!

Well I am just stating this as I have family that lives in New Jersey, you go anywhere outside the city you don\'t see too many black people, shit my cousin freaked out when he found out he had a cousin that was black. Its just basing it off that and being around the area enough to know that all I saw was caucasian and chinese for the most part.

Not to go RACER on the subject, but Canada is f*ing gorgeous. Toronto is nice but Montreal is by far my favorite place there yet. Its so damn clean and fresh. Not to mention the now legal bud :p. And all the french canadian women loved the fro:D. Of course its a thing of the past.

Everybody is too busy bashing canada and never actually goes there. If i remember correctly 15 y/o\'s can see R films? Gun violence is like in the 100\'s a year. Chicago its like what? 3000? J/K

You do realize that absolutely everything that Canada exports HAS to have a leaf on it right?  At least what gets sent to the US does.
