Electronic Arts and UK-based Criterion Games today confirmed that they have entered into a development and publishing partnership for Burnout 3. PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions of the arcade racing sequel are currently scheduled for worldwide release in September this year, although the GameCube version also rumored to be in development last month has not been confirmed.
"Burnout is already a hit arcade racing franchise and we are delighted to be working closely with Criterion to take the series to the next level in order to achieve the level of success that the series has always deserved," said Bruce McMillan, executive vice president, EA Worldwide Studios. "With its action-oriented game design and remarkable production values, we believe that Burnout is a perfect fit for our racing game portfolio."
Burnout 3 promises to be the most action-packed entry in the series to date, rewarding players not only for driving dangerously but also for using their car as a weapon with which to eliminate opponents via slam, shunt, and takedown maneuvers. Street circuits in the game will be set in North America, Europe, and the Far East, each with plenty of opportunities to gain bonuses by racing towards oncoming traffic.
Single-player gameplay modes in Burnout 3 will include both race and crash championships, as well as other options that are not being announced at this time. Single-player races in the game will be against five opponents rather than three as in previous Burnout titles, and the new "Hollywood-style" stunt crashes promise to be the most spectacular seen to date.
Exclusive to the PS2 version of Burnout 3 will be online gameplay modes for up to six players. Specific online gameplay modes have not been announced at this time, but we\'re told that both single races and crash modes will be available.
"Working closely with EA\'s European Studio on the development of Burnout 3 is exciting for Criterion and the Burnout series. We are thrilled that the game will benefit from EA\'s development and publishing expertise that ensures a worldwide audience will be able to enjoy this phenomenal game," said Fiona Sperry, studio head, Criterion Software. "We are confident that through this partnership, this fantastic game will be made even better."

I thought Burnout 2 was excellent so I am really looking forward to this one. :D
-
didnt like the first one, didnt play the 2nd much, though i heard great things about it, this does look amazing though
-
those are xbox screenshots probably ^^
-
^^
Who cares? The defining line that used to be there between XBOX and PS2 titles graphically has blurred somewhat. PS2 continues to amaze whilest XBOX is just so so considering all the hype.
-
I think they are PS2 screens actually, Criterion has been speaking about how much "more" they are able to push PS2 now compared to Burnout 2.
-
I love the smashed glass.
-
looks good. i never really played burnout until the 2nd one,..which was good.. it was nice to just pick up & play rather than go through the grueling license tests in gran turismo..not saying that gran turismo is crap..it\'s an excellent game and i\'ll probably pick up the next one..i just hate the licensing tests
-
The could very well be ps2 shots. I dont see it as impossible or improbable. Who knows and who cares. As long as it looks at least as good as BO2 then we are fine. I cant wait for this one. If its online then im getting it first thing when it comes out.
Ive been waiting for more online games and this would be the point where i would give in and buy the BBA

Same thing. Played the first and didn\'t like it and never played the second, but with all the hype around the second title I suppose that I should at least rent the 3rd title, might just be a sleeper hit.:)
-
If you don\'t like the first then I doubt you\'ll like the second. Personally I loved it, and two just seemed like more of the same fun. I hope they can bring more concepts into the third, either way it\'ll get some playing time from me.

Have to say now that i have one.
I really don\'t see the massive gulf in power terms between the PS2 & X box.
Feel kind of con\'ed.
:(
Either way i might end up getting this for the x box as the triggers on the s controller suit an arcade racer better in my eyes.
-
Don\'t forget the ps2 version has exclusive online play for up to six people!

Exactly. I bought an XBOX over a year ago now and am still to buy a single game for it. I rarely hire games, and when I do, I rarely get an XBOX one (last game was PGR2 which was so so, I honestly don\'t see the hype). I think it was a total waste of money. I know I have grown out of games somewhat, but it just sits collecting dust.
If I were to get B3 it would be the PS2 version. Dual Shock is so much better (screw triggers, gimme the wheel) and online play.
Microsoft should just count their losses and call it a day.
-
I said conned about the gap between PS2 & x box... i didn\'t say they sould cut their losses.
anyway back on topic...
This will be a Addition to my X box games list... got the first one on a multi game pack with hitman 2 & Medal of Honour and have to say ... me Likey :D.

That\'s actually not true. I found the first Burnout to be boring, repetitive and short but I love BO2 although it\'s a little short also. It\'s the best arcade racer I\'ve ever played. I\'m usually a sim-racing fan myself but BO2 was great fun.
And comparing this to GT (I know it wasn\'t you Bozco) is just plain stupid, don\'t know why people do that.
So for all you who didn\'t really like the first one should definitely check out the second one. The crash mode alone is worth buying it for.
-
It had the same sensation of speed and my cousin and I were able to sit and play the same couple arcade levels over and over again and love it.
-
Burnout has to have the best car crash system on any racer.
thanks guys... you all got me in the mood to fire it up on the X box when i get home.
/me makes vroom vroom noises.
-
i got burnout 2 about a month ago and its still entertainig me =] im on the reverse courses - some are quite hard =]

I hope that\'s running at constant 60fps on PS2.I dont wanna see another "NFS"-frame rate on a good racing game like Burnout.
-
when i did play the sequel i quite enjoyed it, it had ironed out most of the bugs i didnt like

If you played Burnout 2 you will know how fast that runs (60fps with no slowdown). If this is the same which I am sure it will be, I will be a happy man. :D
-
Yep playied the second.
I am just amazed by the detail shown in these pics. And I hope this wouldnt mean that the game will have frame rate drops.
I dont want it to end up like the last Need for Speed which had amazing graphics but bad frame rate
-
i never seem to notice this 30 FPS thing u guys always talk about
Except when i was playing "the getaway" i noticed the screen got slightly jumpy - i coudn\'t quite put my finger on what it was - i was going quite fast is this the FPS thing?
-
Burnout 2 runs super fast and superbly smooth. If you check Need for Speed its not as smooth and sometimes the frame rate drops even more.
If Burnout3 retains the smooth frame rate and has superb realistic graphics like above that would be GREAT
-
Racing games should be at 60fps. Other types of games I don\'t think its such a big deal, but racers must be smooth.
ooseven, what I mean\'t was that for PS2/XBOX multi format games, there isn\'t normally a real advantage graphically to buy the XBOX one instead. Majority of the times PS2 is still sharper and normally more refined, plus more online support.
-
More screens!

Are you sure these arent from development kits?
They look superbly sharp and detailed!!
It even looks better than GT4 to me!!!!!!
I imagine it running smoothly at high speeds at constant 60fps and I wet my pants
-
Yea, those are pretty amazing. Part of the yellow flipped over car looks almost real. The gameplay is already tried to and true also.
-
*BOW DOWN*
Criterion are the PS2 kings  looks f\'ing incredible.

I love driving games , but I hate burnout all the same.
I think , there is only a reason why this game is a hit : the crashes
I hate crashes ,
I prefer to drive safely instead of crashes.
