Lucas finally admitted he needed more 24k gold bathroom fixtures.
The Star Wars Trilogy will be released as a four-disc DVD box set September 21, with a global rollout on DVD expected within days of the domestic release, according to Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.
The trilogy featuring the classic franchise films Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi will be released on three DVD discs, with a fourth disc likely to hold a newly made documentary about the "Star Wars" franchise and never-before-seen footage, among several other bonus materials, Jim Ward, Lucasfilm\'s vp marketing and distribution and the DVD trilogy\'s executive producer, tells The Hollywood Reporter.
"We are currently in the process of restoring and remastering all three titles for the DVD release, so we\'re still working on details of the marketing strategy," Ward said. "But I believe that it is safe to say that it will receive tremendous exposure across all media."
Lucasfilm and Fox chose the September release date to maximize on holiday gift buying during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. They are hoping to cash in on DVD sales throughout the holidays and up until the theatrical release of Star Wars: Episode III, which is set for release nationwide May 25, 2005.
Each of the three films in the Star Wars Trilogy has been digitally restored and remastered by THX for sound and picture quality. The films will be sold exclusively as a collection and not seperately.

Who cares? Not me! I\'m just posting this to create :nerd: pandamonium.
It is not clear if the ones that were cleaned up and released in 97 will be included on this boxset, will be released later, or will ever be released at all.
-
Fanally....
what took them soo bloody long.
If I have to endure another God awful Prequal before the release of the original trilogy on DVD… there WILL be HELL TO PAY !
/me remembers the south park eps were lucas "re-masters" radiers of the lost arc and makes it :ghey:
-
Actually, it has been also announced it will be the cleaned up SE\'s from the late 90\'s. Lucas said the original\'s will never be on DVD.
-
Too bad they aren\'t HD releases.
-
What took them so long?

:(   :( :(
Does anyone else dislike the SEs as much as I do? Bleccchhh. All the extra CG monsters really did :ghey: it up. Thank god I still have the originals on VHS somewhere.... But the image quality is so poor! Oh I\'m screwed.
-
Well, the SE\'s to me were pretty damn good with the exception of one scene involving a rather unfortunate encounter at a bar with the worst photoshop effect ever causing Han to abruptly "teleport" in his seat to dodge the first incoming shot from none other then Greedo. Restore the original and I\'ll be happy. :)

True that
I nearly spat out my popcorn when i saw that for the first time.
-
what??? htere only releasing the se??? i hope they put a option so you dont have to see the extra scenes
-
its ok Kopking... we can always look away and hummm during the Solo / Greedo scene.
Lucas can\'t force us to watch it.... or can he :( :crying: .
-
yea, some are ok, like say seeing x wings landing in the back ground, but some suck, like in jabbas palace, seeing that blue fuzzy creature sing, it just sucks beyond belief
-
It wasn\'t all bad... we did get to see more of wedge and biggs.
:wedge:
-
yea, but most of the time when they add cgi in the scenes, its done v bad, it would be better if they done it where u can choose, how it was originally or the scenes cut out......
kinda like robocop, when u can have the original one, or choose to play the more gorier version
-
HAHAHAHA, you bought Robocop......
-
nope, mate did, the first move is great, the rest just suck
-
I think they should take out all of the guns and light sabers and replace them with cell phones like in ET.

Heh....I did like the first RoboCop. And yes, never let mm forget. :D

I don\'t like how they introduce Jabba in Star Wars. I thought it was cool not knowing what he looks like until ROTJ. I would rather have the originals, but oh well. I\'m gonna buy them anyway!
-
Jabba was cut from the original starwars, here he is!!!

This scene was eddited with CGI and added to the SE.

Be thankful you\'re getting anything if you\'re only complaint is that it\'s taken them this long -- Lucas wanted to wait until all the prequels were done before releasing a single DVD of the series, but then let up on fan demand and it\'s going to bite us in the @$$ when all is said and done. Just think, you can buy Star Wars Episode 1 and 2 now, then 4, 5, and 6 in September and then 3 when it comes out holiday season 2005. Fast forward two more years and it\'s the 30th anniversary of Star Wars and you know what that means -- MEGA BOX SET! ... Though I\'m falling right into his advertising trap, I can\'t tell Lucas no when it comes to Star Wars. I just can\'t.

Buying it Tuesday! I can\'t wait! So many changes! Lets get some SERIOUS updates to this thread...
First off, a quality of transfer update. The best quality home release to date has been the Laserdisc editions from 1995 which were, I believe, the original versions of the trilogy. Here are some comparison pictures compliments of Manabyte on the GAF boards.
1995 Laserdisc:

Now, that\'s pretty impressive. However, here\'s some stuff that may turn off many hardcore Star Wars fans compliments of ign.dvd. Here are some shots of the changes to the DVD editions of the films:

The revamped Jabba the Hutt. You can see the original in this thread to compare.

No comment on this one. I can explain WHY he\'s there for those who don\'t yet know, but it does tread into spoilers for Episode III so It\'s really on a request basis only.

The much improved lightsabres.
Now, here\'s some things that are not (and are) pictured that are changes to the dvd\'s. It\'s just a list so enjoy them for what it\'s worth...
Episode IV: A New Hope
# Lots of matte lines removed. The space under Luke\'s speeder looks much more realistic.
# R2D2\'s blue parts are much cleaner and more consistent.
# The 1997 animation added to the entrance to Mos Eisley is much smoother.
# Greedo and Han shoot at the same time, and Han\'s dodge is far more realistic.
# Jabba has been retexturized and looks considerably better. Han still walks on his tail, but it\'s much smoother.
# The lettering on various Death Star panels are written in Aurebesh rather than English.
# The matte-painted hall in Leia\'s detention block looks much more realistic.
# Lightsabers look much better. Colors are far brighter and the blades are more defined.
Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
# Ian McDiarmid has refilmed scenes as the Emperor instead of that near-fossil they had.
# The conversations between Vader and Palpatine has a few new lines. Palpatine knows that Luke is Vader\'s son.
# Light sabers are again fixed, making them more consistent.
# Temuera Morrison does the voice of Boba Fett
# Luke\'s inane scream when he jumps to escape Vader on Cloud City is gone. And there was much rejoicing.
Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
# Like the other two, the light sabers are fixed.
# The Rancor looks considerably better, with its matte lines removed.
# When Vader\'s helmet is removed, his eyebrows are gone and his eyes are recolored to match Hayden\'s.
# Celebrations on Naboo, Coruscant and one other planet, where a statue is toppled right before we see the celebration with the ewoks.
# Perhaps this was in the 1997 special editions, but in the various background shots of the new Death Star, its appearance changes and you can see progress as the station takes shape.
# Hayden Christensen replaces Sebastian Shaw as Anakin\'s ghost. Lucas explains this in the commentary, which is spoilerish for Episode III.
Anyways, I\'m excited. I can\'t wait till Tuesday!
-
I have it on order from Amazon. I\'ll get it whenever, but that\'s ok with me. Not looking forward to the ways in which Lucas will have further ruined and all three films. Hayden Christensen in Return of the Jedi is the worst of all, but after all who cares? Jedi was always the turd of the three anyway. The minor changes to Empire are the ones I loathe the most. Nothing wrong with the scream.
-
I liked it without the scream. It had a dignity about it that way.
-
Ummmm....
i am curious about something, I remember back in my freshman year in 1998/1999 in high school, my teacher shown us Star Wars, I believe its Star Wars: IV or something, and the whole class have to watch it.
I was among many students who nearly fell asleep when we watch like half way through the movie...
so, I am not sure what the fuss its all about...I thought the movie were decent....i am just curious what makes it so popular even to this day?
-
Why in the hell would they show you Star Wars in High School?
If you thought the film was boring, then don\'t bother trying to understand it. It was a cultural phenomenon for people who were children in 1977.
-
Not sure,
probably he\'s a fan of Star Wars or something. Maybe it was a day for us to watch movies for entertainment, you know how some classes they let you watch video such as near holidays...
Can\'t remember if we have to do quizzes on it...because that would be weird...
-
If ever there was a case of a movie being released in the right place at the right time, Star Wars would be the prime example. It basically revitalized Hollywood, which were making nothing but ultra realistic movies at the time, and appealed to just about every walk of life in America who were bombarded daily by the different political problems from the Vietnam war and the shady politicians of the era.
On top of that, no one had seen anything like it before in America or overseas which made it a internationally accepted phenomenon.
-
*best boxset ever*
-
I look forward to it, I\'ve also heard there\'s a teaser for Episode III included in the box set.
That alone will push sales through the roof. However the teaser will be on any file-sharing program within minutes of release.
-
Dman it..... its out today over here :(
and i need to decide whether to get the DVD now or hold of a couple of weeks and get Starwars Battlefront on friday....
:(
Or.... I could trade in a few old games pick up both in game for £60 on friday.

If your gonna get SW:BF, get it for xbox, which im guessing your planning on doing anyway... Just a heads up incase you haven\'t been reading the reviews.

Can\'t wait until tomorrow! Finally!

Digitalbits is reporting audio errors that would warrant a recall.

I bought it from Best buy because I had 40 bucks in rewards money. So it cost me 3 bucks.
We have watched 4 and 5 so far. Logan wants to watch 6 tomorrow. Oye.
Personally I think he did a bit too much new CG in the first one. Especially in the star port city where Luke and Obi go to meet Han. WHen Obi One gets stopped by the storm troopers in the land speeder there are robots and animals walking right across the screen in the forground. Very annoying.
-
This DVD set will be awesome but I really don\'t see why they didn\'t include the originals in with the SE.

Its Lucas\'s loss really. If he released the two versions in the box set, people would still pay it....I think. But it would also be cool to compare the original and the Special Edition.
-
They also added a couple extra scenes didn\'t they? I mean from the original. THere are a couple scenes I just didn\'t remember. I never remembered Jaba the Hut being in Episode IV. The scene with Han and Jaba before they take off where Jaba says he needs his money just didn\'t look right. I mean obviously the original wasn\'t CG, but I don\'t remember the scene at all.

[asthmatic starwars geek] The scene you are refering to was not in the original but was later added to the Special Edition. It gave you a better understanding who Han owed money to and why he had to get money fast and what he was smuggling. They should send you to live in isolation on Endor for not knowing that.[/asthmatic starwars geek]

Here\'s a question for old-timer Star Wars viewers. Those who saw the first film in it\'s original release in 1977, or the rerelease a couple years later.
True or False: The opening text crawl did NOT include the name "Episode IV: A New Hope."
I honestly don\'t know for sure. I don\'t remember seeing that back in 1977, and I don\'t think it was there.
It seems that a lot of the history of the Star Wars productions has been rewritten by Lucas himself, especially in the documentary on Disk 4 of the DVD release. For example, he states again that he had all three stories written before the script for the first film was finished. He says he decided to shorten it, and only film the first 1/3 of the story to begin with. I don\'t believe that, and I\'ve never believed it. It\'s obvious from the way he wrote the Luke and Leia characters that he didn\'t know they were going to be brother and sister until after the first film was released.
-
True or False: The opening text crawl did NOT include the name "Episode IV: A New Hope."
True, it was not included. You can see this in the "Empire of Dreams" documentary on the fourth disk full of special features. They don\'t point it out, but seeing it missing (Episode IV) was enough to confirm it.
Correct. The 1995 special editions released in theatres contained a number of additional shots, scenes, and remakes of already incorporated scenes. Jabba the Hutt was reedited into the film over a large fat man who was to be the original Jabba the Hutt before they made him a large slug in Return of the Jedi. The 1995 CG looked great back in the day, but in 2004, it looked horrible and they went ahead and redid him again. He still looks flaky to me, but eh, how can you make a walking talking slug look photo realistic?
-
I didn\'t think I remembered it being episode 4 in the beginning.
I have to say it was fun watching the first two again. All the references they make to what happened in Episodes 1 and 2 were interesting.
-
NOoooooooooooooo!

Damn.. Cant you see the original movie on the DVD with out that homo?
I was thinking of buying the box. :(
-
^ yea that kinda ruins it. Its meant to be what he was before he turned to the dark side, but wouldn\'t u think luke turning him back to the light side would have been enough to just leave the original actor there.
morons.
-
I haven\'t seen return of the jedi yet since I was a kid. Is that near the end after poppa dies?
-
Vid if my memory serves me it up on the Pathways of the ewoks city when Luke tells Lea they are bro and sis and then han comes along and they all make pretty and then it pans over there to see those three smiling about it... Of course I havent seen it since it came out so I might be wrong.
I hated this one the most the damn ewoks ruined it kinda like Jar Jar ruined the new ones.
-
I have no idea what you\'ve said. Your avatar has my attention.
-
I said she loves sucking on tounge can you tell?
-
Hayden is there for good reason and it\'s explained in the commentary why. It does make sense. That doesn\'t mean I think the change is some great idea or anything like that, but I understand the reasoning behind it, especially since it serves continuity purposes.
-
how is the commentary on the series?

I am sorry I have noting to add to star was because I am not a huge fan. But that avatar is awesome.

HEADLINE: \'STAR POWERS\'
BYLINE: SCOTT HETTRICK
HIGHLIGHT:
Fox DVD, videogame draw $ 115 mil
BODY:
The force is richer than ever.
Consumers around the world spent more than $ 115 million on the "Star Wars Trilogy" DVD and the LucasArts "Star Wars Battlefront" videogame combined on Tuesday, according to 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.
Though Fox would not break that number down, it\'s believed that about 90% of the spending was for the DVD worldwide, with a big chunk of that coming from the U.S.
Most of the $ 115 mil goes to Lucas\' companies, which publish and distribute the videogame and which pays only a distrib fee to Fox for distribution of all the home video versions of the trilogy movies except for "Star Wars."
Fox splits revs with Lucas on the home video of the original film.
European countries led by the U.K, France and Germany, contributed a disproportionate share of the revenue in American dollars, given the exchange rate that favors particularly France and the U.K.
While the $ 115 million is huge by any measure or comparison, it\'s difficult to put the unprecedented claim into perspective for several reasons:
Although the number is growing, few DVDs are released simultaneously worldwide;
Even fewer videogames related to a movie are released exactly the same day;
There are no global franchises of the magnitude of "Star Wars" to compare (the five films thus far have generated more than $ 3.4 billion in box office grosses worldwide --- not adjusted for inflation), particularly with the packaged release of three original films in a single set.
Because of the high price point for the set of three films --- $ 69.98 suggested retail price and a rough average consumer purchase price in the U.S. of $ 40-$ 45, as compared to about $ 15-$ 18 for recent big seller "The Passion of the Christ" (also from Fox), the "Star Wars Trilogy" will not come close to setting any single-day or single-week or all-time sales records in terms of the number of copies purchased.
But if consumers purchase somewhere close to 8 million copies in the U.S., a realistic projection, that could translate to nearly $ 350 million in consumer spending, which could rank "The Star Wars Trilogy" as one of the top moneymaking DVDs of the year --- along with "Passion," "Spider-Man 2," and "Shrek 2" --- and among the top 15 or so of all time, according to Variety sister publication DVD Exclusive.
A combined 125 million copies of all the various videocassette and laserdisc versions of the original three "Star Wars" films and all formats of the two most recent movies in the series, "The Phantom Menace" and "Attack of the Clones," have been purchased by consumers, according to Fox. The studio has previously reported more than 70 million of those copies were videocassettes of the original three movies sold worldwide since the mid-1980s.
The spending on the DVD and videogame will grow rapidly over the next few days as the videogame makes its debut later this week overseas and the DVD gets released for the first time in major countries such as Japan, Australia, and Mexico.
-
how is the commentary on the series?
It\'s decent, but hardly anything worth an uproar. The empire of dreams documentary on the fourth disk, on the other hand, is friggin great. 2.5 hours long so pop popcorn for it.
-
I\'m looking forward to that disc. I will probably watch Jedi tonight and pop that disc in over the weekend.
-
Wow. Just bought it today. Stayed home and watched a lot of it. The commentary was very nicely done. It was cool to see how Lucas casted the people for the roles and how he found them.
2 Thumbs up over here.
-
44 bucks at best buy what other prices did other people get it for?
-
41.99 - Free Shipping
:)

42 at Target.
-
I\'m gonna buy it too soon. I can\'t wait for Episode 3 later on this year.
-
If you don\'t buy it by Tuesday it will probably go up to full price. That\'s what most movies do.
-
Free for me, brother bought it hehe..
It does indeed look a lot cleaner, although they could have rotoscoped the sabers a lot more.
-
I got it yesterday, I sort of killed 2 birds with 1 stone, and pre-ordered GTA SA as well. The first thing I watched, was the feature on the return of Darth Vader, that got the blood flowing a bit.

39.99 at kmart. Sort of repost from beginning. Just letting those know who didn\'t read whole thread.

OK, I just watched the end of Return of the Jedi (with commentary), and sorry... Lucas\' explanation isn\'t good enough. There\'s no valid reason to replace Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen in that scene. It makes no sense. Lucas probably wanted to stick Ewan McGregor in that shot also, but someone probably warned him that even HE, the almighty Lucas, couldn\'t crap on Alec Guinness\' memory in that way.
There are only a few good scenes in Return of the Jedi, but that\'s not enough for me to want to see it again for a long long time. The Empire Strikes Back however, holds up very well. It\'s still the best of all the SW films, and it cannot be equaled. The editing, the score, the style, and the quality of the acting performances... all of it blows away the other films. I have spoken.

Spot on with that analysis there.
Apart from the lightsaber duel between DV & LS, ROTJ is pretty bland, those furry little teddy bear ewok things do nothing to adhere the film to me as much as the first 2.
The empire strikes back was by far the best of the bunch for me.

err it does make sense.... When Anakin becomes Vader, who he is as Anakin dies and is reborn as Vader (explained in part 3) When Luke brings him back to the light side he is still Vader, therefore dies as Vader. So it makes perfect sense that when he\'s now part of the force (ghost whatever) he\'s Anakin again..
-
I agree with Soully.
It makes sense to me too.
Can also look at it as they are shown as how they died.
ANakin dies in episode 3 looking the way he does in episode 6. Well technically he dies when he becomes Vader.

But he didn\'t really die when he became Vader. That\'s what Obi Wan says in ROTJ to cover his ass for his earlier lie to Luke, but it\'s later proven untrue. Luke says that "there\'s still good in him" and Anakin says "you were right." Obviously the "good" Anakin didn\'t completely die during whatever trauma that occured in episode III. He died as Anakin on the deck of the Death Star II, so I think he should appear as that adult, mature figure after he joins the Force. That would be be in keeping with Obi Wan joining the Force as Alec Guinness instead of Ewan McGregor.

I wanted to beat Lucas with a dead Ewok when I saw he changed the ending of Jedi. Hokey smokes! I was surprised to hear myself scream "NOOOOOOOOOO!"

I agree with Soully.
It makes sense to me too.
Can also look at it as they are shown as how they died.

But Anakin was reborn at the end of Episode 6 :vader:

I think I may have gotten a defective DVD. I watched A New Hope yesterday and it was fine. However I tried watching the Empire Strikes Back, and it did not work. So I tried the other two disc, and they did work.
WTF? Did I get a bad ESB DVD?
This is on my computer mind you.

Not to be a smartass - but I think you answered your own question.
Let me break it down..
New Hope = Plays
Empire Strikes back = Does not Play.
Return of the Jedi = Plays.
Extra Disc = Plays.
Hmm. My brilliant logical deduction comes up with the theory that you do indeed have a defective disc!
Oddly enough Empire Strikes Back was the one Star Wars film where Lucas did not have total control and was even directed by someone else.

he should have just let someone else run with his ideas, he thinks about selling action figures too much, hence we get jar jar binks.

That is really what he has done with the Expanded Universe.. In a recent interview with Mr.Lucas he talks about how after Episode III he wants to let other people run with the idea\'s , maybe with a TV series. Should be interesting, tho\' I can\'t say I care for the current Clone Wars series.

When anakin became vader who he was died. its that simple. Part 3 is going to show u exactly how anakin dies.
when vader dies after luke brings him back to the light side. He isn\'t anakin.. He is still vader.... (more machine then man, etc)
Also, obiwan says that vader is lukes father, but he also explains that when he became vader, anakin died.. It just depends on the point of view...

Ok, should I call Amazon or the company that makes the DVDs?
-
Amazon, infact, just e-mail them. They will replace it.
-
Amazon is the easiest retailer to deal with when it comes to returns. You just go to the website, view your previous order, and click the button or whatever to return it. You can print a return mailing label from the website.

Did anyone else notice the defective audio at the end of A New Hope when the X-wings go in to attack the death star? The music is supposed to swell greatly right after red leader says "I\'m going to cut across the axis and try and draw their fire." Instead, it just dies out. I heard this was a really BIG problem on all versions of the DVD. Anyone else encounter it?

I\'m going to try it on a regular DVD player and if it still doesn\'t work I will return it and have them send me another one.
