Title: Now they warn us
Post by: Titan on February 10, 2004, 07:07:38 PM
Microsoft issues a critical warning to 2000, XP, NT users. I\'ve never been so glad to own 98 SE :p

****ing Microsoft... getting tired of all these bugs.

Oh cry me a river.

(1) Lord knows Windows 98 never had any problems. I\'m sorry - but 2K  / NT / XP are way more stable than 98 ever dreamed of being. Not to mention, a lot of these bugs can be fixed if people would simply use "WINDOWS UPDATE".  Instead, the average user sits around, clicks "CANCEL" when Windows Update beckons and then, when they get infected / exploited, they whine and bitch about MS and exploits. Come on, be responsible. A computer is like a car, take care of it, change the oil , apply patches. You get the drift.

(2) You think you can do better, Vivi? I\'m sure MS would love to hire you, Mr. Perfect . Be realistic, when you have source code this large and so many components working together, there is no way to make it invunerable. It\'s going to happen. Now take in account a large user base, equals a larger target for "hackers" .

(3) Bitch and moan, bitch and moan. That\'s all you people do.  Don\'t like it? Get another OS. There is Linux, OS X, and other options. You are not limited becuase MS makes you use Windows. You are limited because you are lazy.

Seriously, everytime I download one of their updates my computer gets more jacked up. It fixes one thing just to break another.

We\'re limited because most software is made for just Windows or Mac

You\'re limited, because you\'re stupid and lazy... First off, you said it yourself, software is made for the Apple Operating System (OS X) - so what is your excuse for not going to it? Second, there is plenty of great software for Linux and guess what? It\'s free, it just requires you to use your brain, something I know you\'re not use to doing.

Yes, the software is not what you\'re use to, but it is there. You just refuse to move to another OS, because then you wouldn\'t have the right to bitch and moan.

LIC:

You\'re limited, because you\'re stupid and lazy...

You whine and complain, try to post something intelligent, but you\'re too damn stupid to actually accomplish it. The list goes on and on. You are a dumber version of (E).

Damn, LIC, as a forum moderator, you need to read the rules regarding personal insults, attacks, and flames.  You represent the authority on the board for this section.
Note of importance: he\'s "complaining" about the topic.  Your insulting him directly.
Rememberi that you\'re not supposed to "flame back" even if you think he\'s done something in other threads.

As for the topic at hand.  No big surprise, they\'re constantly finding these and eradicating them.  There are dozens of these "critical" fixes if you install from an early base XP or 2000 version.  99% of the time, no one is affected, because they don\'t announce it until they have a fix, and it will take even the best hackers a while to figure out a worthwhile way to exploit the holes.

If you think for one second, I am goin\' to be polite to a racist person who has made jokes about people with cancer, then you are sorely mistaken.

I thank you for the moral patrol, but I give respect when it\'s deserved. I refuse to give it to (E) and Vivi. Both of them go out of their way to cause problems on this board .

Also, the rules went out on this forum along time ago, you should know this. When is the last time you saw anyone uphold them? The only rule that really still maintains is the no Warez / porn rule..

With this said, I will admit I went overboard with my insult to Vivi, so I deleted my above mentioned post.
Are we all happy?
Good.

No, no, no... Windows is great, I have no problem with it... My gripe is with their stupid updates that seem to be so buggy. My computer worked best without them. From now on I only get the necessary updates like that Blaster worm one.... The rest just dick things up.

When people of good concience begin to look the other way for rule infractions, the system breaks down.  Maybe that\'s whey this particular section of the board is so "trashy" at times.

In any event, the answer is not to flame them in the board, but to use your mod powers and get rid of their inflamatory posts when you\'ve determined they\'ve overstepped the rules/boundaries of the board.

:p s\'cool that you deleted the flame though.  Don\'t go down to their level.

On topic again:
That\'s a good rule of thumb swifdi.  If it doesn\'t look absolutely critical, just don\'t install it.  It seems like half the time two or three different updates try to fix the same areas and just mess each other up if you try to do it at once.  It takes forever (the first time), but I find that installing less than 3 minor (but still critical updates) or 1 major update at a time keeps a lot of bad stuff from happening.

Fatal, you have to also understand that I get tired of deleting posts. I delete a post, for the same person can post again about how some "NAZI MODERATOR DELETED MY F***KIN POST". It gets old. Or I delete a post and then someone starts pm\'in Ryu and then we all have to discuss why I deleted a post or who should have their posts deleted...It gets old fast.

And point taken Swifidi.
What OS you runnin?

Take it to the other mods and ban \'em all I say...  It\'s not like we don\'t have enough posters that missing a few of the most obnoxious would really detract from the boards.  I\'d prefer a better, but \'slower\' board to, well... what we\'ve got.

If they complain about deletions... well, that is a rule on most boards I\'ve seen - no complaining about the mod\'s decisions publicly.  On most boards, that\'s a 1 week ban for the first offence, and it works.  This board, as we all know, is a dictatorship, and I wouldn\'t mind seeing some warnings and such to see it cleaned up a but.

(I\'m not passing judgement on Vivi specifically, since I\'m not a mod, just making a suggestion)

Agreed wholeheartidly.  I\'m lazy, I use Windows, all works well.  I do acknowledge the the technical glory that is OSX, but anything before that which is Mac related = trash.  Plain and simple.  I suppose I could learn Linux, but again, I\'m lazy.  :)

Take it from someone who used previous Apple OS\'es due to the fact I didn\'t want to be limited by Windows....Previous Apple OS\'s, well, sucked. They did. I made the jump to OS X and I love it. Very stable. But to get a lot of common Window things done, it requires more thought and effort. Not exactly "user-friendly".

Part of it is that as big is Microsoft is it keeps the little people down and well when you do that they get pissed and find ways to hack into your system and give  you a bad name, trust me Linux is just as easy to get into.

I never said 98 never did have problems. I\'m just said I\'m glad I have it NOW because of this critical warning. I\'ve had a crapload of problems with 98.

Personally, I think you dont deserve to be a moderator, as it seems as you cause most of the trouble and arguments in the forum. Im sure others agree.

Ah, I remember the days when I campaigned like this to be a moderator on an above-average popular Message Board on the Internet...

...back in May of 1999 when I was 12 going on 13.

I have to disagree with you. I\'m not sucking up to LIC or anything but I personally think he\'s doing a fine job. He does need to chill out a bit but the amount of spam and worthless threads in this forum have gone down since he became mod.

Your only saying LIC is a nice guy and blah blah, because you think he is.

I use to think he was a great guy, we had same taste in music (mostly), he was funny, I read all of his posts, etc.

Then he flips the table and just decides to totally abuse his powers, to the point that you cant stand it anymore, all because a disagreement.

Don\'t provoke him in ways like this and I\'m sure he\'ll lay off you a lot.  I\'m not siding with anyone, just letting you know that repeatidly calling him out won\'t get you anywhere.  If it continues just PM him directly about it, you\'d be amazed how much can be cleared up simply by talking.

I think he\'s a nice guy because I haven\'t been a dick to him and visa versa. I don\'t know what the feud between you and him is but I say talk to him if you are really annoyed with him. Like Bozco said, you\'d be suprised at the results.

Not deleting your post, Spudz. It\'s not worth it. Don\'t like me? That\'s fine. I don\'t care.

Bozco is right. Him and I didn\'t use to get along. We settled it in PM\'s  - do you see him whining? NO. Same with a couple other members. You are the only one who constantly complains about things being wrong and people picking on you. You and VIVI have been nothing but problem makers for everyone on this board. Why should I treat you two like other members? You don\'t deserve it. Give respect, get respect. It\'s that simple, bud.

Back on topic:> Titan, my point was that 98 isn\'t near as stable as 2K. Yes, 2K XP have all these critical warnings, but you have to realize the userbase size. It\'s a huge target. If you keep your system up to date, you\'ll be okay. I would prefer a stable system, that I can update and maintain as opposed to an instable system (from the old age) .

I agree with you on that. I\'ve been trying to get my mom to get a new computer. I\'m tired of 98. Its so unstable that I\'ve had errors just running netscape and AIM. It freezes all the time and is just a crappy OS. I would rather have XP and update it as often as possible than this one. I was just merely making a joke in the beginning of the thread. For every error on XP, theres 50 on 98.
