Title: For the sake of Baseball sign this petition.
Post by: Mr. Kennedy on February 16, 2004, 05:23:57 AM
As you all know, the yankees are acquiring yet another all-star, but this time, it\'s the best player in the game, A-rod.  Now, what you probably don\'t know is that their payroll would exceed $200 million, and their luxury tax would be higher than 60% of MLB team salaries.  Baseball has been getting worse year in and year out, and I really think its time to put a cap on spending.

I\'m a sox fan, but I\'m a small-market fan too, please join the cause and sign this petition.

Stop Steinbrenner! (http://www.petitiononline.com/mlb70371/petition.html)

ruined the NFL?

You think it\'s fun for ONE team to grossly outspend all the others?  I\'d be a little more pissed if they had won like 8 world series in a row, but how the f**k are small market teams supposed to compete?

And yes I know the Marlins won last year but they were a fluke.  They won\'t get anywhere close to the playoffs this year.

I understand that the NFL is exciting cause you don\'t really know who the best team is until the superbowl is over.  Over 60% of the teams are still alive at the end of the season and all have a shot at the playoffs.

Baseball needs a salary cap and even distribution of profits.  I used to really love baseball, but now i\'d like to see it rot and die.  That\'ll be the only way anything will change.

But I understand why Yankee fans see no problem with the current system, I wouldn\'t be complaining either. :(

Online petitions are gay.
People who sign them are gay.
Baseball is gay.
If all three things are gay and in the same thread, that must mean this thread is..... GAY .

Pfft.  I hate the Yanks too, but come on.  The sox could have had A-Rod, and they blew it.  They have no one to blame but themselves.  The Yanks did give up a very young guy who had 40-40 potential every year, so it\'s not like this deal was for nothing.

That is why small markets benefit from the draft. I do not think profits should  be distributed evenly this is not a democracy.

Why do you think it is so hard for a team to win back to back superbowls? Because teams are always changing cause of salary cap. And player contracts are only getting larger and larger. And it sucks when a team cannot afford to bring back guys who have been there for years because they don\'t have the cap for it.

Your talking about a 57 player team with a salary cap of 70-75million omg.

If rosters stuck together for a period of time it would make better football. I just think If a team has higher profits they should be able to spend a little more.

Or should be given some kind of player rebates.

Look at cleveland labron james is estimated to generate over 2billion dollars for that franchise in the spand of his career it took them a long time but if finally happen for them.

Well, there is a bit of a difference.  Say you set the salary cap at 100 million.  Any team can easily operate under 100 million, going over that is just overkill.

Of course, remember that in sports like the NBA that have a cap, you can go over the cap to resign your own players.  What would be wrong with having a salary cap like that?  Who is hurt then?  You just can\'t sign MORE high priced players.  I don\'t really see who that hurts.  I think it would really be ideal for baseball.

And as for not being able to keep your players because of the cap, I think it\'s even more of a shame when you can\'t keep them because you can\'t afford to.  Just look at Miguel Tejada.  That\'s just awful.

Don\'t you find it ironic that the two professional sports that don\'t have a salary cap are slowly dying?

MLB
NHL

The NHL is going bankrupt and will most likely institute a cap for all teams when / if they redo the structure of the league.  Baseball is headed for the same fate on it\'s current course.

Being able to go over the salary cap to resign your guys would help the nfl and major league baseball.

With the right coaching staff and good draft picks a small market can do very well. The things is they always have one guy and never develop any other guys around him. Then when his contract is up they can\'t resign him. Is it the yankee\'s fault hell no.

Salary cap is not killing MLB. The MLB baseball has never fully recovered from that player strike.

And with so many teams going out of the country to get players a lot people never no who is who.

And baseball has losts it\'s appeal with generation X.

As for the NHL well I am not takin nothing away from it but it has always gotten the short end of the stick.

Just never really had that mass market appeal like the other sports.

MLB is dying? Since when?

The Red Sox had a different situation than the Yankees, as far as A-Rod goes.

A. The Red Sox couldn\'t afford Manny Ramirez ($20M/year) and A-Rod ($25M/year) so they were forced to trade Manny if they were to get A-Rod.

B. The Red Sox were going to be forced to pay ~$30M~/year for A-Rod if the Rangers accepted Manny in trade. Not worth it. The Yankees got a good deal, because the Rangers agreed to pay a chunk of salary.

Baseball sucks ass and it is COMPLETELY from lack of salary cap.  That and the length of the season.  Games are pretty damn meaningless until the end.

Hell, they are meaninless anyway because all the season is for is to see who plays the yankess for it all.

Yeah, there should be a salary cap and yes.. MLB is on a downswing because of it.

It\'s still attracting plenty of people though, in big-market venues like Fenway and Safeco anyway.. *cough* Seeing as how the Angels won the World Series in 2002 and the Marlins in 2003, I don\'t think salary is much of an issue. BTW, I like the length of the baseball season. It gives me something to watch on a daily basis during the summertime!

Boone tore up his leg in an offseason basketball game and was out for the upcoming season, so the Yanks had a huge hole to fill.

And boy did they fill it.

Jeter has been the leader of this team for quite a while now, SS is his position.  A-Rod is just happy to be on a winning team, he dosen\'t care about switiching positions.  The bad blood and infighting it could cause isn\'t worth it.

And A-rod is a Gold glove SS, but Jeter is a guy you don\'t want to alienate.

I\'ve always hated baseball. I fall asleep whenever I watch it and I hate the Yankees. They keep bringing in all star players and its hard for other teams to beat them and win the World Series. Like stated earlier, the Marlins win was luck.

During the World Series, I was getting a lot of grief from friends who are Yankees fans. They said that the Yankees would win and I\'m dumb for saying the Marlins would win. Well they won and my friends had nothing to say. I never did watch the game.

So lets see. The Yankees trade for another superstar, and give them even less chemistry. Ho-hum.

Yankees pitching staff has a bunch of questions. Not about talent, but about health and age. Basically, if their pitching fails, they\'re screwed. As the Yankees themselves witnessed last Autumn, Good Pitching beats Good hitting...doesn\'t help when Josh Beckett is pitching out of his mind, either.

Lets all be happy that the Yankees didn\'t land Vlad Guererro. Had that happened, along with A-Rod...oh dear god. Bad happenings would be afoot. They don\'t have everybody, but they have a lot. Honestly, I think they\'re goona choke on the high expectations. To who?

Well, I\'m a tad biased :-D (CUBS CUBS CUBS).

Im not signing your thing because, well I hate baseball.  Ouch, i sprained my pinky, im out for 3 weeks.  That kind of attitude doesn\'t fly with me.  Personally, besides pitching, anyone can play some form of professional baseball, all you have to do is catch and throw.  If you don\'t know how to do that, you aren\'t reading this.  Or you are vapor snake.

Greg de Vries

The Rangers statistically should be ahead of Detroit and the Avs - just look at their payroll and the talent on that team.  The Yankees are no different in that respect, but they win.

I mean look at this talent and they can\'t even make the freaking playoffs!?!?

Potential Superstars, superstars OR former 1st round draft picks

Jaromir Jagr
Pavel Bure - IR
Eric Lindros - IR
Brian Leetch
Alexei Kovalev
Bobby Holik
Petr Nedved - 2nd overall pick in 1990
Martin Rucinsky
Darius Kasparaitis
Dan Blackburn - IR

Only Leetch and Kovalev were originally drafted by the Rangers and Kovalev was traded away 1998 only to be reacquired during the Pens firesale.  Dan Blackburn has been on IR and hasn\'t quite proven himself yet.  Messier is having an decent season that most players would be jealous of given his age.

You have a good 4 - 5 HOF players right there and all but one have been imported.

The thing is, you can\'t build a team entirely out of super stars like that.  You have to have roleplayers, more tough players.

Besides, a lot of those players are past their primes.  I mean, I don\'t need to tell you that Eric Lindros isn\'t what he once was.  Same goes for a lot of those guys.  But the fact remains, someone like Jagr wasn\'t what the Rangers needed.  They need tough defensemen who stay back and play defense.  Then they will improve, and not until then.  That\'s been their need for years and they have thrown money away just getting the biggest names available instead.

The Yanks actually spend intelligently.  They needed a 3b when Boone went down.  So they got someone to fill that hole.  Now they\'re going after Maddux after losing 3 pitchers in the offseason and only really getting two back.  It all makes sense.  You hate them for being able to do it, but it makes sense.

Hey I don\'t care about baseball, but the NHL and MLB do have one thing in common and that is the need for a salary cap.  Eric Lindros was having his best season in years before getting another concussion and with that much offense they should be putting the puck in the net a lot more often than they are.

I think if a team has lots of money they should be able to spend how they please. Salary cap is not fair all the time and has it\'s disadvantages.

If u got it and wanna spend you should be able too.

A rod has a 120million dollar contract maybe a salary cap should be on player salaries.

C. Maddux isn\'t really washed up. He had a slightly off year last year, but still posted 15+ wins. Is he the Greg Maddux that won the Cy Young 4 times? No. I think he still has a few seasons left, though.

Even if the Yankees win the Series, they had to break the $200 million salary mark and destroy the spirit of baseball in order to do it. Warrants mentioning.

On the flip side, if the Sox had landed A-Rod -- with the assist from Bud Selig allowing them a bargaining window that flagrantly violated the collective bargaining agreement -- any championship would have carried a small asterisk with it. Everyone would have said, "You could only end the curse because the Commish bent the rules for you." Who wants that? I would rather win without help. Maybe I\'m crazy.

I never said the NBA salary cap was unfair it lets you go over to sign your own guys and you can restructure it to get new guys.

I think the NFL salary cap it is the worst because there are way more guys and on the team to sign and a lot of team can\'t afford to resign guys because they don\'t have the money. It would be nice if a team  could break the salary cap to at least keep there own guys.

Baseball is different from any other sport, very different. For instance, in most sports you score points or goals; in baseball you score runs. In most sports the ball, or object, is put in play by the offensive team; in baseball the defensive team puts the ball in play, and only the defense is allowed to touch the ball. In fact, in baseball if an offensive player touches the ball intentionally, he\'s out; sometimes unintentionally, he\'s out. [/color]

Also: in football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and all sports played with a ball, you score with the ball and in baseball the ball prevents you from scoring.

In most sports the team is run by a coach; in baseball the team is run by a manager. And only in baseball does the manager or coach wear the same clothing the players do. If you\'d ever seen John Madden in his Oakland Raiders uniform,you\'d know the reason for this custom.

Now, I\'ve mentioned football. Baseball & football are the two most popular spectator sports in this country. And as such, it seems they ought to be able to tell us something about ourselves and our values.

I enjoy comparing baseball and football:

Baseball is a nineteenth-century pastoral game.
Football is a twentieth-century technological struggle.

Baseball is played on a diamond, in a park. The baseball park!
Football is played on a gridiron, in a stadium, sometimes called Soldier Field or War Memorial Stadium.

Baseball begins in the spring, the season of new life.
Football begins in the fall, when everything\'s dying.

In football you wear a helmet.
In baseball you wear a cap.

Football is concerned with downs - what down is it?
Baseball is concerned with ups - who\'s up?

In football you receive a penalty.
In baseball you make an error.

In football the specialist comes in to kick.
In baseball the specialist comes in to relieve somebody.

Football has hitting, clipping, spearing, piling on, personal fouls, late hitting and unnecessary roughness.
Baseball has the sacrifice.

Football is played in any kind of weather: rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog...
In baseball, if it rains, we don\'t go out to play.

Baseball has the seventh inning stretch.
Football has the two minute warning.

Baseball has no time limit: we don\'t know when it\'s gonna end - might have extra innings.
Football is rigidly timed, and it will end even if we\'ve got to go to sudden death.

In baseball, during the game, in the stands, there\'s kind of a picnic feeling; emotions may run high or low, but there\'s not too much unpleasantness.
In football, during the game in the stands, you can be sure that at least twenty-seven times you\'re capable of taking the life of a fellow human being.

And finally, the objectives of the two games are completely different:

In football the object is for the quarterback, also known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy\'s defensive line. In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! - I hope I\'ll be safe at home!

You forgot to mention football is the biggest :ghey: ass grabbing sport in your list.  I don\'t really like football, but its better than baseball and basketball. ;)

Scarce, no, but getting one of the greatest baseball players ever by throwing some extra money around just isn\'t fair.

Slightly off-topic, but the Cubs just signed Greg Maddux to a 2-year deal.

Prior, Wood, Zambrano, Maddux, and Clement.. best rotation in the NL? I would say so, yeah.

Best rotation in the AL is a toughie. Oakland is always there, of course there\'s Boston, NYY, and the Angels..

I\'d say that the only NL staff that can stack up to the Cubs now might be the Astros. We\'ll see.
