Title: TV experts, I need help.
Post by: (e) on February 18, 2004, 04:24:12 PM
I moved my entertainment center downstairs, and am having trouble getting everything to work.

I need to get everything to turn on by itself, without having to do the turn on the vcr to get the ps2 on to start the dvd player type ordeal.

I was bored, and wanted to get this done so I made a picture.

Just connect the dots basically.

Maybe you should repost that image.  I can only see part of it.

Get a remote that does macros..  That rocks.

Or you could put any switched items on the switched power outlet of your receiver.  Although it doesn\'t sound like you have any switched stuff.

Oh, your attachment blows.

I would connect your little skinny black line to your big thick black line and do away with the wobbly green line completely. J/K

Kind of like that drawing No-One posted awhile back? The one where they had a subject, drawing then he dosed on some acid, and every hour drew a different picture?

Just get a video switchbox (http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=801178) and a universal remote (http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?stk_code=sonrmvl900) that does macros (pressing one button that does multiple commands, like turning on all your components or playing a DVD).

You should probably go ahead and hook your vcr and dvd player to your tv.

They aren\'t much fun by themselves.

Don;t you have a tuner?

IF not, go get a freaking tuner with at least 4 video inputs.  Then plug the output of the tuner into the tv.

Use the tuner as your switcher.

done.

i am not sure what you are wanted to do, but my guess is you wanted to connect your cable box to your tv rfu connection or maybe RCA (composite) type.

Then for your second connection,
you wanted to connect your vcr to your dvd player and the dvd player to your ps2 and the ps2 to your tv, right?

If that\'s the case, that\'s not possible.
How many Video inputs does your tv have?
based on your sources (ps2, dvd player, vcr, and cable box).  That\'s a total of 4 video inputs.  but you can connect the cable box to the vcr and the vcr to the tv RFU jack or red, white, blue connection also known as RCA and Compositve Video...

I will make a picture of video connection quality, from the picture.

The worst video quality is RFU as it carry both the video and audio signal in one cable.

The next connection is Composite RCA and a step up from RFU, and that\'s usually label in yellow color.  The yellow carry the video signal while red and white carry left and right channel audio.  I think your cable box and your VCR have both the RFU and Composite video connection.
Seeing that composite video give cleaner images than RFU, i recommend it if your tv support it.

A step up from composite is S-Video, this cable seperate the Y (brightness) and C (color).  This gives a much improve color than Composite.  i think your dvd player have this connection.  Your ps2 can too if you upgrade it to a s-video.  If your tv have S-Video connection, i recommend you to connect your ps2 or dvd player to this type.

The Best connection is Component, this cable seperate the video color imformation in Y (black and white level or brigthness), R (red) signal, and B (blue signal.)  I think your dvd player have this connection, so is your ps2 if you wanted to upgrade it to this cable.  The question is, does your tv have component jack?  If it does, then you are in luck, connect your ps2 or dvd player to this jack.
Depends on how many connections and what type of connections your tv have, if it were me, i connect the vcr to the cable box or cable box to the vcr.  Either is fine, and connect the leader to the tv via composite.  And i connect your ps2 to the tv best connection like component or s-video if the tv support it.  So is your dvd player.

But again, i am not sure what you really asking.  Maybe you want to turn all the machines(tv, dvd player, vcr, and cable box) on with one button.  That, i don\'t really know how.  Maybe get a special kind of remote control that does that like a learning remote or macros like videoholic said...

ARGH!!!!

Okay, Ill explain this the best I can.

I want all of my entertainment things to work seperatly, that is by themselves not depending on other things to turn on.

How am I going to do that?
///

Bleh, I dont think I could get it any more simple.

(e),

hmmm....unless your have some weird hook up, if you want to watch a movie out of a dvd player, you only turn on the dvd player and the tv.  I don\'t know how you need to have to turn on the vcr and the ps2 to play the dvd....

hold on, i am getting something here...you hook up your ps2 to your vcr?  If that\'s the case, no wonder you need to turn on the ps2 and the vcr.  Because the ps2 depend on the vcr if you hook up the RCA red, white, and yellow cables to the vcr instead straight to the tv.

I could be wrong.  Shrug.

Hmmm....:confuse:

let me ask this question:
How many Video inputs does your tv have?
By that how many red, white, and yello connection does your tv have?  Its the "INPUT" that\'s i am talking about.

if your tv have only 1 video input (meaning only 1 red, white, and yellow connection), then you need a video switcher with more inputs connecting to "connect your sources seperately so it won\'t depend on the other."

Alright.

TV to Cable to VCR to PS2.

As for the DVD player, if you hook it up to the VCR or PS2, you may have problems playing a movie due to Macrovision. Still, that\'s a lot of linking, when you could spend twenty dollars and buy a switcher for all of those devices.

What kind of TV do you have? What model? Size? Year? If you have an S-VIDEO outlet, I would hook up the DVD-player up via that. Or you could hook up the PS2 via S-VIDEO. Running everything RCA is a huge loss of video quality, I would know as I also use to run everything RCA / RF. I didn\'t go S-VID until about two years ago, then moved up to component lastnight ( :D ).

GET A FREAKING STEREO WITH VIDEO INPUTS!!!!!!!

Geeze.  DO you not have a stereo at all?

It\'s hard to find a stereo with less that 4 inputs for video.

Plug all of your shit into the stereo.

Plug your stereo output into the TV

You\'re freaking done.

Lay off the acid for a month and use that money to go buy a stereo (Tuner)
