Alright, how many here have a home theater or are working on one? If so - list your equipment . Keep in mind, an HT doesn\'t have to be fancy.
:)
I\'m currently re-doing mine..
Hitachi 53, HDTV WS, replaced my old Sony 41.
Cyberhome 402 for region free playing, runnin component.
Pioneer 5-disc DVD changer with built in 5.1 / DTS Receiver.
Sony CDP-CX825 200 Disc Cd Changer (given to me by Capcom
Dish Sattelite
I plan on re-doing it over the course of the next few months..
Replacing the Pioneer DVD/ Receiver with a dedicated AV Receiver, looking at a Harman Kardon AVR 430 which supports 7.1 and many other things.
Also replacing the Pioneer due to the fact the DVD Player part does not support component. Not sure what I am replacing it with, but I need a new player for my new TV.
Then, when my CC Gift Card comes in, I\'ll pick up a Replay TV and some new speakers / new sub.
After all that or in bewteen some of those purhases, a DVD-R / Couch / Movie Posters with frames.
-
I just have a 32 or 36 inch TV hooked up to a surround sound system and DVD player. Sounds and looks sweet though :) If I ever get rich, I want to invest alot into home theater sytems.
-
You don\'t need to be rich, unless you want to go the way of most the guy\'s over at http://www.avsforum.com, those guy\'s are dedicated! A lot of threads on that forum are about people building a house and factoring in the cost of a big dedicated HT into the loan, which if I ever build a house, is how I\'ll do it.
-
No matter how much money you put in though, it won\'t be like in the theaters exactly (unless your so rich you build your own theater). I love going to see movies more for the experience. Get that soggy, fatty popcorn, have some 500 pound guy with a fro sit in front of me, have the sticky floors and see it on a screen and stuff. Just not the same when you sit on the couch looking at a projector. I wish I owned my own movie theater :(
-
I have a 15in Daewoo TV with mono speaker sound. Does that count?
-
ihave like a big tv with a cup holder on the side.
found it at a garage sale, its prett-t-t-t ****ing sweet...
other than that, we have like a future projection project, and just a 32\'\'\' flat screen thing. has like jello in it.
-
You mean its plasma Spudz?
I have a 40"+ tv with an awesome surround sound system. our woofers are the biggest I\'ve ever seen

You do realize that bigger does not always equal better, right?
;)
-
out of intrest... whats the best way to start a home system ?
I mean what should you splash out on first ?
Sound system...?
TV....?
Projection....?
-
How much is your budget? If you go for a front projector, you\'re going to spend quite abit of money. Personally, my first thing would be a nice big widescreen RPTV ready for a HD Receiver. After that, find you a solid DVD player that supports progressive scan / component and a couple other things.. Then, save up for a good reciever and speakers..Then the sub....It goes on and on.
-
my pc has a 5.1 DD system.. works great for gaming and dvds. sub makes the floor and windows shake wooo..
My tv is just stereo and i\'m using a stereo reciever with 2 120watt speakers.. Which does the job. In all i\'m happy with what i have. Till i get my own place, then things will change...... :bounce2:
-
Tanks LIC...
Thining of Going for a TV Frist that way Both Games and normal TV shows reap the rewards.
So whats better ?
Plasma or Back projection ?
-
Depends on what you want. Plasma still has a lot of issues, price being one of them. You can get a TV like mine for around $2,000, which isn\'t really all that bad for a good RPTV /HD / Widescreen.
-
When building a system you kind of need to judge how long it will take you to build the system.
If you have a lengthy build, I would buy the stereo and speakers first. Speakers don\'t become obsolete and stereos take a long long time.
Then I would go to the TV.
My home theater is weak now, but next house we get will have a dedicated room with clean power. Then I will have a mack daddy setup.
Right now I have:
56" DLP Rear projection.
Yamaha receiver. 100/channel This is 6 years old and ready for a change. Although it\'s hard to justify until I get new speakers.
Infinity speakers. Not sure of the model number. I don\'t really like them. They were bad ass in the day, but they are about 15 years old.
Boston Accoustics Subwoofer. 1000 watt little booger will shake the neighbor\'s plants.
High Definition OTA receiver (Samsung)
High Definition Direct TV/OTA receiver (RCA)
Ultimate TV (Just like the Tivo, only better (I think))
Soon to be getting HDTiVo.. FINALLY!!!!
DVD player is pretty crappy. It\'s one from when they first came out. I am waiting on the D3.
New leather sectional and a very commfy new leather recliner.. :thepimp:
I also have a front projection CRT unit that is sitting in storage. Looked fantastic before I took it down. My house just isn\'t designed for it and I didn\'t like it sitting in the midle of the room. Next house will be built for it. I had it at 110" screen. Very nice. I may sell it to spudz for $5995 if I ever get the check in the mail.
-
-61" RCA HDTV built in receiver
-I have polkaudio surround sound, not that great.
-Toshiba DVD player, kinda old but its pretty good.
-An Onkyo AV Receiver TX-DS494
-Nice leather sectional
I need to get TiVo and maybe some better surround sound, I was thinking about doing the movie poster thing too.
-
yeah
I heard speakers don\'t become obsolete or do their prices changes much (it means they rarely drop in price) while tvs usually drop in prices as time go by and the performance and features of the tvs go up.
Say like in 2000, a sony 20" flatscreen analog will cost you $350. And it have only two composite video inputs. Now you can get the 21" For $200 with S-video and Component video input.
Same thing with HDTV, back then (1999), a 34" widescreen tube hdtv cost $4,000 - $8000, and it have no hd tuner, no DVI, and only 1 component hd video.
Now you can get 34" for $2,000 and less with DVI, and two component hd videos. and the hd tuner have drop in prices too. You can get a good one for $400.
But if you wait, you get better tv and cheaper too as it becomes more available, popular, and mass produce.
what other things you can expect on hdtv in the upcoming years:
-hdmi will replaces dvi
-thanks to hdmi enormous bandwidth, some manufacturerer will go the extra mile and implement 1080p hdtv. then tv can actually do 1080p (progressively instead of 1080i) either from hd dvd player or from the tv. Imagine playing video games in 1080p.
So, if you have an analog tv big screen or something, i say save your money and spend it on a good speakers and wait for like 6 months or 1 year and see how hdtv have improve an maybe decrease in price. Unless your tv died on you like mine is or you are rich, i wouldn\'t spent money on hdtv yet.
-
And here\'s my hometheater setup:
Sony 34" HS510 HDTV
-yamaha 5.1 ch receiver
-yamaha rear and center speakers
-pioneer front speakers (these speakers ain\'t good, need to replace it)
-panasonic rp-62 dvd player progressive scan.
-panasonic vhs vcr.

I think if its Plasma it will be flat and verrryyy expensive, not 100% sure though.
I am gonna start one towards the end of summer when i finally get a job =].
Where is a good site to look for examples etc?

http://www.avsforums.com
http://www.hometheaterspot.com
http://www.dvdtalk.com
http://www.hometheater.com
The list goes on and on.

Well, I re-arranged my room, moved the TV to a different wall, that way I can get a couch ....Moved the desk, got rid of my DVD Shelves (went to BINDERS instead). It\'s taken me hours upon hours to get everything hooked back up and runnin\'...Argh.
It\'ll be worth it though, as I am goin\' to get a couch tommorw.

Here\'s my lame-ass home theater. I have other things to pour my money into now. :(

the look of the tv looks like the picture aka contrast is set to 100? If so, i suggest you to turn down the contrast to about 50 if you haven\'t done so and turn up the brightness to 70...contrast that clipped (too high) will make it easier for screen burn in and reduce detail that clipped into white. Not to mention it decrease the lifespan o f your tv.

Good suggestion for others. In this case, it\'s not necessary for my television. It only looks like that because the photograph was a time exposure in a poorly lit room at night. The contrast adjustment was the first thing I did when I purchased the television. Also, it has been professionally calibrated.

wow, Coredweller knows his stuff...oh well, i should of voted for you. Sorry i didn\'t...i did a mini minnie moe and just pick out Kurt Angle...
-
My setup is ... underwhelming. But it\'s ok for my non-existant budget at the time. Now I could upgrade to something better, but I don\'t really have the space to do it.

you don\'t need to worry about that sort of thing Sam...
You get into Theaters FOR FEE ;)
-
Might get one now when I\'ve bought my DivX/Xvid compatible DVD Playah.
But right now, I dont think these systems are worth the money.. I\'ll just settle for 2 speakers and a subby for now. :)
-
Oh shit, now we\'re posting pics. I guess I have to take the digital camera home today. I certainly don\'t want Cored showing my ass up... ;)
-
Mine is ok...
Sony 46 inch KP46WT510 Widescreen HDTV
Sony Home Theater Dream System with a 5 Disc DVD 5 satellite speakers - 600watts.
DirecTV Tivo Receiver

:sconf:

I don\'t have that up any more. That projector is the one I am selling to spudz... ;)
Actually it is in storage.
That TV on the right blew up the week after I bought my Sammy.
I don\'t have a digital camera, so I am stuck with my video camera. It sucks, but get over it.
-
^^^
Did you squeeze that from 720 x 480 to 640 x 480?
Hmmm...nothing, i like its being squeeze to 720 x 540, that way you won\'t throw out of resolution and still keep the 4:3 aspect ratio for picture.
-
I didn\'t do anything to it. It\'s just a still frame from my video camera. Stupid little worthless 1 megapixel still from my little sony camera. I dunno if it\'s off. It looks normal though. I don\'t think the stills in my minidv are 720x486 native and squished. I think it just takes them at 640x480. I never paid attention to it since I never take stills with the thing. They are awful.
I am working on getting a digital camera soon. Our bills are fini next month, then I cna hopefully get a camera.
Although I think 8 megapixels will be stellar this summer. Wil probably wait till then.
-
vid,
oh, if you take digital still off the video camera, my guess your camera have a memory card (stick). Then i think its just capture it at 640 x 480. I do own a digital video camera, but it doesn\'t have a memory card. How big is your digital camera CCD?
The bigger, the better. Mine is 1/4" CCD. It suck they don\'t make any bigger CCD under $1,000. I wanted like 1/3" CCD at like $500. That would be so cool.
If you plan on buying digital camera, check out Canon Rebel...I think Adan or somebody talks about it.
-
I just recently calibrated my via Avia, now I\'m waiting for the break in time to be up and find myself an ISF calibrator.
Also, I traded Capcom for his old 5.1 receiver, sounds great. Just need to get a new sub now!
Got my couch...speaker stands..etc.
Was a busy week.
-
Are you going to give us a picture of your shaggin\' setup?
-
I dunno about the camera yet. I am interested in the Nikon now because I already have a nikon lens. We\'ll see. I am going to wait until the 8\'s come out and either get an 8 or see how far the 6s drop.
-
The Canon Rebl is about $900 with the body and additional $100 with the len. You may get it cheaper. This camera have 6 mpixels and its CMOS is bigger than any CCD i know.
Believe me man, Canon are known for their lens and great image sensor (ie, ccd and cmos). But it up to your taste actually. I am no professional camera either.
-
Since spudz mention it,
here is my picture of my home theater. I am trying to make some money and replace the front speakers with Paradigm monitor 9s...
-
damn, can\'t post pic on above reply...
