Title: Bought a new monitor today
Post by: FatalXception on February 28, 2004, 04:03:08 PM
Heh, got a Samsung 192N (http://www.samsung.com/au/products/monitors/tft/192n.asp) flat monitor.  I was a bit wary of buying a LCD, because I am an avid gamer, but I\'ve been putting this baby through startup paces all afternoon, and it looks great.  Even in the highest motion FPS games (and mostly I play slower RTS and RPG games) there is hardly any ghosting or blur at all.  Nice quick response time, and it sure looks crispy in the dark :p

I think that unless I notice something that I\'m not noticing now with my games, I\'m going to keep this baby.  Man it\'s sweet!

Don\'t fixed pixel displays look like poop though if you don\'t have them at their native rez?

I\'ll check it out, but it\'s native res is 1280x1024 which is what I run 99% of my stuff in.

Lets see.... hmm...
I think diablo 2 is the only game I play once in a while that isn\'t able to be set higher than 800x600.

*EDIT*

Well, diablo II looks fine.  If anything, on this size monitor, it\'s 800x600 old-school graphics really show their flaws.  Tried lowering the resolution, checking out pictures and movies, but I don\'t really see much of a difference from seeing them at high res (like, looking at an 1280x1024 pic in 800x600 will look fine).

I like this monitor a lot more than my NEC FP950.

Yea if you care about image quality in games or do photo editing scaling in LCD monitors is crappy.

Check out the UT2k4 demo, I hate playing it on my LCD but I need the space. ;)

That\'s a helluva display btw, glad you like it.

I\'ve tried some other FPSs so far, and the problems that people complain about don\'t really bother me...  I can see what they mean about texture detail while you\'re moving... but at the same time, I\'m not usually looking at textures up close when I\'m running around in an FPS...

Playing stuff other than FPS there are no problems at all....  Starcraft is fine, so is WOW, and dungeon siege.

5 minutes of playing and I wasn\'t noticing anything anymore.

I\'ll try 2004 tomorow I think.

I sure wish I could afford two of these... with their tiny outside border/frame, it would look amazing to set up a dual setup for gaming :p
Oh well.

Yeah, that\'s a very nice monitor.  I already warned my wife that my next computer will be a much higher end one.  I need to get two monitors.  I try and edit and stuff on this thing and it\'s awful.  No freaking room.

Question: How much did it cost? I am going to buy an LCD soon and also mount it on an arm like THX did for his HT (same reason). The arm is going to cost around $200 , so I\'m curious as to what the price of that monitor was also and if you\'d recommend it (I don\'t do computer games / graphic video editing).

I would definitely reccomend this monitor.  I\'m loving it, it\'s waaaaay nicer than my Nec FP (which was a really high end CRT).

It was about 1000 CDN with tax (so 650 USD approx).  I bought a 200 CDN (with tax) in-store warranty, so 3 light or dark dead pixels = automatic replacement with technology of the time within the next five years (also covers any elecronics problems, power surge, etc. etc.).  The standard warranty on good LCDs is 3 years for electronics/defects (limited, of course), and with samsung (varies with every company) .0003% dead pixels = replacement, which is 13 dead pixels.

If that\'s too much, look at the 17" LCDs... because they actually measure the real image size on these (unlike CRTs), this 19" seems like it\'s waaaaay bigger (and it is) than my 19" CRT, so a 17" LCD will still look big, and a thin border model really helps that.  Keep in mind that 17" LCDs will probably be running at 1024x768, and you will want to stick to the native resolution for best results....

I still hate the fact that you have to have so many dead pixels to be able to reutrn an LCD.  Did yours have any?

ive been moaning at Samsung to upgrade my SyncMaster 151s as it makes a bloody annoying whining sound when u lower the brightness on it, they\'ve replaced it 4 times - they all have the same fault - could it possibly be they have all come off a faulty production line!

Well now i have to take it back to the place i bought it and be without for a week - Samung are a freaking joke

I\'ve got the Syncmaster 753DFX and i don\'t get any problems what so ever. After 4 times i\'m pretty sure you can ask for your money back.  Here in aus you can anyway, 1 first time replacement, 2nd time money back. I\'d just ask them if you can return it, get a better monitor  and pay the difference.

Samsung is Korean what did you expect?  Koreans whine a lot by nature, it\'s in their blood.

I think that\'s kinda biased, but in my opinion, i think Japenese electronic are usually better than Chinese and Korean.  Although they usually do cost a little more than Chinese and Korean, but are definately worth the extra $$.
