Title: IDE HD connection
Post by: soundifound on March 03, 2004, 07:22:15 PM
i was told that if i have my 2 hdd\'s on separate channels that they will run faster, better seeking time, etc.  i\'ve got a dvd-rom and a cd-rw drive also.  should i make the HD with the OS on it the primary master, the dvd-rom the primary slave, the second HDD the secondary master, the cd-rw the secondary slave?  is that the most efficient connection possible?

In theory yes, but that\'s if you run the HD\'s at the same time.  Few do.  Best way:

1st Channel:
Master: HD 1
Slave: DVD-ROM

2nd Channel:
Master: HD 2
Slave: CD-RW

It used to be the ATA bandwidth would default to the slowest device\'s speed but I\'m pretty sure WinXP and the current mobos don\'t do that.

Just put the devices you use at the same time on different channels and you\'ll be good.
