Ok, I\'m a complete idiot so bear with me.
I recently purchased an iPod mini which requires a USB 2.0 port, and I\'m not 100% sure if I have one.
I bought a Dell in April of 2002, it has 4 USB ports, but does not specify if they are 1.1 or 2.0, now, if there is a way I can check this that would be great. My iPod is charging and will be for the next 3 hours, so I figure if I don\'t have one I can buy a USB 2.0 card on my way out and when I get home install it.
Basically what I need from you guys is a way to check to see if my USB port is 1.1 or 2.0. Thanks a bunch!

click on Start
Go to Settings
Go to Control Panels
Go to System
Cick on Hardware Tab
Go to Device Manager
and Click on Universal Bus Controller
and see if it say USB 2 Root Hub

Just try transferring a few files and you\'ll notice instantly if it\'s usb 1.1 or 2.0. If it\'s slow as poop it\'s 1.1.
Seriously usb1.1 is so slow it\'s ridiculous.

I\'ll see your USB 1.1 and raise you a serial port. In fact, I\'ll see your USB 1.1, and raise you an LPT1 port.

usb 1 is 12 mb/sec
usb 2 is 480 mb/sec
i think...ask me again before a couple beers, not after

MM got that right.
Just for fun.
Firewire is 400 Mbytes/sec. It way faster than USB 1 and ain\'t far behind USB 2. Considering Firewire have been out since 1995?
Firewire 2 is 800 MBytes. It out like a year already. I not sure if there is stuff that need that much bandwidth. But its cool to know its exist.

Wow, you know a lot about computers Paul2

^^^
I don\'t think i know that much, but enough to know how to use and take advantage of it, part it have to thanks to my uncle who is works in a computer field. But thanks for the compliment.
-
err paul.. its mbits not bytes... 8bits per byte...
800 / 8 = 100 Mbytes a sec.. not 800.
Also it\'s MAX transfer rate. So you\'ll be lucky to even reach it.
Start paying attention to your uncle ;)

Yeah, i realize i put it wrong...damn you are ahead of me correcting it.
Correction:
400 mbits for firewire
and 800 mbits for firewire 2
oh, just for fun. Here are two other connections that are use mainly for video connection:
DVI - 1.65 Gbits or 1650 megabits
HDMI - 5 Gbits or 5,000 Megabits...
I could only imagine PS3 with HDMI connection, imagine playing videogames running at 1080p @ 60 frames per second.

A few posts ago you was asking how to defragment a HD , now you are trying to quote FW and USB specs.
Very odd.
Odd, indeed.
With that said, I would almost gurantee that the computer in question has USB 2.0 - see\'ing as it was manufactored in 2002.

hey the doods learning.. let him gloat.. Its good for the ego. :)
