Title: Nhl
Post by: videoholic on March 11, 2004, 10:34:45 AM
OK, now that it\'s getting close to playoffs it\'s time to drum up interest in the NHL.  Heck, we haven\'t had a sticky either so that\'s always good.

Quick question.  Do people in other areas of the country even realize how freaking good the Lightning are playing?  You look on national websites and you don\'t get shit for coverage on the Lightning, yet they have the best record in the league.

They have a deal now, buy 6 tickets and get two playoff tickets for free.  So tempted to do it, but that\'s 600 bucks for my wife and I...  Damn it would rock though.  Oh well.  I have Big Log to deal with anyway.

Honestly, I had no idea how well the lightning were doing.  My friend I talk about hockey with was just like...how the hell are the Lightning in first in all of the NHL and I was just like...wait...what...how?  That\'s prolly just because I haven\'t been following hockey closely.  The Rangers are too depressing.  Oh well.  In the playoffs, go any Canadian team.  If that doesn\'t work out, go anyone who isn\'t the Devils.

That is how I got to see the Stanley Cup in Philly back in the mid 80\'s.  Dad had a 12 game plan and we were offered tickets to the playoffs and he bought the Stanley Cup Finals ones betting Philly would go the the Cup and sure enough they did.  Didn\'t matter to me though as I was an Edmonton fan at the time. ;)  Nothing like being in the old Spectrum wearing a Gretzky jersey.

I think the Lightning will fold in the post season - just a hunch.  I am surprised no one has talked about the Bertuzzi incident and the ruling.

Funny how Marty McSorley taps a guy with his stick and he is suspended for a year.  Bertuzzi gets away with 17 games...

McSorley - untalented goon
Bertuzzi - All Star goon

I would bet if Bertuzzi didn\'t put the numbers he does he would have been gone for a lot longer - if not indefinitely.

I am disappointed the Thrashers won\'t be going - they had such high hopes before Heatley\'s accident.  I went to the Thrashers/Rangers game two Sundays ago and had club seats - gotta love being waited on.

Actually it is being reviewed and Bertuzzi may be suspended next year as well.
http://www.nhl.com/onthefly/news/2004/03/206088.html

"No final determination on the total duration of Mr. Bertuzzi\'s suspension has yet been made," Mr. Campbell said. "Mr. Bertuzzi will be required to meet with Commissioner Bettman prior to the start of training camp for the 2004-05 season, at which point Mr. Bertuzzi\'s eligibility will be reviewed in light of all the available facts at that time, including Mr. Moore\'s physical status and the progression of his recovery."

And even last year the Lightning went on to the second round.  They are a great team.  I went to the Devils game last weekend and it rocked.  We were down 2-1 and with the goalie pulled we scored to tie it up with 9 seconds left.  We then won 2 minutes into OT.  Friggen awesome.

We took Logan and he absolutely loved it.

I don\'t know I just can\'t see Tampa going to the Cup - This is like deja vu withe the Hurricanes 2 years ago.  Besides the regular season means nothing as long as you make the playoffs.

I have been taking Ethan to games since he was 6 months old - he is so used to everything now and when we went to the Rangers game it was kids day and he got a free jersey.  It was hilarious since it is huge, but I put him in it anyway.

As for Bertuzzi - I bet he is back at the beginning of next year if Moore is doing fine.

Of course it was premeditated, but you can be sure he didn\'t mean to break the dude\'s neck.

I didn\'t see the press conference, but I certainly can\'t imagine the dude isn\'t feeling a ton of regret.

I guess you all don\'t watch much hockey - Bertuzzi isn\'t the nicest guy around.  His Academy Award performance during the interview I am sure influenced some of those that judged him.  "Steve, I didn\'t mean to hurt you."  Sure he didn\'t.

Also when Moore was lying on the ice in his own blood - Tony Granato (the Avalanche coach) was yelling at the Vancouver bench and the camera had a close up one of the Vancouver coaches smirking over the incident.

Post by: videoholic on March 11, 2004, 11:43:38 AM
They didn\'t know the dude broke his neck though dide they?  I mean it looked like a bloody nose.  Although he was a little motionless.

Dude busted his nose hard core on the ice at the game I was at last week.  Damn blood looks nasty on the ice.
Title: NHL Playoffs... The not so sticky....
Post by: GigaShadow on March 11, 2004, 11:50:23 AM
When a guy is lying motionless on the ice you don\'t smirk.  Sorry... but it seems everyone else in the arena knew something was terribly wrong.

Anyway, I remember being at a preseason Ranger/Philly game that turned into wrestlemania.  Hell even the the two goaltenders got into it... and the blood was everywhere - you know its a bitter rivalry when the bench clears in a meaningless pre season game.

Settle down Giga... yes bertuzzi meant to  punch moore in the face... but that isnt exactly considered an injury in the NHL...

Moore fractured his neck when he hit the ice... Bertuzzi didnt intend to injure him that way... so thats what he meant when he says he had no intent to  injure.

And shame on you for thinking his press conference was an act... Im sure if you were responsible for the possible end of another mans career you would be a slight bit emotional....

First of all, it wasn\'t just a punch.  A punch is one thing.  This was a punch from behind, totally blindsiding the guy, during play.  And yeah he was injured when he hit the ice...Bertuzzi drove him into the ice.

Bertuzzi did not mean to hurt the guy as badly as he did, no.  But he meant to hurt him.  And the fact is, he went about it in a dirty, cowardly way.  You want retaliation, you fight a guy fairly.  You don\'t punch him from behind and drive him into the ice.  There is no place for that in hockey.  Bertuzzi deserved what he got and more.

From the front angle, the Bertuzzi hit looks bad, but it looks like he fell on him as he went down.  From the side angle it looks like he drove Moore down hard into the ice, with his arms.

I tend to lean a bit towards the second hypothesis, and as such I had no problem with his suspension (even though it means a Canadian team will be hurt bad in the playoffs).  I think they\'re going to keep Bert suspended next season if Moore isn\'t recovered by then, up to 1 year (sort of bringing in the OHL version of the rule).

I think the sens have a good chance this year, assuming Lalime or Prusek can step it up a notch.

Toronto has a chance, assuming Belfour can stay healthy for the duration.

Calgary, Tampa Bay, Philly, or Colerado all have a shot, assuming they keep playing like they have been recently.

I don\'t think Detroit will make it too far, I have a feeling that they\'re going to run out of gas soon.

Other than that, well.. the rest of the contenders don\'t stand out either way for me.

I want to buy tickets, but I would need to take Logan with me.
Tickets are 100 bucks a piece though so I don\'t really want to buy a ticket for him if I don\'t have to.

It is a complete understatement if I tell you guys Logan loves hockey.

Boy... as soon as that first goal got in on Belfour... the flood gates opened up... 4 to 1 sens!  Man I hope we can end this with a W in 6, cause goin\' to 7 will be mighty stressfull.

I think Ottawa is the best bet for Canada bringing home the cup, second Vancouver.... I still think detroit doesn\'t have the stamina to see things through to the end.

I\'m not cocky.  Just can\'t believe not a single source thinks they have a shot.

BTW, Lightning tied the game 3-3 with 9 seconds left in the 3rd period.  Then smoked their asses one minute into OT.

Looks like it may be a sweep.  Hopefully they will lose Friday so they can win the series here in Tampa.

Although it\'s awesome listening to the change in the crowd.  Freaking awesome.

Oh, and btw, Lightning swept Philly in the regular season.

And it\'s not like he even needed the hat trick.  They were smoking them.

Huge night for Hockey tonight.

Both Detroit and Colorado face Elimination Game 6\'s tonight. The Red Wings will be without Steve Yzerman, I can only assume, due to getting hit in the eye with a puck. They lost Game 5 1-0 at home, and now have to force a Game 7, and have to force it in Calgary. Not so good.

As for Colorado, they\'re in much better shape, simply because they have the confidence, and the fact that in the last two games, the plays are being made by Sakic, Selanne, and of course, Forsberg. It\'s huge for those guys to get hot, especially with Aebischer playing the way he is. If Colorado wins Game 6 tonight at home, I think they\'re goona take Game 7. More power to them...the Sharks are finding ways to lose games.

See Yuz.

Cujo was great, something I didn\'t think I\'d be saying. But, it\'s hard to win when you DON\'T ****ING SCORE. Jeez. No Goals in the last two games, both 1-0 losses. Seriously, if the best offense in the game can\'t score goals against the Flames, you don\'t deserve to win.

Yeah, this round I predict Tampa Bay over Philly in 5.

For the Flames and Sharks... well, battle of the Goalies.  Man, the Sharks must be really kicking themselves for trading Kiprusoff now... and if they loose, it\'ll be even worse.  No doubt in my mind that the Sharks are the better team, and both Goalies are the key players, but I think that if Kiprusoff keeps up his game, and gives the Flames a chance they\'ll win it for him... but the Flames won\'t be able to win the series without great goaltending every game.  For Nabokov, I think he could win the series for the Sharks, but even if he doesn\'t bring his A game every night, the Sharks could pull it out.
I doubt Kiprusoff will be able to maintain for the whole series... prediction?  Sharks in 6.
:hat: (Hope I\'m wrong tho, I\'d like to see a Canadian team in the Cup) :hat:

Oh and...

Yeah...I think they got rid of those streak things. Apparently they either cost too much, or they didn\'t help, something like that :-P

I\'ve honestly never had any trouble with that, of course, since I\'m a Red Wings fan, it seems like everyone else\'s hockey is really sloppy :-P

Yeah, they got rid of them eventually in the US.  They put them up in a CBC hockey night in Canada game ONCE, and there was such a flood of outrage that we didn\'t have to wait for them to realize they were stupid.  We told \'em.

Do they still do that?  I thought they did that for like one year and killed it.

Plus, I watch it in HD.  Not at all hard to follow the puck in HD.

Tampa Bay has 4 of the top 4 +/- goal scorers.

Even though the Western Conference Finals seem like a crapshoot, is anybody else paying attention to them?

Calgary goes into San Jose and takes the first two games, and Game two in relatively convincing fashion? Either San Jose thought they were goona walk over the team that took out Vancouver and Detroit, or Kiprousoff is just THAT good. Calgary up 2-0 going into Game 3 at home. Here\'s to a sweep, and a Calgary vs. Tampa Final...I realize now that I will forever hate all Philly teams in everything.

Just drove by the Ice Palace.  People are camped out all over the place for tickets.

Damn I want to go.  I know people don\'t give a shit about Tampa hockey, but our team is definitely better than Philly\'s..

ABC is cringing though.   2 very non glamorous teams potentially playing in the finals can\'t possibly do much for ratings in an already dismally rated sport.

Tampa should have won game 6 in Philly.  THat was ridiculous how they sat on their ass from the middle of period 2 all the way to the closing seconds when they tied it up.

Luckily they learned their lesson and played the freaking whole game Saturday night.

Finally people are realizing we have a team in Tampa.

Nah they are a one Cup wonder.  Sure they had a good team this year, but there many more teams with more money to lure their players away.

No one on TB except for Andreychuck is a HOF\'er and even then his best years were 15 to 20 years ago.  Not only that TB fans are homers, but then again what can you expect from a hockey franchise in Florida?

Exciting hockey ended in the late 80\'s when Edmonton dismantled.
Title: NHL Playoffs... The not so sticky....
Post by: videoholic on May 24, 2004, 09:53:51 AM
Homers?  You do realize that the people in Tampa mostly come from up north and aren\'t even Tampa fans, right?  OK, just making sure.

And by the way, Tampa was good last year too.

They were OK - they lost in the 2nd round, but like I said I see the Lightning losing players in the off season just like they did Prospal their leading scorer last season.

TAMPA IN 5, BABY!

I think their only stumbling block w/ Philly was philly\'s size. Calgary is a great team, but Rhett Warrener is a pussy, and Iginla is a one-trick pony. This is a hockey fan\'s series, two low-salary teams battling it out... Should be fun.

Sounds kinda like the World Series last year. The Difference between Marlins/Yankees and Cubs/Yankees would have been huge marketingwise. Hell, I think the Cubs woulda taken that series, anyway.

Iginla as a One-Trick Pony? The kid\'s one of, if not THE best player in the NHL. On a bad Calgary team last year, he was the best scorer in the NHL. Now, he\'s coming up with big goals in crucial situations, and that\'s all you can ask for from a star.

Even so, Tampa in 6. They\'re so much better than Calgary, but then again, The Devils were supposed to be "that much" better than Anaheim was last year...and that went to 7 games.

I have to agree with Chizzy, Iginila has only proved himself once.  St. Louis won\'t win the Ross again.  Nothing against him or the team, but he won it with less than 100 pts this year.  I am not impressed.  Iginila tied for the Richard Trophy with 41 goals... not even a 50 goal scorer this year - and the NHL wonders why it has no ratings.

Flames are a better road team than a home team (9-2 in the playoffs on the road this year). If the Flames take Game 2, and the Lightning played like they did in Game 1, it\'s goona be a very short Stanley Cup Finals.

You\'re the one that said Lightning in 5. Look how that worked out.

Flames take Game 7 and get the Stanley Cup as far away from Florida as possible. Jerome Iginla scores the game winner midway through the 3rd period, and Martin Gelinas adds an empty netter in the final minute, Flames win 3-1.

Series MVP - Jerome Iginla
Playoffs MVP - Martin Gelinas

Kiprousoff for a 2nd round pick...that\'s the best trade in the past 10 years.

Too bad you don\'t watch Baseball. I\'ve already had 2 years with good ol\' Erin by watchin\' Braves baseball in TBS.

Another Florida sports team wins a title -- nobody cares. As much as you want us to, it\'s simply not going to happen. Nobody cared when the Marlins won their 2nd World title, and nobody cares that the Lightning just won their first.

Is there anybody else that just naturally hates all Florida teams, or is that just me? :-P

Well, Mr. Vid, it would have been anticlimatic had your team decided not to make it worth watching in the final 10 minutes of the game. Really wanted to see them choke. Would have made this post that much sweeter, but oh well.

It wasn\'t over the line.  THe tv angle that got that shot was at an angle to it and since the puck was a couple inches in the air it just looked like it was over the line.  I haven\'t seen anyone give any kind of proof to the contrary.

I don\'t know why anyone could rag on Florida Sports for anything.

Why do people just assume that because we have a beach that we can\'t comprehend, much less be good and support, a game like hockey.

Check the attendance records.  I\'m willing to bet that we hold at least the top spot for single game attendance and maybe even the top 5-10 spots.

The attendance at hockey games all year have been great.  I know the games I went to were packed.

No worries.  It\'s ok to be like most others and just assume Florida sucks.  It certainly worked when everyone underestimated the Bucs two years ago.

The Lightning haven\'t been THAT successful when it comes to NHL attendance...

AVERAGE ATTENDANCE          2000-01 2001-02 2002-03

National Hockey League       16549    16486      16591

Tampa Bay Lightning            14907    15366      16545

an avg of 16,545 in an arena that can hold over 27000 in 2002/03?  That is below the league avg as you can see.  The games that they do sell out are due to the other team that is visiting - ie. Detroit, Colorado, etc... That is how it is everywhere there is a weak market.  Colorado, I believe has the record for consecutive sold out home games.
