Title: What if...?!
Post by: Ryu on March 11, 2004, 07:32:41 PM
If you could travel through time, would you go into the future or the past?  When specifically and why?  I\'ll post my answer later.  Just was curious about your guys\' responses.

I\'d like to go to the past, as much as people would like to see the future I\'d rather see the past and find out what truely happened in history, there are so many unknowns it\'d be fulfilling to know the truth of everything.

into the past, because I can remember who won every pivotal sporting event for the past 20 years.

Into the future.  If I went to the past, and could go where ever I wanted in the past, I wouldn\'t trust myself.  There are too many things in the past that I would be too tempted to change, and who knows how that might affect the present.

go into past to make lots of money....

Become a rock star becuase I would write songs like stairway to heaven and master of puppets when they havn\'t been written yet.

Go to the past and prevent those events that affect my life.  So I won\'t have schizophrenia, sinus problem, if only i give myself self respect and not careless.  I didn\'t know as i grow up, things would be hard and suicidal.  I want to prevent those bad lucks...

I\'d want to go to the future and see what the next big thing will be and come back to the present and make it into a cash cow.  :)

I\'d like try the times of WWII, that is if it was a free pass.  Travel to see all the beauty of Europe, and just experience the war first hand.  You don\'t play all those video games without wondering what it would have been like first hand.

If it was more of a trip for good, then I don\'t know.  So many great choices in the past, and so much to know about the future.

Future.. life presently sucks and is generally hard for the common person to support him/herself.

I\'m hoping in the future we won\'t have to work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.  Maybe to a time when everyone enjoys what they do (maybe just a fantasy).

That would be one of my dreams too.  People enjoying their lives more and less on work.  The less work hour and day there, the better.

^^^^^^

I\'d want to go to a stage in history or future history where all our needs are catered for in a socialist utopia and the main thing to do is better ourselves and the rest of humanity. And my way to do that is to explore strange new worlds and boldly go where no one has gone before in a fancy starship. :)

THose of you who are saying you\'d go into the future, you know RYU never said you were coming back.  He only said you were going...

So therefore you would be a fool to not go into the past.  Shit, go back 10 years and invest 20 grand in AOL....  Don\'t forget to Dump it though in 2000...

Vid is right.  I meant if you were to go to stay -- a one way trip.  I imagine it would be much easier to live in the past then in the present, but living in the future... who knows?  The possibilities for human advancement are always there, but we as a species have teetered on the edge of extinction for thousands of years.  Who knows what 10, 20, or 30 years could do.

I would probably go to Ancient Egypt at its height. I\'ve always thought Egypt was the most fascinating society in history and that there are so many things we don\'t know about them. Plus I could probably fit into Egyptian Society looks-wise.

Second choices would probably be Ancient Ghana or Mali back when they were the richest nations on earth.

There were no video games back then either! I\'d go to the future, where you could literally just "energize" (like that thing on Star Trek) your turd from your colon straight to the toilet.

Plus, I\'d get to play with Playstation37. :)

Going back would just be too risky. If one could come back to the present, there is no telling what you would find. Even the smallest thing you might change could have a great impact on the present. If you had to stay in the past that would be another story. Bottom line I guess I would like to see the future. See if we come to our senses and finally quit destroying our planet. Only one we got people.

Someone has watched Back to the Future too many times. ;)

I would go into the past, and make the bets on those important sporting events, then invest the money in Microsoft.

For those wanting to use their foreknowledge of the future to abuse the stock market, don\'t. They\'ll get suspicious and nab you on insider trading somehow. And when they finally force the truth out of you, they\'ll think you\'re crazy and put you in a mental hospital.

Even if I couldn\'t come back I\'d still rather go to the future.  It isn\'t *all* about money to me.  What if I get a life-threatening disease or get bored?  I\'d like to walk down the street without fear of getting mugged and just to live in a friendlier, more social environment where money/looks/social status don\'t matter much. (probably because I don\'t apply to any) :D

Going back into the past would be a too big burden on my conscience in both cases ; with the ability to go back to present or not. I mean, I KNOW about the terrorist stuff and countless wars which happened, I know about mankinds wrongdoings to nature and animals etc. ; and I also know, even with the ability to go back I would not be able to prevent all that sh1t from happening. So it would be too much a psychological burden and stress on one single person.
In movies like Back to the Future they just \'forget\' implications such as these.

There\'s also this twofold motivation problem for going back ; are you going back to better the world for everybody and everything ?

OR...

are you going back just to benifit yourself ?

So...I\'d choose going to the Future. I might see stuff I\'d never imagined possible ; a real "thinking outside of the box" expierence. :bounce: Going to the future also means no selfish benifit becuz all your knowledge will be quite obsolete or out of fashion. In other words ; you\'re gonna begin with a fresh clean slate like a newborn. .........................  Neo !???

Why do so many people assume that the future will be better than now?

Has no one seen Mad Max or the Terminator!?

heh....you\'re forgetting that you already have that choice
since you can choose to go to the past or the future, you already have the ability to (try to) prevent those things from happening. Your choosing to go to the future is therefor as selfish a choice as is going to the past without preventing things like 9/11 :(
Title: What if...?!
Post by: Bozco on March 15, 2004, 10:20:59 AM
Going to the past wouldn\'t help you prevent 9/11 anyway.  You think they\'d believe some joe schmoe over a terrorist attack.  They\'d probably just arrest you.  Anyways, you can\'t stop every bad thing from happening, shit happens.

I\'d like to go to both but still undecided. Instead, I\'ll post where I\'d go in the past and future

past: Medieval England- I don\'t know. I\'m very interested in medieval history and would like to be a knight or something. It would be sweet.
Roman Times- I\'m interested in Rome and would like to see some Gladiator fights in the Coloseum

Future: Like 200 years in the future and see how far in space we are and see if I can fly some small starfighter. That would be sweet :)

^^Its like when you look at where we were 200 years ago and compare it to today I can\'t even imagine where we will be 200 years from now.

Things that we use today weren\'t even on the radar back then.

Here is a thought;

You travel back to September 9th. You have 2 days to stop what is going to happen in on the 11th.

Doesnt that sound like a movie plot? At least I think it does, how would someone go around to solve something like that? I myself would be clueless.
Title: What if...?!

^^^You wouldn\'t stop it and would probably end up in Guantanamo Bay.
Title: What if...?!
Post by: Ryu on March 16, 2004, 10:05:24 PM
I\'d go back with knowledge of the things that happened on the 9th and 10th, things that prove that I can tell what\'s going to happen.  Closing numbers for some stocks, a tape recapping the events, the flight numbers and the names of the terrorists on the planes since they will be on the passenger list, and knowledge of the sporting events for the 9th and 10th, final scores, swings, misses, whatever that can\'t be easily predicted.

If none of that is possible, if none of it could be brought with me, if I couldn\'t just call up the information on the Internet before I had to leave, I\'d take a plane to the East Coast, buy a handgun, and start distributing justice, even in the airport if I have to.

Then that makes this entired thread all useless now. Close it throw it away because if you can\'t come back then you would upset the space-time continuim and the entire world would end.

Thats what I would do.

But imagine if you got caught calling them in- and everyone is in doubt of how many lives you just saved.
