Title: Attention yahoo users
Post by: Titan on March 13, 2004, 07:18:11 PM
This really should be in the PC and hardware forum but I want all Yahoo mail users to read this. I just got this in my email from administration@yahoo.com. This is what the email said:

Quote
Dear user of Yahoo.com,

Some of our clients complained about the spam (negative e-mail content)
outgoing from your e-mail account. Probably, you have been infected by
a proxy-relay trojan server. In order to keep your computer safe,
follow the instructions.

Pay attention on attached file.

Cheers,
    The Yahoo.com team                 http://www.yahoo.com

It sounded fishy to me (since I haven\'t sent out any emails in a couple weeks) so I did a virus scan of the attachment "Encrypted.pif" (that also made me question it). This is what it said:

Quote
File name:    Encrypted.pif
File type:    application/octet-stream
Scan result:   Virus "W32.Beagle.M@mm" found.
You can not download this attachment.

I\'m just giving everyone a heads up just incase they get this email. I want to report this email but don\'t know how. If someone can tell me, that would be great.

You could spend your life posting warnings about such.   I get a half dozen a day to my public email accounts.

People do spend their life just posting warnings on these things on some sites :p

Thanks tho.

Whats the point of making worms and viruses(virii?)? They don\'t serve any benefit that I am seeing.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

People just like to be a**holes or are just stupid. Just like the question, "Why would anyone commit a crime?"...same reason, more or less. I do it to my friends just to joke around, but they\'re harmless ones.

And I don\'t think "virii" is a word.

At one time, it could be explained off as simply being a way of exposing software vunerabilities to the public. However, we all know the ethical thing would be to find the problems and then contact the company. Of course, with that, there is the argument that the company still won\'t act and fix the problem unless the problem is actually exposed thus causing negative pubilicity on the given company.

With all that said - we could argue that if no one exposes the problem and no one executes the problem, then there would be no reason for any of this. But we all know that is a pipe dream, now don\'t we?

As for "virii" it\'s slang.

No, I didn\'t get it, but I would not put any faith into it either. These Ebay / Yahoo / Paypal scams are dime a dozen.

Crap...

I thought it was real when it came from the usual eBay address and had the logo and all...

But when I submitted it, it said "Bad Referrer...Access Denied...etc etc etc"

Yeah, it was discussed on another forum I visit, and as Titan says, it\'s a scam.
