I don\'t know if everyone else paid attention last week to Naughty Dog co-founder Jason Rubin comments about the game industry.
I thought he made some interesting comments about how these huge publishers don\'t acknowledge the game makers.
The mass majority of consumers have no idea who made the game they just know the publisher.
And majority of the time unless your a big time game maker or a good contract negotiator the publisher end\'s up owning the franchise.
I think he\'s right though if you see a move staring xyz actor your likely going to go see it because you know the guy plays in great movies.
Same should be for game developers. One thing is they don\'t wanna have to pay the game makers more money. It\'s a shame maybe things will change soon.

Let\'s see what the puublisher does:
1) Provides funding to the developers to make the game
2) Gives them the criteria for what type of game it\'s supposed to be
3) Distributes and produces the game worldwide
Unfortunately the game developer, while highly talented, can do none of those by themselves. Middle men are indeed evil, causing prices to rise or just remain where they are. The publishers also set deadlines which cannot be broken or the contract will be broken. From there the developer has to decide if they want to scrap the game and receive ZERO money, or just release a crappy game just to make the deadline and get paid.
You take a company like Capcom which develops and publishes their own games and you start to see lower prices and higher quality, such as $40 for Viewtiful Joe.
Maybe the industry does need a change, but the developers just don\'t have the money or distribution channels to get a game off the ground.

Well, with the emergence of for instance Valve\'s Steam (although crappy at this point in time), P2P distribution from the developers themselves is a great possibility in the future.

Screw the publishers. They dont set the criteria for the games all the time. Thats bull. I think Devs deserve more respect and representation. Just because the Publishers have all the finacial power doesnt mean they made the game what it is. They just got it moving because there are many devs that work on projects and look for Publishers to pick up their games.
Publishers can publish any shitty game. The devs make it what it is.
