I wouldn\'t install it till there is an official release, it can screw the OS if it\'s bugs.

Whats the difference between Service Packs and the Windows updates?

I\'m running the latest sp2 beta and my system is much more stable now than before. And it\'s also has better security. Pop-up blocker for inet explorer. Internet access for programs are now controlled by xp by default, i.e. a dialogue appears asking if you will allow the program to access the internet or block it. It\'s pretty cool if you ask me.

Tried it. Commented on it on in the forums. Was ignored. I am not happy with the beta release at this point. Before you all say that is why it is in beta form. I have used MS beta\'s that were better then the gold release.

Windows updates are for individual updates.
A service pack is pretty much all patches/updates thrown together with extras

Well I\'m pretty amazed that it\'s running so well on my Toshiba craptop, sorry laptop. It\'s been up and running for over a week now. Before I installed SP2 I\'d get a BSOD every 2-3 days.

My computer\'s running ok, and I don\'t have any security concerns, as I take care of that stuff myself.

I would say that unless you have concerns about your systems performance, or you really want some of the features (and don\'t want to go out and get pop-up stopper or something), then wait until it\'s officially released AND gone through a month or so of error reporting.

If you want a pop-up blocker. Get the google toolbar. Unless MS makes serious changes say a new sus update. Then this is going to be a nightmare to deploy. It is going to break more things than it fixes. Unless you are home user of course.

Only reason I installed SP2 was because my system wasn\'t stable and I was planning on re-installing OS anyway. Thought it couldn\'t hurt to try out SP2.

I wouldn\'t recommend installing it on an already stable machine.

/me shudders at the thought of the google toolbar.

Google is one of the worst companies for privacy invasion.  I wouldn\'t trust them with a toolbar if they were the ONLY pop-up stopper out there... and they aren\'t.  Find a small freeware or shareware one... there are plenty out there.  If you get a pre version 3 pop-up stopper from panicware their\'s was great.

Google does not collect any info if you disable the advanced features during setup. MS collects more info than they do.

If you want a browser with built in pop-up blockers use Mozilla or Opera. Very good browsers.

Download some software to see where your packets are going... google toolbars report plenty of information, even with privacy options on.  Microsoft too... you can\'t trust any of those biggies!

If you do not look at kiddie porn sites. Then what is the issue? ;) I will load up my packet sniffer later tonight. It will probably send a shitload to google though. I do use the search engine.

The dealy is that it\'s an invasion of privacy.

The dealy is that they sell usage/website statistics to advertisers who then they to more carefully aim ads at demographics.

The dealy is that it\'s just plain wrong.

You should be carefull about the "well if you have nothing to hide......" arguement.  That\'s the first arguement everyone uses when they try and remove privacy rights from individuals.  It\'s easier to do on the web, and therefore something we have to be more carefull about.

You have nothing to hide, right?  But you would object to the police taking a cursory sweep through your house on a regular basis?  how about a car checkpoint?  Howabout random searches of your person when walking down the street?  Privacy is something that is important in all areas of your life, and shouldn\'t be violated without cause.

google-watch (http://www.google-watch.org/krane.html)

Obviously not all of the issues on this site are related, but read them, and then go back and look at whether or not google is doing things that way still.

If you have their toolbar/cookie, every search you make is logged.

Vid if you are talking about the pirated version. Then yeah probably not. Go ahead and give it a try and let us know how it runs.

I\'m using McAfee security suite...pop-up blocker, firewall, antivirus...everything is there...I hope i can turn off all the SP2 features, otherwise, MS will be in for another lawsuit. :D

You know, it is a sad day when people need to run an anti-virus / firewall / spyware blocker / pop-up blocker all the time , just to surf the \'net.  Fact is, the \'net as it is, is a cesspool. You\'re constantly wondering what you can get, what information is being sent back, how to get past those full-page flash AD\'s and so on. Maybe I am just being overly senimental, but I remember the internet when the worst thing you had to worry about was not opening attachments from strange people and pop-up ads at warez sites.

I remember the internet when it was just a bunch of gov sites and universities.  Those were the days.  It\'s amazing how fast it\'s been corrupted... the internet is truly growing faster than anything else we\'ve ever had.

You can turn off the firewall. If you have xp you already have the firewall, and if mem serves me right. You have to enable the pop-up blocker. Overall. I am not sure why everyone thinks this is the cureall for windows xp. Heck at this point. I would not be suprised if they dropped some of these great cure-alls and left it for xp reloaded.

That\'s true and it is growing for the worst. It\'s become a place where its nothing but pay-sites and very little is actually educational or informative. Instead, you find yourself wasting time going through hundreds of sites, just for one bit of information and when you get to it you are likely asked to pay, register or put up with a huge flash AD  / pop up ad.

You trust Xps firewall.   I\'d disable it and use something else if i were you. :)

DO tell. Is there anyway to block google from tracking your search?

Google watch has a Google Proxy search:

Search without tracing (http://www.google-watch.org/cgi-bin/proxy.htm)

If you want to use advanced search, you can bypass the page that requires you to get the cookie - go directly to:

Google Advanced Search (http://www.google.ca/advanced_search?hl=en)

Make sure you have their cookies blocked, and delete any cookies you have of theirs.  Now you can use their search, and they can\'t keep track of the search....  Keep track of this, if they ever close the loophole of bypassing the cookie page, we\'ll know they really use it to track us, not just to "save our preferences"
