I\'ve never understood why they all wear those stupid helmets.  Is that an FIA rule, or does Ferarri just think their pit crew looks cooler in helmets?

By the way, those red suits and red booties really look ghey.  But that\'s just the way I see it.  :p

They wear the helmets to protect against fire. About 10 years ago Jos Verstappens car burst into flames in the pits whist being refuelled. Now they all wear fireproof suits and helmets.

Nobody was seriously hurt btw.

I\'ve heard of many pit fires before.  I still don\'t understand why a full helmet like the ones these guys are wearing is required to protect your head against fire.  Wouldn\'t a nomex sock be good enough?  It seems like overkill to me.

With all those people there, if a huge blaze was to happen, people will run in a straight line when they can\'t see anything. If they hit anything, the helmet protects them. Just look at the pic Kurt Angle posted.

But they\'re more likely to bump into things because they have no peripheral vision due to the helmets...

They can\'t see in the blaze anyway, so why not where a protective head gear?

I guess it would be pretty funny if some Ferrari mechanic couldn\'t see what was next to him because of the helmet, and then knocked over a fuel can and started a fire.

I\'d laugh my ass off if I saw the Ferrari pit go up in flames.  Just kidding.  I\'m sure they have some german-engineered high pressure fire suppression system built into their socks.  :)

I have one of those helmets. In my autocrossing experience, you CAN see a lot. So...your argument is null and void. :p

If those ARE driving helmets, (which I think would be inappropriate for a non-driving application like this) I suspect they are designed to permit a wide left / right field of view.  Naturally it won\'t be as wide as it would with no helmet at all.

I think you can guess that they would also severely limit your up/down vision, since that\'s not really essential for driving.  I would think this would present a danger for the mechanics to trip over things in certain situations.  That\'s why I\'m saying these helmets are overkill.

Also, why do they have any kind of lower face protection at all?  Isn\'t that mainly to protect against high energy impacts?  Seems unnecessary for a worker on foot.  If they want to wear helmets, I think a half helmet would be sufficient.  Of course those look dorky, so Ferrari has to make all their mechanics look like drivers.... ?

Before Hulk smashes, ... this will be my last post on this subject.  :D

You don\'t even see professional firefighters wearing full face helmets like these.  Maybe Ferarri should invest in the following head protection instead:

That\'s coz fire fighters don\'t get engulfed in flames by accident! And when they do, whey were a full mask.

Nobody was seriously hurt btw.

I remember that, it was at Hockenheim in 94. Noone was hurt, but there were a few people in the hospitality box above the Benetton pit who came close to being burnt.

I remember after he got out of the car, there was a picture of Verstappen in the pits, washing his face with some bottled water, it looked like his eyebrows had been singed off.

As for the pit crew helmets, yeah. they have to wear them nowadays, for the obvious safety reason. They had to start wearing fireproof overalls in 94 when they reintroduced refuelling, but before that fire, all they had to wea head wise, was a fireproof balaclava (sp?) and goggles.

Those Ferrari helmets aren\'t the same as race helmets, they are not cleared for racing/impact safety use, they are soley designed for retarding the effects that fire has on the human body. They are gay though, McLarens pitcrew helmets are a lot cooler, there are 2 types, 1 that sort of looks like a Darth Vader helmet, and another that is fully chromed, with a full face pull down visor, which is also chromed. Both look pretty smart.
