April 02, 2004 - Digital Extremes, the Canadian developer that\'s worked hand-in-hand with the Epic Games to create versions of Unreal and Unreal Championship on various systems, announced today the development of a new and original game designed specifically for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 2. It\'s called Dark Sector.
The trailer, we\'re told, is not CG, nor is it pre-rendered in any way. According to Digital Extremes, the footage shown here is entirely in-game engine. The new engine is built using potential specs from both future consoles, which are unofficially due sometime in late 2005 or early 2006.
Very little has been revealed about Dark Sector, which is deliberate on Digital Extremes\' part. This trailer is meant as a tech demo entirely designed to impress tech heads, gamers, and potential publishers. We do know it\'s a first-person shooter based in a futuristic, sci-fi setting, and there are guns, lots and lots of guns.

hmm, looks a bit crappy
-
what a misleading topic...
-
well nothing that PS2 or Xbox can\'t do.
-
I sure hope that was just 5% completed
-
Hmmm... i dont know what you guys are all talking about. It doesnt look like anything xbox or ps2 could do. Meh. Maybe im just confused but it doesnt look that bad on the downloaded version. Not to mention that its a first in a million of games to come.
If it is what they say it is then it isnt a bad START.
-
Well, imo it IS a bad start. Everytime new technology arises they fall into the \'pitfall\' with the content being the cliche sci-fi metallic environment and characters.
Imo it would have been better if they had a game with a wide open environment with both complex architecture and trees, bushes and waving grass in it. I wanna see realtime radiosity FX and next gen particles. For example ; the part with the windmill at the water in Ico... if they could have that photo realistic in real time .... or that part in the garden with the wavy trees. My God... mental ray, HDRI lighting is very high on my wishlist for next gen graphics.
But imo the biggest challenge for next gen games will be better AI. Already in this generation of PS2, Xbox and NGC games, alot of the times AI comes off as unconvincing in relation to the \'realistic\' visuals. I think we\'ll all celebrate the day scripted events in games are no longer needed.
-
It\'s just some unknown company who\'s made a silly prediction, ie some demo running on some PC architecture, about how next gen games will look. Who cares anyway, for both MS and Sony\'s sakes I hope next gen will look a lot better, and I\'m sure the next gen will.
I\'d go as far as to say that this has nothing to with the first PS3 game being revealed as it\'s not even running on a PS3 emulator (how could it? seeing as there is no hardware yet for either xbox or ps3).
The whole thing is just silly. Lay it to rest.

heh.You are talking about actual intelligence here. Not artificial inteligence.
So far I ve never heard of some kind of Artificial Inteligence that can make its own conclusions and learn by its own.It only acts according to how it was programmed to in specific events.
-
Stupid video.
Cool graphics. Everyone knows though that ingeneral, graphics improve as the console gets older. Just because they have figured it out more.
GT3 sure is an exception though.
-
What do you mean with "GT3 sure is an exception though."
-
?
how can it NOT be pre-rendered if its done with NEXT-GEN SPECS in mind, which no PC or any other hardware can do in realtime, today?
-
Hmm.
It seems that they\'re looking for some extra hype for their game.
I don\'t have any reason to doubt that they want to put this game on next gen consoles, but what I see here is an unfinished PC game running on actual hw.
It\'s as close to next gen games as Half Life was to this gen.

Aren\'t you being a little optimistic about both PS2 and Xbox\'s capabilities here, Adan?

Actuallly, there is software that "reacts" in a sense. When you see LOTR epic battles, every one of those soliders is based off a program built. The idea behind the program is it renders all those massive soliders and then, lets the programmer customize how they look and then they react to each other. Example being, if one solider goes to hit, the other dodges. Yes, it\'s been done before, but this is on a much more epic scale in every sense. While I doubt we see something like that anytime soon for our games, but there will be something similiar in the next generation - there almost has to be.
