Title: Progress has been made...An update on my PC../.
Post by: Living-In-Clip on April 09, 2004, 09:57:50 PM
As everyone knows, I have started building my PC. I\'ve actually made quite abit of progress...I\'ve picked up in the last two weeks.

ANTEC Performance PLUSVIEW LE

Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS Platinum Pro PCI Sound Card

Come Monday I will also pick up my Plextor 708A drive..

One note is the possible change of heart. After weighing the budget and deciding what I truly will do with this PC, I may not go with duals after all. I truly want duals, but I can cut my budget down by $1500, if I opt for a Athlon 64 3400 instead of the Dual Opteron 244\'s, I had previously hoped for.

I still have to pick up another Seagate 160 Serial ATA HD for my Raid 0 setup, then will pick up two 250 gig drives also....Motherboard, CPU, videocard and monitor. Still a lot to go, but once I\'m done, I\'m confident this system will kick ass.

Souly - Dig the cabling job you\'ve done. I plan on doing some myself.

What happens if u just want to copy a doc file and cart it to another pc. I personally think using Cdrw for that is overboard.  Or if u want to make boot disks for older machines.

usb stick drive :)

Post by: Seed_Of_Evil on April 11, 2004, 07:19:32 AM
Yup I think that the floppy is almost dead. If you dont use a rewritable disc (you can copy 700mb in 4 mins and even less) you may use a stick drive like mm said. I use both systems. The only problem I had was updating the bios (THX ;)) and discovered that it was not needed any more, so i dont need the floppy actually.

muhahah succumb to the pressure.  only n00bs use floppies.

ARE YOU A 31337 OR A N00B

For file to file transfer I do it over the LAN or email it to myself.  Seriously you can mail yourself a file under 1.44mb much quicker than transferring it through slow@$$ floppy.

Post by: §ôµÏG®ïñD on April 11, 2004, 05:38:15 PM
what good will that do when your pc isn\'t running and you need to flash the bios.  You should see how my pcs i\'ve fixed because people use online flash tools or do it from windows command prompt.  They must have been the elite, bringing it to a newbie to fix ;)
Only reason i have it is for bios updates, doc files and boot disks for older comps.  If your machine supports cdboot then you don\'t need one. My machine does but i prefer a floppy simply for bios updates, and it makes my case look more even ;)

you want 31337 talk

I think I am definitely going to build my next computer.  I was looking at Newegg and it\'s just so much cheaper to do a high end computer that way.

My problem is realy the motherboard.  I guess I need to read up on them.  I definitely want to do a 64 bit computer.  I saw that a motherboard, the 64 bit 3400 chip, gig of ram, radeon 9800 vid card and case was like 1100 bucks.  Tack on another hundred for the HD and I\'m done aren\'t I?  I really don\'t even need a HD, but I may just get a fresh one.  Keyboard, mouse, and monitor I already have.  Along with the DVD writer. and an extra cd-writer I could dig up.

Post by: Living-In-Clip on April 13, 2004, 11:40:29 AM
If you are going to build a high-end one, then yeah it is cheaper. Also keep in mind that an AMD is going to run you less than an Intel. Maybe by the time you do it, MS will have a true 64 bit OS out for sell to take advantage of that nice new CPU.

When you do it , check out Newegg.com for Refurbished items. Lot of good deals there.

Newegg + Anandtech F/S forums is the way I\'d go for a new high-end system.  Lotsa people get rid of their 9800 cards for extra cash or from Dell pulls.

Damn people ruining my thread - this thread was for me to gloat and brag about my new items!
:D

With that said - I have picked my motherboard the Chaintech ZNF-150, I wanted to wait for the new Nforce 250 chipset, but they keep getting delayed and early reviews from sites don\'t really talk to pleasant for it.  Will be ordering that another Seagate SATA 160 drive for my RAID 0 setup , come next week.

any os will take advantage of a 64bit cpu..  i won\'t bother goin into details.. only difference is a 64bit os takes advantage directly.  kinda like the difference between a hub and switch etc.
Title: Progress has been made...An update on my PC../.
Post by: Ryu on April 13, 2004, 10:54:53 PM
What he means is that the OS wasn\'t built with a 64-bit cpu in mind and one wont be out until, at the earliest, 2006 that is windows based (with LH being delayed until then and all).  The CPU may take advantage of it, but it\'s still really underutilized regardless.  Games will take full advantage of the 64-bit processor before a windows OS will.

Exactly. While any OS will benefit frm a 64 bit cpu, it isn\'t truly tking advantage of the 64 bit instruction set and so on.

Post by: §ôµÏG®ïñD on April 14, 2004, 05:53:34 PM
One takes advantage directly, the other does not.  Hub sends into to all machines for the response, the switch sends it directly.

With 64bit OS the cpu takes advantage directly without querying the cpu first. The memory pages all have 64 bit addressing space, instead of 2x 32bit chunks like a 32OS would use on a 64bit cpu.
The comparison was a bit vague though..

Just an update, I "finished" it today. I went to town , bought a CPU  / RAM / VIDEOCARD / etc. It isn\'t exactly what I had planned and some things will change, but the basic machine is up and running now. I still need to pick up another 512 megs of RAM and maybe, eventually upgrade the videocard.

What I fail to understand is that you are willing to spend good money on allot of your computer parts, yet you chimp out on one of the most important components to building a pc of that caliber.

YOUR PSU is el cheapo, I will say this for the last time, ENERMAX, ANTEC, Vantec etc.. are all mid line average PSU that are incapable of holding a stable rail that doesn’t fluctuate beyond the 1 percentile, also they are RATED INCORRECLY your antec is not a true 450W PSU. (This is what really pisses me off with these companies they sell there units under false pretenses)

http://www.pcpowerandcooling.com/pdf/Turbo-Cool_510_vs.pdf

take a look at this PSU, the most respected, awarded and quality PSU company in the pc business.

Don\'t listen to him,

Yeah don\'t listen me, after all I am just making this up, that and the general consensus of any well knowledgeable Pc tech knows that what I stated above is accurate. Many top PC techs hands down will always mention PC&C when discussing PSU for the PC. They are the reference PSU, they set the standard’s for which the rest of the companies attempt to try and duplicate, yet fail.

Oh and THX, while the Fortron is a GOOD PSU(much better than the ANtec) it is in no way of the same caliber of a PP&C, fortoron\'s are the second choice for those unable to purchase a PP&C.

I\'ve had a PCPC psu before and it was grrreat, but doesn\'t justify twice the cost of another well rated one imo.  I\'d rather spend the savings on a future-proof video card.

It depends, if you want the most stable overclocks then yes. Also if you want a unit that will last you 5 years and up without giving u any hassle, then I would say it\'s worth every penny. I work part time for a company that manufactures PS (not for PC) and if I have learn one thing there, it\'s that when dealing with hi-tech electronics you always want the cleanest power source available to run through it\'s veins.

u won\'t need a psu for 5 years.. most likely the standard will change and the power requirements. I change my psu on average every 1 to 2 years.  (but always quality units)
