My theory is that amercans\' fascination with having a supercharger projecting through their hood really took off after seeing Mad Max 2.  Genuine muscle car freaks may have been using them for years, but it took a movie like that to make a generation of dimwitted n00bs consider sticking a fake supercharger on the hood of a car that probably has nothing more than a transverse-mounted V6 underneath.  :)
