maybe saddam WAS using chemicals on these spiders! i have never seen spiders this huge!
-
Yea, they say some troops have been finding those in their sleeping bags. Goddamn, spiders freak me out.
-
From snopes.com
According to most spider experts, these claims are all false. Camel spiders (so named because, like camels, they can be found in sandy desert regions) grow to be moderately large (about a 5" leg span), but nowhere near as large as dinner plates; they can move very quickly in comparison to other arthropods (a top speed of maybe 10 MPH), but nothing close 25 MPH; they make no noise; and they capture prey without the use of either venom or anesthetic. Camel spiders rely on speed, stealth, and the (non-venomous) bite of powerful jaws to feed on small prey such as other arthropods (e.g., scorpions, crickets, pillbugs), lizards, and possibly mice or birds. They use only three pairs of legs in running; the frontmost pair (called pedipalpa) is held aloft and used in a similar manner to the antennae of insects. Camel spiders shun the sun and generally hide during the day, coming out at night to do their hunting.
Although whatever is depicted in the photograph above appears to be far too large for camel spiders, the creatures might just look unusually large because they were held close to the camera, creating an illusion of exaggerated size. However, since we don\'t know the source of the picture, we can\'t yet rule out the possibility that some other misdirection was involved (e.g., digital manipulation, a misdescription of what the photograph depicts, some soldiers goofing around with plastic figures or something else spider-shaped, etc.).

Yes, I\'ve already seen that picture, and the scale is deceptive. The object in the upper right corner of the image is the soldier\'s palm and cuff, so that should visually correct the scale for you.
-
All us l337 hax0rZ who visit other forums have already seen the pic & the Snopes article. ;) sowwy
The biggest one (as far as mass goes) I think is the Goliath Birdeater tarantula:

It\'s not that the spider is small and the camera makes it looks big, it\'s just that the camera make it look bigger than it really is. The spider is accually pretty big for a spider, and bigger than most but it\'s not huge.
-
Still would not want that thing in my sleeping bag.....
-
Wow.
I hate spiders.
When Iraq turns into a vacation spot. I\'ll be the first one to bitch about it.

"That\'s no spider that\'s a spoon."
"I see you\'ve played spidey spoony before."
You Aussie\'s are all spoonies and no spidahs.

Anyone notice there are 2 spiders there?
-
Everyone knows ****ed up animals come from aus. you guys have the most venomous snakes, spiders, and wierd things like kangaroos

True indeed. We have the venomous little bastard spiders. The ones you don\'t see that do the damage...
We have these everywhere.. and i mean everywhere. Daddy long legs, although they\'re not dangerous to humans.

These are the ones most people kill on site....
-
damn i hate spiders, is it true that daddy long legs do have the ability to kill humans its just there fangs arent long enough to penetrate human skin?
-
I watched Myth Busters on Discovery and apparently they busted that one.
-
/me crawls out of his skin.. UGH..
The only thing I like about them is blowing them apart..
Air rifle + paper (chew it a bit for extra effect) + spider = spider no more.

They believe that yea, because they kill redbacks without much problems, other people believe its just because they\'re quicker at striking..
-
The venomous one that Australia has that we in Jersey have are the wolf spider and plenty of them. I\'ve had two encounters with them. Both involved me spraying the shit out of them with bug spray, the second time with actual insecticide. I hate spiders and are fun to kill.
-
i\'m not afraid of spiders,..when i was younger i use to pick up ants, spiders, centipedes..mantis..you name it..only insect i didn\'t f**k around with was bees, wasps etc..it was fun tho because i would make these insects fight each other..
-
"Click on a picture if you recognize your spider."
That was in that link with all the Australian spiders...
Scary if you think about it...
You have so many you actually have to look them up...
I hate spiders. The one thing Buddha shouln\'d have created.

I personally love huntsman. I handle them without any probs, and no not every aussie handles spiders. We\'re not all like The croc hunter.
Huntmans aren\'t aggressive, but they can be quite large, the body itself can end up larger then your hand. My father came across once this large only once so far in his life atm.
It was in a steal letter box, its body was inside and the legs were hanging out over the top edges. Dad and Gramps, opened the letter box and it jumped out, ran up and along the fence making shit loads of noise.

I kill spiders. Of all bugs, spiders freak me out the most. I\'m not afraid of them, just creeped out. I don\'t trust anything with more than 4 legs.
-
You can see the dude\'s hand in the top right corner and realize the spiders are right up to the lens. THey aren\'t really that big.
I mean, they are still nasty big, but not freaking huge.
Oh, and how did this thread not get diverted to the lovely camel toe?
