Title: If you were thinking of buying a Mitsu Evo 8...
Post by: Coredweller on April 24, 2004, 06:54:20 PM
Better buy it soon.  DaimlerChrysler announced on Friday that it was going to decline to support Mitsubishi and sell it\'s 37% controlling interest.  If you\'ve been following the troubles Mitsu has been going through in the recent past, you know this could spell doom for them.  Everyone\'s been talking about how much it would cost DC to bail out Mitsu, and what exactly they were going to do, but I don\'t remember anyone seriously suggesting that they would pull the plug.  :)

However, there\'s a contradictory story from Australia.  I\'m not sure what to make of it:

Buy it soon?  But if something happens and they go under who\'s gonna honor the warranty?

their are no warranties on the EVO :p, the only one their is is the ones offered by individual dealerships as far as i know so warranty on the car isnt an issue :p.

not to mention the 4,500 mile sevice intervals and high running costs (fuel and insurance at least in the UK).

Just to keep this thread somewhat interesting: I personally like the Sti more this year.

That STI looks pretty hot. What Evo is that? The 8? The Evo and the WRX STi and the Skyline are really the only three imports I wouldn\'t mind having in my driveway.

Things are probably a little different in your country, but in the US, there is a federally required factory warranty on all new cars.  The minimum is 3 years / 36,000 miles.  That is what is offered on the Evolution 8.  List price is $28,987, and its a real bargain at that price.  I might have considered buying one a couple years ago if they had been available at that time.

Looks like it\'s much cheaper in the US than over here, we pay £30,000 for it, which works out around $50,000!!!

Yes, there are many japanese performance cars that are priced lower here than in the UK.  The Evolution series has been available in England and Europe for many years, but it was only just introduced in North America last year.  It was relatively unknown to car buyers except through video games, so I think they had to price it aggressively.  Also, they knew that Subaru was introducing the Sti at around the same time, so they had to make it competitive.

I think he said that because a lot of people that brough in their Evo8 for warrenty work were denied.  They had to pay for the repair with their own money.  Most of them are said to cause by "abuse"...

Hah hah that\'s another problem altogether.  Though it hasn\'t happened to me, I\'ve heard about dealers denying warranty coverage for no valid reason.  That\'s partly why I would never buy an extended warranty.  Why invest in something that you may never be able to use on the one occasion when you actually need it?

What a hoot.  They sell you a performance car but when you try to get any performance out of it & it breaks you have to convince Mitsu that it wasn\'t your fault.

There are too warranties on it, but it doesn\'t cover things like broken clutches etc. Most the time the dealers look at the computers in the car and see that it died at 150 mph, would you pay for something when someone breaks the law like that?

Mitsubishi\'s own website lists the top speed as 157mph.  Maybe the owner was on a track at the time they achieved 150mph.  That wouldn\'t be against the law.  Ah, but taking your car to a track almost immediately invalidates your warranty, even according to manufacturers like Porsche who sell primarily performance cars designed for the track...

This has nothing to do with "breaking the law."  When is a car, designed as a performance car, driven like a performance car, without it being classified as "abuse?"  Is it an economy car or a performance car?

I\'m sure many owners of economy cars abuse their vehicles much more frequently by running inappropriate tire pressures, not checking the oil, not warming up the engine approriately, etc.  The only difference is that the manufacturer can CATCH the drivers of performance cars by checking the black box.  The more common varieties of abuse are more invisible.  :(
