Kill Bill.. I didn\'t buy it because I figured they would be coming out with a set.
Not only are they coming out individually and as a set, they are also coming out with a special set with more shit.
This is ridiculous. Just make a good disc and sell the damn thing.
They\'ve already sold 2 million copies.
http://www.boston.com/ae/movies/articles/2004/04/27/greedy_studios_make_dvds_not_so_special/
On the first day of its DVD release, "Kill Bill Vol. 1," Quentin Tarantino\'s ultraviolent, ultrastylish revenge orgy starring Uma Thurman, sold 2 million copies and made a whopping $40 million. Customers snapping up this fairly bare-bones disc -- in addition to the film, there\'s only a making-of documentary, a "Vol. 2" trailer, and video from the Japanese all-girl band the 5.6.7.8\'s, who perform in the film -- probably did so expecting a later version featuring both parts of the film. ("Kill Bill Vol. 2" recently opened in theaters.) But what customers buying the disc didn\'t know was that Miramax is actually planning six different DVD releases of the "Kill Bill" films.
Here\'s how Rick Sands, Miramax\'s chief operating officer, explained it to The New York Times last week:
" `Vol. 1\' goes out, `Vol. 2\' goes out, then `Vol. 1 Special Edition,\' `Vol. 2 Special Edition,\' the two-pack, then the Tarantino collection as a boxed set for Christmas," he said. "It\'s called multiple bites at the apple."

It\'s because DVD sales actually trump box office sales these days. The DVD\'s cost nothing to produce and sell for 15 - 25 bucks a pop and sell a massive amount. The market is just absolutely staggering in its girth these days and it\'s primarily because of collectors who now feel having every version of a film is something of a hobby and that\'s just something that never caught on with VHS.

Welcome, to last year.

I know this guy is gonna buy all the sets...
-
Including any oversea\'s editions that have something I want or need, for example, I am about to place an order for the Japanese version of Vol 1 for the blood and extra anime.
:)
-
I have triple dipped on a couple of movies. I do not enjoy it, but each version has a new somthing that I would like to have. The lack of inserts bother me worse than 4 releases of a movie. I feel as if I have bought a boot when there\'s no insert.
-
Boxsets do me, Special editions are renta flicks. Unless they come in boxsets. :)
-
I\'m not sure if a special edition box set for LOTR came out yet but I was waiting through all these different editions just to get it. It is rather rediculous but I don\'t see them stopping it any time soon.
-
They have RotK coming out at the end of May, the super special hyper extended edition around November and then a boxset will be released shortly thereafter.
-
I think it\'s dumb. Join Netflix and have a bazillion movies at your fingertips. Sorta.

There is somthing to be said about having your own Library of DVD\'s that rival if not surpass most rental stores.

Not only that, but the fact that I don\'t like to go to the mailbox and ship crap.
-
How many do you exactly have LIC and what are you going to do with all those DVD\'s when they become obsolete?
-
Don\'t look at me, look at Capcom. We are both approaching the 700+ mark.
And to answer your question, the same thing I did with my VHS - throw them in storage.
;)
-
I only have 100+...
:(
-
I don\'t have a DVD player.
-
You know, I never really bought prerecorded VHS cassettes because I had a sense (even back then) that it was a shitty format. I don\'t feel that way about the current DVD standard, so I have not hesitated in buying DVDs for long term use.
I think that\'s one reason why they\'re going to find it difficult to transition to another format. Not enough people are going to be willing to abandon their old DVDs.
-
Seriously, they have to make it seamless. ie- hi-def players that are cheap and backwards compatible with DVD. Many see the same thing that happened with SACD/DVD-A. There\'s a noticeable difference but the average consumer doesn\'t care because plain, decades-old CD works fine for them.
The trump card, though, is Sony\'s blu-ray is supposed to record to disc in HD. That and with everyone buying an HDTV they\'ll need a source that can support it. Columbia will be releasing all of its future movies Blu-ray & DVD by the end of 2005.
I\'ll still be using Netflix and use the money I save on some neat hardware.
-
As long as it\'s widescreen I dopn\'t care what version it is. I buy DVD\'s for the movies themselves, not the speciaal feaatures.
Crazy huh?
-
I tend to wait for the extended super duper special editions to come out, the buy the original release instead when it becomes half price.
-
Between LIC and I we have around 1400 movies. I would guess around 1200 movies that are different. My guess is that would have Blockbuster beat.
So far as when they become obsolete. I will rebuy. Personally I hope Blu-ray fails since it will have no backward compatabilty. I doubt many of the dvd\'s I own will get a HD transfer. Heck quite a few are less than vhs quality. :(
Edit: If you want to see my collection click my sig. LIC it would not hurt for you to profile.;)
-
Too much damn work to profile on 56k. Not to mention, if I done it by UPC I would be required to dig all the boxes out, see\'ing as I moved mine to DVD-Binders.

Umm...hello, who says Blu Ray can\'t be backward compatible?
Ever heard of dual lasers pickup in DVD player? Or two lasers pickup or twin lasers pick up? What those means on dvd player is, this dvd player have two seperate laser lens, one laser pick up DVD media while the other pick up CD media. Back then, dual laser pick up can be quite costly.
But you can get a great peformance dvd player from panasonic 2004 model with dual lasers pick up with progressive scan for $80.
So what does this have to Blu Ray?
Of course, Dual lasers pick up goes into play. One laser pick up Blu Ray while the other pick up DVD and CD (its actually two but it was stack up on each other).
So the problem solved. the good thing about using seperate laser is they claim that it lengthen the life span of the player and the laser...and make it better at reading disc....or something like that.
The ps2 have only 1 laser pick up. why? to cut cost and make a bit more profit that way. (The laser pick up is actually two but stack up on each other.)
-
I never watch the extra behind the scenes crap on DVDs and i\'m happy with just buying the first "bare-bones" copy that is sold. I buy movies for the actual movie itself, not the extras.
-
I was going by what they were saying a few months back. The entire dual laser is required for atleasr two of the standards. I know squat about the new chinese standard.

After looking into it more. Blu Ray seems nice. It looks as if they are going to get rid of the pirates. No more running out to Blockbuster to copy a movie.
http://www.eetimes.com/story/OEG20031113S0028
"Unlike current DVD technology, the BD-ROM format uses a much stronger encryption algorithm based on 128-bit AES. It features system renewability for key revocation, and incorporates a physical technology for preventing so-called "bit-by-bit" copying to recordable media. Under this scheme, content providers will physically insert a so-called "ROM mark" onto a prerecorded disk during the mastering process. "Our goal is to prevent not only casual copying, but also professional copying, as much as possible," said Fidler. "

Capcom,
you seen the Sony Blu Ray recordable yet? Its already been sold in Japan for a price tag of $2,800.
This Blu Ray was the first Blu Ray ever hit the market in summer 2003? in japan.
Sony said its backward compatible with DVD and CD. How so?
You know Blu Ray use blue laser and it won\'t work on red laser dvd.
So, i assumed Sony use the dual lasers pick up.
Why is this Unit so expensive?
-Its new and the first Blu Ray ever and its not mass produce
-Its have built in HD tuner with DirectTV?
-Why have HD tuner in it? Because This is not just a first Blu Ray Player, it also the first Blu Ray Recorder. It can record HD in MPEG-2 format with Blu Ray blank media which I believe it won\'t come cheap. Its also have two firewires connection to record any source with firewire like Digital video camera or DVHS...
ADD: While Blu Ray specification haven\'t beeen finalized yet or are there any HD DVD movie that support it yet, but Sony just sell it in the market aiming for those who wants HD now and want to use this Blu Ray as a storage of HD and SD video/audio contents....
So, since the recorder cost $2,800. Expect the player which may come out late this year of a price tag of $1,000.

I read somewhere that the biggest reason they use 50% papaer is to cut cost. As you can see, blank disc media are dirt cheap to produce. But by using 50% paper and 50% plastic, it will make it even cheaper to produce...
hey, they could also use it as an excuse for recycling and using recycle paper...shrug...:hat:
