Theree was a massive lightning strike and ;ike the loudest thunder iv ever heard - car alarms going off etc.
Then when i got home the phone lines are down or so i though - but it turns out my modem got a little screwewd so it constantly engaes the phone line even when my comp isnt on
Gonna go get a new one 2day
-
Are you sure you didn\'t overload on the pr0n? ;)
-
Thats why you\'re supposed to buy the good surge protector.
-
Just for your information, if it got the modem, there\'s a good chance it at least hit your motherboard and made it quite abit weaker. I know from experience and I know other people who have the same problem, think it just got the modem and overtime realize it got more.
-
L-I-C just curious, how can a motherboard become weaker? Not trying to start an argument, but I would think it work or be dead - nothing in between.
-
Maybe it\'s time you got a surge protector with phone jacks in it.

Not taken as an arguement..
I\'ll tell you what happened to me... Mine got struck and fried the modem. I replaced the modem. Worked fine for awhile and I noticed it was randomly restarting sometimes...I took it apart again and you could clearly see where it had burnt alittle..I figured, no big deal...Went to add a HD eventually, turned it off..never started back up. It had finally given out. Replaced the MB and everything was A-OK....Never had a problem until lighting hit the modem.... It\'s happened to other\'s, including Capcom ... Mine guess is it simply shorts the circuts out until they finally give away, or something to that extent.
-
The motherboard wasn\'t weaker, it was partially screwed.
Some components would have been cooked. So certain things would have worked fine while other things close to the killed components or on the same tracks would have most likely had problems. The storm would have spiked the motherboard.
Even if u have a surge protector, electricity can jump tracks and still fry your pc. I\'ve got one on my Fuse box, PSU and Power board; I still turn my pc off during a lightning storm.
Surge protectors are really good for 1 thing, insurance claims.
-
If you wanted to go all out you could get a Brick Wall (http://www.brickwall.com/index.htm) line conditioner + UPS and sleep easy.
-
I just happen to own a SERIES 2r BRICK WALL
-
For once I agree with Soul, the best bet is NOT to use your PC / TV / etc during thunderstorms. Unplug the phone line from the PC and so on.. Surge Protectors can help sometimes, but not all the time.
-
Yeh when i got the new one they guy offered me a surge protector but i didnt taker it - probably should have :)
Everything SEEMS to be ok so far, hopefully it will stay that way =]
-
^^^
Chances the guy that offered you the surge protector cost too expensive while all you need is like a $25 one when they purposedly pick a surge protector that cost $100 and over.

They can cost that much? Damn. I thought they were no more than like 25-30 bucks.
-
one he offferd me was £6.99 and the other was £19.99, do ur own exchange rate calculations :p
-
My surge protector unit cost me 149.99 US, so beileive me when I say 19UK is cheap
-
Silly Aussie. You pretty much described weakening of a mainboard. In a rudamentary absolute worst scenario. ;) :notice wink: Closer would be a capacitor or transistor getting taken close to the point of failure. Then right before it fails go back to a normal state. Either way this component would never be 100% again, and would be more likely to fail in the future. Not sure on the paths since I do not do hardware, but I would assume the same could happen there.

My idea of a weakened motherboard isn\'t a few resistors, transistors or caps being damaged. My idea is a whole motherboard being damaged to the point of no return, while still being able to be used. I\'ve repaired quite a few damaged boards from lightning storms. Depending on the damaged part/s of course. :) (and they\'ve lived for quite some time after) Normally the damage is from 12V rail via the psu. My BX2000+ board is still kicking and it got damaged from a storm.
Pcs don\'t even need to be turned on during storms to get damaged from phone lines. All that needs to happen is the modem gets damaged, then when the pc is turned on the modem draws to much current and frys the mobo. This is what gets most people really.
But what would knowing about electronics do in the real word ;)
Notice the wink. ;)
-
blah blah yadda yadda. You are talking full out blown mainboards. Weakened components can last for days, weeks, months, maybe even years. Read link. Especially the newbies guide to building pc\'s. ESD is an electrical surge such as say just perhaps lightning. ;)
If you are doing component level work. You are lower than even pc support guy. Must suck for you to have the guy at your local pub making more money than you. ;)
Now please continue on with your blah blah yadda yadda

Full out blown mobo, lol good one. A full out blown mobo doesn\'t work. It’s a DEAD board. The components are blown, not partially damaged. ATM I’m not working, I’ll be going back soon though. Just in pc/electronics sales. Working for 2 years while getting the company to pay for my Advanced Electronics Diploma and I’ll probably go to uni after that. Not to sure yet, but I know 1 thing.
I\'ll choose electronics over the boring ass software bs that has no demand here what so ever. I know so many software tech heads out of work its not funny. These people are pumping outta tafe/uni like a open flood gate. Must be easy courses or something. I could read a book and do some tests now and get software certificates. WOW.
and your lame sarcastic repetitive remarks are becoming quite boring and lame... Do you have small mans syndrome or something? Doesn\'t anybody love you? Need to feel like a big man?
Then email Here (whogivesatoss@notme.com)

You my australlian friend rephrased what LIC said. Lightning can weaken circuits.
Sorry about your career choice. You do realize board level people get paid minimum wage. Unless of course you are an engineer which it is obvious you can never be.

Maybe he isnt obsessed by money...like some people

Yes , because we all know we live in a world where a good paying job is not a requirement for a decent living....
You live in a fantasy world if you think that. It\'s not that I am obsessed by money, but the fact that money makes the world go round and if you want to actually own anything in your life , you need a good paying job.
-
You think a dead board is a weakened board, then u say I can\'t be an engineer lol.
Minimum wage in usa maybe. Guess what genius, i\'m not american.
You still haven\'t told us your amazing high paid job. I\'m guessing people in assembly make more cash then you. Sense it seems that you are so eager to prove yourself every 2 seconds.
ps. I understand you don\'t know what a advanced electronics diploma is. So you\'re excused. Let me put it in a simpler term for you to understand. Advanced Diploma of Engineering.

I work with a couple that have an electronics degree. I make more than they do. Quite a bit more. Simple fact of the matter is that unless you design the components. There is 0 money in it. Most everything is cheaper to replace than repair.
The entire point of this discussion was you jumping in that there can\'t be weakened boards.
To pull a quote from you. You don\'t know me or some bs you always do. Needless to say I do ok in my chosen profession.
So far as anything else you post in this thread. It is hereby ignored. So have it.

God damn, it\'s simple..
Lighting hit the board - it weakened circuits / etc and the board eventually gave out.
:shakes head:

U still haven\'t told me your job. Also, even if u work with people with electronics degrees, it means dick. Its not the cert, its the job they get with it that makes the difference. Waits for the "oh

LIC. A weakened board and a Screwed board are 2 different things. A weakened board doesn\'t die, it just doesn\'t perform 100% and screwed board is a dead or will die board.
This is from personal experience with board repairs. If its not worth repairing its thrown out. Most weakened boards continue to function without a shortened life; they do get problems in certain areas of the board though. PCI slots not working etc etc. But when it comes down to it, its all about personal view.
My view with weakened boards, is it has a section that doesn\'t work etc. Not a completely screwed board.
Then again we could use your rule and caps rule and just say all boards are weakened boards sense they all die from failing in some way. ;)
notice the wink.

The computer works. The modem is dialing up on it\'s own. Or if I am reading right. Locks the phone line as if it is dialing. It does this when it is off. Which means the circuit is in an open state. Not that the computer is locking the circuit or some bs like that. So go on with your bad self.
Position IT manager. Pay. My own family does not know that you snoopy little pimple faced Aussie. Notice no wink.
If you go into board level I wish you the best of luck. Actually come to think of it I don\'t. :D

Jackass.. Snoopy??? maybe u mean snobby genius. Snoopy is a groovy little dog. Keep the insults rolling in, just shows me that you\'re not intelligent enough to debate without insults.
You call me the snob, yet I\'m not the one obsessed with cash and look down apon anyone else for their job.
IT manager, theres a really specific job title..

apon?
I am not obsessed with money. You need a decent paying job to survive. You are young, and still have not had to deal with life.

im starting to wish i had just kept my mouth shut :)

Cap, I\'m sure I could get a "decent paying job" with an advanced diploma in engineering. Thanks for your concern though. :)
as for apon, my mistake. meant upon. :)
