Impressive as hell.  Of course, now I\'ll have to re-buy my whole PS1 library when they re-release things for the PSP...   That GT game looks amazing... better then PS1 from the short bit they showed!

THIS is what a portable should be like!

I doubt I\'ll use it for movies though.. unless you can burn the mini disks, and it\'ll play DivX or something.

Amazing looking, but how much of this is real?  BTW, that new MGS game on the PSP is a card game from the looks of it.  How sad.  We\'ll see with more details tomorrow though.  You can find details on 1up.com.

Sony Computer Entertainment Announces Product Specifications of Handheld Video Game System PlayStation Portable (PSPTM)

Los Angeles, May 11, 2004 – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today the product specifications for the handheld video game system, PlayStation®Portable (PSPTM). 3D-CG games incorporating high quality full motion video similar to PlayStation®2 can be played anytime, anywhere with PSP. PSP is scheduled to be launched in Japan in the end of 2004, followed by the North American and European launches in the spring of 2005.

PSP comes in a black color, with a 16:9 widescreen TFT LCD centered in a sleek ergonomic design with a high quality finish that fits comfortably in the hands. The dimensions are 170mm x 74mm x 23mm with a weight of 260g. PSP features a high quality TFT LCD that displays full-color (16.77 million colors) on a 480 x 272 pixel high-resolution screen. It also comes complete with the basic functions of a portable player such as built-in stereo speakers, exterior headphone connector, brightness control and sound mode selection. Keys and controls inherit the same operability of PlayStation® and PlayStation 2, familiar to fans all over the world.

PSP also comes equipped with diverse input/output connectors such as USB 2.0, and 802.11b (Wi-Fi) wireless LAN, providing connectivity to various devices in the home and to the wireless network outside. The world of gaming is further enhanced by enabling users to enjoy on-line gaming, or by connecting multiple PSPs to each other, directly via the wireless network. In addition, software and data can be downloaded through a USB or wireless network onto Memory StickTM PRO Duo. All of these features can be enjoyed on one single system.

PSP adopts a small but high capacity optical medium UMDTM (Universal Media Disc), enabling game software, rich with full motion video and other forms of digital entertainment content, to be stored. The newly developed UMD, the next generation compact storage media, is only 60mm in diameter but can store up to 1.8GB of digital data. A broad range of digital entertainment content such as music video clips, movies and sports programs can be provided on UMD. To protect this entertainment content, a robust copyright protection system has been developed which utilizes a combination of a unique disc ID, a 128 bit AES encryption keys for the media, and individual ID for each PSP hardware unit.

SCEI intends to aggressively promote PSP and UMD as the new handheld entertainment platform for the coming era.

The PSP is getting one heck of a bashing in the Penny-arcade forums.

Talk about the 10 hour battery time being Audio only......and the fact that its reduced to 2.5 hours when you play games.
Title: PSP videos
Post by: MAKAVELIUK on May 12, 2004, 10:18:15 AM
Isn\'t 2.5 for videos because the drive is constantly operating, whereas the games and audio store data in memory freeing the strain on the battery because it doesn\'t have to keep the drive operating.

Im right with you there. Rebuying  my ps1 library is not something i want to do right now. Still it looks amazing. That GT4M vid cant be real. If it is then im afraid i might have to buy this one.

all i can say is wow

One thing though: I think a stand and a keyboad is going a little
too far in terms of peripherals

*one more thing: I hope this new wave in power doesnt abolish the 2d games.

The power wave will do to 2D gaming on handhelds what PS1 did to 2D gaming on consoles, most likely.

The graphics are all the more impressive on such a small screen.

Official uk-playsation site lists the game time at

10 Hours Music Play back
8 hours Game Time
and 2.5 hours for MOVIES.

Not bad... if fact 8 hours is more than enough.

plus there is the option for external Battery pack to boost Power if 8 hours arn\'t hardcore enough for you.

And what about 3 hour movies??? It sux that you would have to replace the batteries after every movie you watch. I dont really care about watching movies on the thing but still thats pretty cheap in that aspect.

I\'m a firm believer, that if you can\'t do something right, then don\'t bother at all and Sony obviously needs to abide by this rule. Almost two \'n half hours for a movie is unexcusable. It would make more sense, to drop the movie playback altogether and focus on the games / system design, but instead, Sony, as usual gives a half-ass attempt, so that they can say "LOOK, IT PLAYS MOVIES".... Seems a lot like deja vu and early PS2 DVD firmware, back when you had to guess if your PS2 would play a movie or wouldn\'t.

Thats exactly what im saying. I mean it looks great for games in some cases but the whole battery life issue is just plain rediculous. There are movies longer than 2.5 hours and to have the thing just cut off in the middle of it is unacceptable. I guess they figure that nobody will sit there for 3 hours holding this thing looking at the screen.

I can understand that but its still no excuse. I say drop the movie aspect and work on keeping the game hours up. And it should come with a rechargeable battery. Just MO

LIC is right. We shouldn\'t be fanboy-ish in any way in respect to PSP\'s battery life issue. Sony has had time to research why Game Gear, N-Gage and others failed....so they should know battery life is #1 priority. If the average real game app battery life will be no more than 5 hours ; PSP will fall flat on it\'s face.

I won\'t say it will fall on its face, but I do think Sony has had enough time to research the importance of battery life. Instead, they just assume everyone will jump on it, just like they originally did with the HDD.

Ok... so i did some browsing on average battery life for notebooks ; none of them last longer than 9 hours, and those are the specs from the best. The most range from 4,5 to 8 hours. the 8 to 10 hours PSP gaming is thus quite acceptable imo.
Also, consider this ; being 4,5 hours at one single place isn\'t really being \'on the move\'. And how many times do you find yourself out of urban reach outside of acces to any power outlet ?

Of course Sony should give us the best , for what a PSP unit has in terms of battery operation life. And imo the different grades of batteries unit system, which notebooks already have, is a good idea.

And Nintendo has never done anything wrong in the handheld arena? Get serious.

How many of you require more than 5 hour battery life on a handheld before recharging it? Seriously, I want to know.

I have a laptop, and I\'m not complaining about 2-3 hours of batterytime on it. In fact, I\'ve only once used it all up at once before having time to recharge it.

Even Centrino notebooks only have a battery life of maximum 4 hours Knotter. 8 hours for a new notebook? That\'s unheard of.

Most people over the age of 16 are not out and about long enough to use up 5 hours of their time on a handheld anyway. So it\'s not THAT important if you ask me.

^ I never said nor implied that Nintendo did it perfect... :(

In fact...my expierence with my GBA, playing MGS Ghost Bable, is that even high quality Duracells don\'t last longer than 10 hours.
Heck... I can\'t even stand to play THAT long in one session, on any small portable device....

I just hope that the overall Life time cycle ( # of recharges ) is big enough and that the adapter comes with the PSP by default.

Riiiiight... Giving more money to Sony? It figures that you would say something like that. The last time i remembered, your money didnt go to Sony when you bought batteries. That is unless they have their own "special" battery. In that case, i would probably agree with you. That or if you have to buy an add on. If thats what you mean by expansion then I would REALLY have to agree.

Sadly, Im sure that you meant an add on and thats really lame. Paying 15 bux or so for a fat ass pack to stick an extra battery in is f*ing gay.
