Could the Phantom PC game console be for real? This morning its maker, Infinium Labs, a company that has come in for harsh criticism from many game industry corners, put its cards on the table. In a fact-filled statement, the company said the service for its self-styled "game receiver" would launch November 18, 2004.
Infinium also revealed what\'s inside the receiver: an AMD Athlon XP 2500+ central processing unit, an Nvidia GeForce FX 5700 Ultra graphics processing unit, and an Nvidia nForce2 Ultra 400 platform processor. The receiver will be manufactured at Taiwan-based Biostar’s production facility in Guangdong Province, China. Other key specs of the Phantom receiver are DirectX 9-compliant graphics and audio, Dolby Digital 5.1 channel audio, 256MB of RAM, and a 40GB hard drive.

Anyone else think that giving Infinium Labs your bank detals for the subscription service could be a bad idea ?
it sounds as wise as accpeting a free drink of a stranger at a bar...only to be knoked out and wake in a bath tub filled with ice ...minus your kidneys.

It\'s legit and it will launch.
I fail to see the big deal.

Obviously you haven\'t heard anything about it, if you didn\'t know that it doesn\'t really need support as in the most common way, aka third party or exclusive first party games. Why? Because it\'s a set-top PC box, allowing people to play PC games without any hassle or so that\'s the general idea of it.

Glad to see that Clips got it...
Yes thats what i am concerned about... this thing has been "flying" below the radar ...a little to suspiciously for too long…especially seeing that its due for release this year.

I don\'t care what Infinium says, I\'m still thinking vaporware.
And if not, I guess it has been a while since the last Jaguar or 3DO.
Wow, 3DO... I wonder if Panasonic people even remember what that was.

The funny thing is, I have both the Jag and the 3DO.
No, i didnt pay for them (and i didnt take them either!)

All this talk about monthly subscription fees is a real turn off.
-
Why would you pay for it in it\'s PC role? I, like most people, have a far superior PC sitting on my desk right now. The subscription only allows access to a limited number of games for free, which is generally going to be older games and freeware. If you wanted to play Half Life 2, Farcry, and Doom 3, you would have to pay the additional cost of EACH game, which means you pay a monthly subscription, and the cost of games - which you download to the HDD (and lord help you if you then delete one, cancel the subscription, and get a hankering to play it again).....
Plus since my computer is better than that one, I can run Far Cry maxxed at 1280x1024, but with that thing..... no way... For it\'s \'multimedia\' connectivitiy.. well, my computer is hooked up to my TV, and I have much more HDD on which to store games/movies/MP3s....

Until they actually show something Phantom=vaporware.
Those guys...ehem excuse me....That GUY at Infinium Labs has been talking out of his ass for years about this thing with nothing to show for it.

ahaha. How the hell have they managed to find investors for this crap?
