Internal schedules at Microsoft as recently as last November called for the Xbox 2 to be launched in time for Christmas 2004, sources close to the company have revealed - and the firm is still thought to be considering a launch by mid-2005.
Sources at a number of key Xbox developers, who cannot be named for legal reasons, have confirmed that when the company originally revealed the outline specification for Xbox 2 late last year, the company surprised its partners by suggesting that the new hardware would be in shops for Christmas 2004.
The system has since slipped from that schedule - which also called for an unveiling of the specification at GDC, at the high-profile press conference which the company eventually used for the launch of the XNA development platform - but Microsoft apparently still has hopes to get the new console out in mid-2005, ahead of the Christmas 2005 release anticipated by most commentators.
"I think they underestimated how hard it was going to be to build a console that wasn\'t using PC architecture," one source familiar with the firm\'s console development efforts told us today. "But they\'re racing to get to the market as soon as possible - they really want to reverse the head start that Sony had last time."
A launch in mid-2005 would probably give Microsoft a full year\'s head-start on Sony\'s PS3, and possibly even more, as some commentators have suggested that Sony could allow the PS3 to slip further in order to allow the PlayStation Portable to hold the limelight for longer.
One consequence of Microsoft\'s eagerness to launch a next-generation console so soon is that the firm has allegedly encouraged developers to move to next generation development ahead of schedule. While few if any companies have moved their PS2 teams onto PS3 projects as yet, discussions with developers over the past week have revealed that quite a few are wrapping up work on the Xbox with their current projects and are moving on to Xbox 2 development imminently - or have done so already. It\'s not a universal trend by any means, as several companies are still planning to start new Xbox titles in the coming months, but it\'s certainly a different landscape from the thriving environment that is PlayStation 2 development.
Of Microsoft\'s internal big-name studios, it\'s seemingly planned that Halo 2 will be Bungie\'s last Xbox title before moving on to Xbox 2 development, while UK-based Rare is already working on Xbox 2 software - with the highly anticipated Perfect Dark follow-up apparently planned for the next-generation hardware. The firm\'s range of XSN Sports titles have also been cancelled in 2004 and will now appear in 2005 instead - quite possibly as early Xbox 2 titles, thus giving the new console a full range of sports games from the first stages of its lifespan.
This is a risky gamble for the company. If they can launch the Xbox 2 in mid-2005, they\'ll certainly have an impressive head-start and will have the only next generation platform on the market for at least six to nine months. However, Xbox users may feel unhappy with the short life-span of their console as the flow of original titles for the platform dries to a trickle in 2005 - and if no new console is forthcoming until late in the year, then 2005 begins to look very barren for Microsoft.
My take on the early lead is that if the system has the right games at launch and to follow then the gamers won\'t mind. Perfect Dark at launch would be awesome...but this is Rare we\'re talking about, we\'ll be lucky to see it by 2007.

I\'ll say this right now, If XBOX2 comes out with a VGA adaptor(sometime within it\'s launch period) I will defiantly purchase one. Plus I wouldn\'t mind if could connect a mouse to it for FPS games--PLEASE M$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I can\'t wait to see some Next Gen screenshots.
-
In regards to your commemt BlackSam, I\'m waiting for mm to come in here and drop a short typical line such as this example:
Photoshop?
-
MM hasn\'t posted yet, so I guess I\'ll fill in for him. Here goes!
"meh"
-
Joanna Dark would be a perfect front running character for the Xbox2. I doubt I\'ll wait in line for this one but the preliminary hardware specs sound crazy.
-
Yes mouse support!!! I\'m all for that. I love my PS2 but I will not buy a single FPS game without a mouse support. The only FPS game I can stand on a console is Halo. They should make a special mouse and keyboard for the Xbox like they did for the dreamcast and like PS2 has (but make it supported by every game).

photoshop?

I want! :D

Who cares about VGA:
here is what is important
multi out analog port for A/V.
and another HDMI for hd 1080p video and multichannel hi res audio.
Again, HDMI is the future of video signal that also carries audio for convenient.
-
Who cares about VGA:
Paul don\'t get me started. For the past 5 years I only game on a CRT or HDTV. Analog low-res TV are pathetic to game on.
Now considering XBOX will be able to output at higher than 480, there had better be a VGA adaptor. Also A mouse is badly needed for games like HALO, how on GOD\'s green earth can people play fps with a gamepad.
-
Paul always likes to input his a/v knowledge whenever he gets the chance ;)
HDMI has a bandwidth of 5gbps and can be fully digital. VGA is analog but can support even higher resolutions I think. You\'ll start to see more HDMI connections within a couple of years. It\'s primary purpose it actually for copyright protection so it\'ll have much more penetration in the home theater market.
I\'m betting a VGA transcoder/adapter will be available.. either through MS or 3rd party.

also having opposable thumbs helps

Yea after awhile you get to use it, I just have a really hard time since I\'ve been playing FPS games on the PC for 3-4 years.

Hello, I believe videogames consoles are mainly made to hook up with a tv. Look at XBOX, it can be hook up with hdtv with an adapter with component video. 1080p hdtv are on its way to the market (maybe around 2006 as that\'s the mandatory time where many broadcast will be switching to digital video and hd.)
Althought VGA would be perfect for analog videogames, but many hdtv don\'t have VGA, most only have component video and DVI. Now, HDMI is replacing DVI.

you got me there.:shy::p

HDMi bandwidth is 5 Gbits per sec, versus DVI 1.5 Gbits, that is found on hdtv and computer Graphic Card which have both VGA and DVI...
I could see future graphic card on computer replacing the DVI with HDMI...
Because DVI can only display maximum of 1280 x 960 resolution at 60 frames per second and 24 bits of color uncompressed and it max out from there.
With HDMI, having more than 3x that bandwidth and the size of the connection is about the size of USB (which is smaller than DVI),
it can carry as high as VGA bandwidth. Not sure which is higher. But I they are comparable in the bandwidth. Except 1 is digital and the other is analog.
If HDTV can display a resolution of 1920 x 1080p @ 75 Hz x 24 bits of color,
then that\'s about 3.7 Gbits per second...there is still some more bandwidth left to spare. It can go higher frame rates or higher resolution, but not necessary. Plus it also carrys audio too for conveniency.
Look for HDMI to replace DVI on the graphic card on the future in the near future, maybe as early as beginning of next year.

Don\'t be so sure. Dell\'s 20" LCD (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/ProductDetail.aspx?category_id=5194&k=&mnf=&brandid=&prst=&prEnd=&sku=320-1578&mnfsku=&SearchType=&Page=productlisting.aspx&spagenum=1&Pageb4Search=&InStock=&items_per_page=25&orderby=&mnfname=&brand=&SubmitSearch=&image_flag=True&refurbished=&c=us&l=en&cs=19&iCompatid=) has a native res of 1600x1200 with a DVI-D connection.
-
I think THX is on crack.
Look, its have VGA on it. I guess the reason it will support 1600 x 1200 with 24 bits color and 60hz is through VGA connection...
i doubt LCD can go up to 60hz, maybe .16 miliseconds....and LCD can\'t produce great black level like CRT. It have color quality of about 18 bits color...
but i believe the only way to get that 1600 x 1200 x 24 x 60 is through VGA connection...
look at the specs again,
it said, connection: VGA, DVI, Composite, and S Video....
does that means S-Video and composite can get up tol 1600 x 1200 @ 60Hz too?
Do the math multiply these for me:
1600 x 1200 x 24 x 60=
2,764,800,000
or 2.7 Gbits....and DVI only limited to 1.65 Gbits per sec....
-
mmm crack is good
I\'ve had the 2001FP on an ATI 9700 DVI connection since December and I have NEVER noticed event a hint of ghosting... I am currently playing through Far Cry and it is wonderful with zero ghosting.
I\'m using it with a Radeon 9800 Pro through the DVI.
--------------------
Yep, i have run games at 1600x1200 with everything turned down
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=31&threadid=1299452
Had to buy a new video card to run 1600x1200 DVI
http://reviews.cnet.com/Dell_UltraSharp_2001FP/4852-3174_7-30588561.html?pn=1&fb=1&ob=0
and for the kicker:
Streaking and ghosting:
2001FP (digital)........5, None
2001FP (analog)........5, Extremely present at 1600x1200. Analog signal is not capable.
Obviously, with the 1600x1200 resolution, we are pumping more data over the analog signal, which makes it more susceptible to imperfections. The obvious solution here is only to use the DVI cable.
http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1918&p=13
We better stop now, the girls will think we\'re nerds :(
-
yawn,
don\'t know how the heck they get 1600 x 1200 via DVI...yawn...
-
ok, not only do you not know what you\'re talking about, you\'re tired too. Got it.
;)
-
THX is actually pretty naive in the audio/video world...in terms about computer software and possibly softwares, you may know more than me. But video world in home entertainment and even audio world, i believe i got the upperhand.
Look, DVI have a max bandwidth of about 1.65 Gbits per second.
That webpage didn\'t say anything about the LCD refresh rate, or how many bits of color does it display max....
again,
DVI can\'t do 1600 x 1200 without sacrificing framerate/refresh rate or color bandwidth.
it doesn\'t have enough bandwidth to do it all uncompressed.
Again, do you know how banwidth and bitrate are measure in audio/video world?
Look to get a bandwidth of a video signal:
just simply multiply its horizontal resolution with vertical resolution and framerate.
to get a "total bitrate" of a video signal just mulitply the bandwidth with total bits of colors:
horizontal x vertical resolution x framerate x color bandwidth aka bits of color.
like this
lets assume 1600 x 1200 is the total resolution.
24 bits is the maximum color
and 60 hz is the maximum refresh rate
so multiply them all together.
Again, like i said,
1600 x 1200 x 24 x 60 =2,764,800,000
or 2.57 Gbits...
You see, DVI spec is only limited to 1.65 Gbits per second. Its simply doesn\'t have enough bitrate to do that.
Get your fact straight THX, look up the DVI spec and also look up how bandwidth is measure and how video/audio total bitrate are measure.
Want me to go on about audio bitrate measurement? Why not?
let use CD redbook:
44.1 kHz sampling 16 bits 2 ch stereo
44,100 hz sampling
16 bits of s/n ratio and dynamic
2 channels stereo
how to measure it total bitrate here? It doesn\'t take a genious, just multiply them all.
44,100 x 16 x 2 = 1,411,200 bits. That\'s how bits are measure.
how to get it to become bytes? Divided by 8.
as you may have known
8 bits = 1 byte
so 1,411,200 divided by 8 = 176,400 bytes. or approximately about 176.4 Kbytes...the k stand for kilo....or thousand...

hmm sig update time. btw who the **** cares!? This ain\'t a pissing contest about who knows more. I don\'t give a shit if you know 5 times as much as me I was merely pointing out what I found.
Don\'t let your ego get in the way dood. We can have a nice conversation without you coming in every thread typing HDMI this or HDTV that.
-
thx,
i am just pointing out that you say i don\'t know what i am talking about but i do and you try to prove me wrong. But I was right about what i said.
-
This is just another example of Paul2 acting like he has a clue on what is going on. He done the exact same stuff in the PC Forum and I started pointing it out, time and time again.
I like to think of Paul2 as our resident "copy and paste" person. Copy and paste every bit of info he gets off websites and when he get\'s wild he types it out, which usually comes out totally wrong, thus pointing out his ignorance.
:)
No hard feelings, of course.
Back on topic, boys and girls.
-
LIC, its amazing that you come up with the theory that I copy and paste stuff...
unless, you could prove me that I did copy and paste.
go ahead and prove me wrong.
Oh, how is the right side superman is doing?
-
LIC, its amazing that you come up with the theory that I copy and paste stuff.
Paul, if it\'s any consolation, I have been accused of the same thing before, without any proof of course, to back the accusations up. When you start getting technical with some people here, there last line of defense is "well you just copied and pasted that"
On a side note PAUL, if DVI is truly limited, then the PC LCD industry is going to have to come up with a new Standard very soon, after all LCD are beginning to get more advanced every year, soon we will expect native res 1200x1600 19inch LCD\'s that can produce faster refresh rates, etc...

They both do, but Paul2 even more so. He done the exact crap in PC forum and I pointed it out. Not that I have anything against him, I just think it\'s cute.
;)
-
I\'m just going to sit back and watch my HD set and say screw it, I don\'t care about the bandwidth going in and out of the box. It just looks freaking good.
What was this thread about again?
-
They both do,
Really, So LIC and mm how come whenever you have made these accusations, never did you provide any proof to back it up. I mean get a grip on life, if you accuse someone of copying and pasting yet bring forth no evidence to back it up, how then can you make such juvenile statments. This just goes to show how much of blatant ding-dongs you both are. As it stands your clams are nothing but hearsay, and this just goes to show everyone here reading this that you still have the mind of a 12 year old.
So please comeback and talk to us when you have the evidence to support your delusional clams. We all know it\'s not going to happen, cause CUT/Pasting never did occur, it\'s like I said, your last pathetic defense is to falsely accuse someone of plagiarizing
Also I would Like to point out that since it\'s obvious you two have been caught lying, PAUL2 has much more creadabilty then any of you, so please mm go crawl back in the hole you came from.
-
Nvidia256,
wow.
I was going to say well said as i read the first two paragraphs. The two last sentences, wow...thanks for backing me up...
again, I think they both (LIC and mm) were being sarcastic.
Oh, LIC, thanks for thinking its cute.;) :facelick:
-
again, I think they both (LIC and mm) were being sarcastic
I don\'t think so, this isn\'t the first time they have played this angle before.

PAUL2 has much more creadabilty then any of you
You gotta watch that.. ;)
Sure he does, just don\'t go asking him advice about computer hardware, how to encode video, or why you should only keep your big fat 20" LCD monitor at 1280x960.

he, he, he:eyemouth:
