Even though it was released nearly 4 years ago in the US? Is it coz there aren\'t as many released games for the PS2 as was for the PSOne? When rumors and speculation about PS3 was to be released in 2005, I thought, "Man, the PS2 is only in hitting its stride!"
Yet, PS2 was released in Oct 26 in 2001, correct? Or was it 2000? Anyway, it still seems like new to me. :D
Sorry for the retrospect...but I was wondering is anyone else shared the same opinion.
-
Xbox and GC are even newer, and they\'re said to be released early too.
-
Unfortunately Im growing rather weary of the PS2, same goes with the X-box and Gamecube. This generation has lost it\'s appeal and it\'s getting tiresome. Right now all I ever play is my PC because console games lost they\'re awe factor. Here\'s to the next generation.
-
I still enjoy the ps2, there are some great games on the horizon too. Not bad for a machine nearly 4 years old. :D
-
Well... it\'s like this ; there are some great PS2 games coming up like MGS3, Killzone, SH4 etc.
But with the PC now in transition from AGPx8 to PCI-E the \'weaknesses\' which consoles always have had compared to PC become a notch more appearant. DX9 effects on consoles are nil.
Xbox can \'simulate\' those, but it comes at a cost which Xbox
is known for ; very limited framerate.
Check this Splinter Cell 3 movie :
SC3 for PC (http://itavisen.no/snurrfilm.html?navn=E304/sc3.wmv&server=2&PHPSESSID=09e13e6cf7bc602584fbe9ce7dca01e6)
SC3 is made from scratch for PC by Ubi Montreal, the original SC team. I read they made a whole new engine for #3 instead of tweaking that Unreal tech again.
So...the Xbox won\'t be the SC3 starting point. Framerate was a bit weak in Xbox Pandora Tomorrow imo. I can\'t imagine Xbox running SC3 without a huge downgrade in visuals.
Anyway, Konami\'s Kojima team and the likes are still able to get some graphical candy out of PS2 some more ; just look at the new MGS3 E3 trailer where \'Snake\' wades through water and watery mud ; the mud looks very very good with a kind of alpha mapped specular shader. But imo the next generation, consoles will marginally lose popularity compared to PC\'s.

I was starting to get bored but after seeing a few games from these years E3 trailers I got interested again.Actually I got excited.
Graphical evolution on PS2 is still great.SH4 looks freakishly gorgeous, GT4 wows, Tekken5 seems greatly improved compared to 4, MGS3 shows great promise and great graphical detail, DMC3 although not sure if it will suck showed great graphics and animation and also superb scenes (scenes like the first part of the trailer is enough to keep me more interested on console games)
I seem to get more interested on console games more than PCs despite the unmatched PC graphical performance due to reasons other than graphics as well.PS2 seems to still do the job for me
-
Well in terms of PC\'s, you must also remember that they cost 5 times more and sometimes more than that (to at least get the performance you want). Inbetween that time you may upgrade your pc 2-3 times where you just pay the initial 300 or so for the Console. Now im not giving an excuse for why consoles have the upperhand because thats far from the truth. Its just that you cant always complain about the technology difference in consoles vs. PC.
PS2 still gets the job done for me. There are times where i just play old games and yes, in its aging, it has lost some of its appeal but there are games that came out ages ago that i have had or havent had that still keep my interest. I mean, im still playing GT3. GuiltyGearX2 always gets some action. The list goes on, but with a storm of good looking games coming along, im perfectly fine with this generation.
-
Though I respect the PC\'s graphical power, I just wanna sit on the couch or floor and play a video game on my large screen TV. Not on my 19 inch monitor.
How many expensive video cards have lived and died since the PS2\'s arrival? I love my PC....but $340 for a video card and 3 years later, it\'s about $50 in the bargain bin. Yeah, it\'ll produce graphically superior games.....but still...console games is where it\'s at.
Think of it this way : Console games make more money than most PC games.
-
^ Indeed, console\'s graphics are sufficient enough until now to immerse the player. But the argument that PC\'s cost several times as much doesn\'t really hold anymore, becuz most ppl (parents) have a decent PC already. The PC games of today become more and more reliant on just the graphics card, rather than insane cpu clockspeed. Anyone with a 2 Ghz CPU pc and a Radeon 9600 will be able to play games like HL2 pretty well, whereas the PS2 and NGC won\'t be able to play that game ....at all.... and that is a fact which Sony and Nintendo cannot deny.
Add on the effect on card prices when the Gf6800 and Radeon X800 arrive ; guess what ppl will buy to play greatlooking games :
a dirtcheap Fx5950/Radeon 9800 or a PS2 with aging visuals ?
-
I like the variety of styles seen mostly in console targeted games in terms of artwork and presentation.More detailed graphics just cant replace that. For example what games on PC have we seen that can match the presentation and style seen in DMC?Games on PC usually follow similar stereotypes and certain genres seem to have the most appeal like strategy and FPS.On consoles a greater amount of genres seem to share the same amount of appealing from gamers.
Platform games, fighting games, RPGs, action games, survival horror games, flight games a la ace combat, racing games etc all seem to have an equal position in console gaming.
-
i used to plove my ps2, but ow i have a x box, and game cube, it is the least played of the lot.
i must admit i have not enjoyed my ps2, or any of the other console more than i did the ps1,.
-
PS2 doesn\'t feel new to me, but the XBOX and GC do.
-
This is going to sound stupid but the reason I like playing PC games more is simply because of the feel. Theres a different feel to using the keyboard and mouse that just seems right...compared to using a controller. I\'ll never be able to reap the true benifits of PC gaming untill I get a better gfx card though.
-
I think ps2 is overshadowed by ps1 because ps2 didn\'t really provide any revolutionary games or anything, most ps2 games are just the same crap over and over again.
-
^ :o I totally disagree.....
To Unicron ; yes the PS2 does indeed feature that typical broad array of console games, but......same goes for PC as well I guess
; RTS genre, USA/Europe made RPG/adventures...
Don\'t get me wrong I consider myself more a console gamer than a PC gamer (PS2, Xbox and Pc with only SplinterCell installed).
Also....some genres which were strong on consoles a few years back, like the conventional fighting games and F1 games, have been pretty weak nowadays.... Consoles still don\'t have many RTS games and more and more devs are trying to make FPS work on consoles ; Halo 1&2, GoldenEye 007, Killzone, Timesplitters1&2, Geist etc...
Then, companies like Sega, Konami, Rockstar, Ubi Soft, Eidos and MS game Studios all bring big console games over to PC. SH4 and MGS3 will probably make it to PC as well... Of course...Japanese RPG\'s and niche games you won\'t find on pc but since I\'m not into RPG\'s at all that\'s no big loss.
On the hardware side of things: Xbox2 and N5 \'ll probably be powered by a custom version of Ati\'s X800.......hmmmmm
-
PS2 compared to the PSX (PSone) after the same period of time, the PS2 feels fresher.
I also have a GC, but IMO the PS2 feels more fresh. E3 might have had something to do with it, PS2 keeps on impressing (even compared to the PC!)
-
Yeah, just to add a few things before im out to school:
The ps2 or just consoles in general (but mostly the ps2) have a larger learning curve and the pure excitement from learning how some devs have mastered some aspect of that hardware is uncompareable to anything else. Im not saying that its the #1 reason why consoles have an upper hand but you cant deny the fact that it is something that give that market a boost
I mean, we went from midnight club and ssx which some people thought were awestricking (sp?) but now we have GT4 and similar titles. If youre a techie or a general gamer, the leaps made in developing for the ps2 etc. is very facinating.

RTS? whats an RTS?
Anyways for the other genres though these genres like fighting games even weaker than previously it is still stronger on consoles.Weaker or not than previously it doesnt change anything.(Thats due to the fact that only 3 developers seem to rule in that genre and they are bringing franchises that were used and survived since 1994.Capcom/Namco/Sega)
As much as developers are trying to bring console titles on PCs they rarely have the same appealing.Just like FPS that have less appealing on consoles.Your arguement doesnt change the fact that the many genres I mentioned cant offer the same gameplay experience on PCs.And when good console developers think of console games they take a different approach.
Just see famous console games that are realeased on PCs.They stand out in aspects other than graphics.Famous PC games that are released on consoles feel very much the same or have the same gameplay schemes. Also in console games especially from japanese developers the story and character development are as important as the gameplay. And everything is based on these things including the gameplay. So according to story or character you get a totally different feel from each game.If the game isnt story/character driven they try to create a sense of style and dynamism. For example lets take Ace Combat.Namco tried to incorporate the feel of air combat. And it stands out depsite the fact that is less complicated than most PC flight sims.
Or lets take the Gran Turismo series. How many racing titles on PC have been adored as much by car lovers as GT?
Lets see one more time what games have a strong appealing in consoles?
Fighting games, beat-em-up games, RPGs, Racing games, Adventure games, Platform games, Action games.
Now take each genre and you ll see a greater variety of styles and even sub-genres despite the fact that less multi region released games are being released on consoles(unless ofcourse if you are living in Japan :p) on hardware that is older because they have to express more creativity in order to impress since the hardware is still the same old one and possibilities from it are less. Thus games dont evolve only on hardware evolution in consoles.
PC games evolve as hardware evolves.Games become better almost solely because of better AI, graphic effects, sound etc that more powerful hardware offers

Real Time Strategy ;) games
Well, I guess in the end I agree with you and most games, from either side, get hurt in the port proces. Maybe I got a little into the Nvidia and Ati hype which is now going on with their new videocards, but for me where it all comes down to : when Sony announces Nico (Ico 2) for PS3. I am truly of opinion that game DESERVES next gen hardware.
-
Hmm yea. I don\'t know but I think I\'m starting to grow out of it. I don\'t remember the last time I bought a game!
-
IMO, PS2 hit it\'s graphical peak about a year ago and now it\'s in a nice stride. I watched alot of the E3 videos for each console and while PS2 still manages to look great, Xbox and GC seem to be pulling out ahead more and more.
-
SER ^and you\'re ..... old ? I\'m 26 and i\'ll be gamer for life. Heck, I find it hard enough to fit in some hours for gaming between busy work and sports. Yeah i know those \'down\' times... but you\'ll be back. Everybody \'ll be hyped again for sure when the next gen stuff commences.
-

Same goes for any system, pc or otherwise.. Nothing is original anymore. Everything is rehashes with better graphics. That’s why there is such a thing called genre. The games can be put in categories that have already been done. Now it’s just about what’s the prettiest and best story line driven.

20 here. I guess I just haven\'t had the time to sit down and enjoy a good game. But yeah, now that I think about it.... I will be a gamer for life.

My wife married me, knowing full well that I play video games and will be a video-gamer for the rest of our married life. :D She\'s better at fighting games than I am, though. :p

Damn. I dont know a single girl that can beat me in any game. Not that thats something special. I just find it amusing that she can beat you in a fighting game of all things (unless its a button masher).

What \'fighting games\' do you and your wife exactly play then ? And what kind of \'buttons\' do you mash !?
-
definitely gotta be a button masher...i remember playin my son in tekken and all he did was use low kicks...everytime i would try to grab or hit him, i\'d get whacked..i beat him but it actually takes some skill to beat a button masher..:p

PS2 is getting old, i only play 2 games as of now, SOCOM (which will never get old, well until people find out ways to cheat anyway.) and MVP baseball, which I dont play too much anyway.
Hopefully I\'ll get more into PS2 again when MGS3 and GT4 come out. Also I need PS2 to come out with a new RPG, FFXI gets too boring after a while.
