A veteran South Tucson police sergeant is under investigation for firing his stun gun to subdue a handcuffed 9-year-old girl.
At the request of Chief Sixto Molina, the Pima County Sheriff\'s Department is trying to determine if the sergeant committed a crime when he sent a jolt through the child\'s body.
The police officer used a Taser on the girl at about 5:30 p.m. May 8, Molina said. The nonlethal weapon uses a pulsating electrical charge to immobilize a person for several seconds.
"I\'ll be the first to admit, you\'ve got a veteran sergeant Tasing a 9-year-old girl, it doesn\'t look good," said Molina.
The sergeant was one of at least two officers who responded to a call from the Arizona Children\'s Home, a school for special needs children, on South Eighth Avenue, he said.
"It had to do with a runaway from the institution," the chief said. He declined to provide further details.
The school could not be reached for comment late Monday. But Molina said that the facility is the source of frequent calls to his 25-person department.
Molina said one officer initially responded to the call from the school. That officer requested assistance from another officer and specifically asked that the second officer bring a Taser.
He said the girl was handcuffed at the time the weapon was used.
The sergeant who used the hand-held Taser remains on duty. His name is not being released while the investigation is under way.
"It didn\'t involve an integrity issue," Molina said. "The officer made a decision to do what he thought he needed to do."
Deputy Dawn Barkman, a spokeswoman with the Sheriff\'s Department, confirmed a review of the incident is under way but said she had no further details.
The results of the probe will be forwarded to the Pima County Attorney\'s Office.
"They\'ll have to present it to us to see if any criminal charges are warranted," said County Attorney\'s Office spokesman Dan Benavidez.
Sgt. Dan Snyder, a South Tucson police spokesman, said the investigation could be complete by the end of the week.
Only thing I have to say is... anyone really thing it was reasonable to tase a 9 yr old already in cuffs?

I work with 6-7 year old, maybe I\'ll start bringing a taser to work for safety reasons.

That is totally uncessesary, especially as it was at a special needs school. This child obviously has some problems or learning difficulties and should have been dealt with in a more appropriate manner.

I really dont think it would be that far of a stretch to think he is a racist idiot. Not saying he was tho, as I do not know the race of either the girl or the officer.

Since the link only said the 9 years old is in a special school. Meaning she have learning difficulty and is mentally or physically handicapped.
So, it may not have to do with race but discrimination that she\'s handicapped?

And just so you all know.....statistically, there are far more blacks in jail than whites. But guess what? Most of those black people are jailed coz they committed a crime against another black person.

Surely Shock weapons are designed to restrain full grown adults.. and a not developing child.

Seriously taze the little bitch. If she is constantly getting out of hand and wooping up on everyone and the cops have to come out constatly. Then she obviously knows there is no reprecution. We set rules but then there is no recourse what does that say about the rules? Ill admit tazing is a bit over board but there has to be a point where these "special needs" kids have to have some reprecution. You all reading into this that special needs means special ed. As far as we know they could all be little hoodlums and there special needs is a warrant officer.

He did what he was trained to do, although a nine year old girl in hand cuffs is definitely not the smartest move. But we don\'t know exactly what she was doing in the hand cuffs, you can still do alot of sqwirming and kick and things of that nature in handcuffs. Full grown adult ok, 9 yo just poor judgement.

A veteran officer probably knows what he\'s doing. Although, if you have to use a taser to stop a 9 year old girl, you need to grow a pair of balls. Nothing subdues a kid better than the back of your hand :p

LOL the kid was in handcuffs unless she new some martial arts there is no need to taze the kid.

Is there really a need to spank children? Alot of people say NO but I disagree it needs to be done only on seriouse situations buy it one of the most effective ways for a parent to show reprecution for negative actions. Like I said tazing is perhaps a little overbored but that cant arrest her so its a way for the cops to show reprecution.

Little kids all do "bad" things soemtimes because they have not yet been forced to obey societys opinions of what is right and wrong. Spanking is not needed if you are a good parent, children are not that hard to deal with.

tru to a point but kids will try you to see how much they can get away with..i let my kids get away with stuff when they were like 4- 5yrs old now that they\'re a little older if they don\'t do what i tell them,..that ass is gettin\' whooped...you don\'t want your kids afraid of you but you want them to have that fear of the parent if they are about to do something they know that have no business doin\'..

Okay, I know children are hard to deal with, But I really don\'t think it is neccicary to hit them. All hitting them does is teach them what not to do, it doesn\'t teach them WHY not to do it.

y\'know a few years back i was at seaside heights, nj (it\'s the jersey shore..for those that don\'t know) and it was this white kid about 8 or 9 yrs old..they was arguing,..i came in on the tail end of it, but all i heard from him was "no mom i don\'t want to!" and he smacked the s**t out of her..i was like oh S**t! so the mother just looked in shock and said somethin\' like "jonathan!" and just stared at her..
i made a point to say the child was white because there\'s no way in hell a black parent would let s**t like that slide..it\'s tru that some kids in the urban set are up to no good, but trust,..those kids are gettin that ass whipped when they are doin somethin\' wrong...and wouldn\'t think about raisin their hand to their parent..

Which is why I don\'t understand why spanking is not illegal. I am in scouts and the kids that are in 8th grade up to my grade are respectable, a bit weird but respectable. The kids now in 5th and 6th grade would curse off the adults, me (I\'m a leader) and won\'t listen and do what they want and have no respect. That and they are all hopped up on Ridelin, which is over prescribed. I think they would be better if their parents weren\'t a) so rich, b) actually spent time with their kids. Parents in my town like neglect their kids (I live in a rich town but I live in the middle class area of the town which I really really like. Much nicer people in those areas. Everywhere else is snobs). Just my two cents.

Im 15, I do not have kids, But my 8 year old cousin is basically over my house 190 days a year, so I do see a lot of kids.
Yes, a lot of kids talk back to there parents. But parents are not always right. I think just as much can be achieved if you try and have patients with children, and try to explain things so they understand.

Clips I really want to say right off the bat that I have alot of respect for you and are one of the few people on here that I think I could hang with.... That being said and the father of two "white" children that whole thing was reaking with prejudice. A very good friend of mine (black) and his wife have a two year old boy and everytime you tell him no he yells NO NO NO NO and starts slaping you....... Almost to the point that I really dont want them coming around much because he is such a brat...
And for the spoiled children here who think hanging out with the younger cousin or little brother or sister counts for have some sort of knowledge about the subject EEEEEEEEENNNNNN WRONG!! You know nothing about it. I love my kids more than my life itself and I spanl my kids they are 8 and 5 but you know what I almost never have to spank them any more do you know why? Because I loved them and taught them that there is reprecution for wrong doing. That is exactly why kids today are soo terrible. They have no fear in authority the know if they do something wrong no one will do anything to them.

I will hit my children when they mess up, just as I was hit. This entirely new concept of "not hitting" your kids is a prime reason why so many delinquent kids are running rampant. Spanking your kid, does work. Beating your kid, doesn\'t.

well i respect you alot too bro..and how can i not? i gotta respect a man that likes a$$ shots almost as much as i do :p in all honesty i figured it might offend a few but that wasn\'t my intention. i only go by what i\'ve seen & experienced..but maybe i should\'ve just generalized parenting altogether, because ultimately it comes down to the parent & race really doesn\'t play a factor as you just described. so i apologize if i offended you there cy...:)

Define "out of line". Most the kids who get spanked don\'t even deserve it.
Most the parents I see who hit and scream at there kids all the time have no idea what they are doing, they just can\'t handle kids and do the quickest thing they can, which is to make the kid cry I guess.
I just know people who have bad parents that always hit them. Im not talking about little 5 year olds, older kids, like 12 years of age and stuff. It is just ****ed up thats all.

Once again, I\'m all for spanking a kid who misbehaves... However the lamest thing I\'ve ever seen was at work, I was taking out a lady\'s groceries, and she had like a 2 year old son. Well he was acting like a total moron like most 2 year olds are, and she got so fed up that she pinched the hell out of him on his arm. I was just like, "wtf, lady?".

I\'m actually with swif on this. If more kids were spanked, there would be more behaved kids out there. But taking away a PS2 or something like that would just send the kid into a tantrum which makes the parent fold. Spanking is harmless (aslong as you don\'t hit too hard). I\'m gonna spank my kids and take away privledges like games and stuff. I was spanked a couple times when I was little but mostly had things taken away and as a result, I\'m respectable and well behaved.

There is nothing wrong with two swift smacks on the rear to let a kid know you mean business. I don\'t understand how that can be damaging psychologically or anything. I\'ve seen so many talk shows with kids out of control, and its because the parents, NEVER HAVE HIT THEM. You gotta start young, the second the kid starts to show any signs of rebellion, you put them in their place.
