Title: BLEH on ati
Post by: THX on May 28, 2004, 09:28:31 PM
So I tried going back to ATi after seeing those sexy prices on used 9800 non-pro\'s.  I pretty much spent my whole Friday trying to get the damn card to work.  And now that I can play games on it, it loves to randomly reboot my system.

I\'m getting rid of it and sticking with nvidia.  It\'s a few more bucks extra but it just feels much more stable.

Sorry just venting, but I was really looking forward to playing everything at 4xAA with no problems.  arghhhhhh

On a related note, there\'s been a small controversy about the $175-199 Pro models: They\'re only 128-bit, and clocked lower.. so they\'re significantly slower than the normal 256-bit 9800 Pro (which\'ll run you around $~270~)

In your case, did you exhaust all of your options? It\'s well known that nVidia drivers can mess things up if you install another card.. and apparently they\'re a little difficult to remove. Before you send the card back, try using some driver-removal tools. Guru3D (http://www.guru3d.com) has them.

Yep, nvidia drivers can be a real prick to get rid off totally.  I haven\'t heard of people having those kind of problems with R9800 cards.   But each machine is different.

guy who sold it to me won\'t buy it back so I\'ll try buying a built by ATi radeon 9800 pro and switch them out.  Not sure if it\'ll help my stability problems but I\'ll have a better card to trade with towards a 5900...

ps- thanks for the driver tips, I actually found the wonderful program called Driver Cleaner after one of my many uninstalls of this card.

I have a 5950 and have had nothing but gaming goodness with it, so take that for what it\'s worth.

For the ppl who have plans on getting a new card @ $ 400 ;

I would recommend waiting for the GeForce 6800 GT. It sits between the 6800 and the 6800 Ultra and it outperforms the
X800 Pro in alot of cases, going by published test results.

It does still feature 16 pixel pipelines, pixelshader 3.0, it occupies only 1 slot and it consumes less power than the Ultra.

How much will it be?

Well, it is expected to be the direct competitor of the X800 Pro, which is priced at $ 399

Here\'s an article which shows why imho the 6800 GT is the better choice over the X800 Pro ;

I\'ve got a 9500 Pro and I\'ve never been able to run anything under FSAA or Ansio-whatever.

The graphics look fairly good but there are random artifacts and blank screens throughout the game.

I\'ve been running an 8500 since 2001, and the only game that I\'ve had any problems with is Halo. The game runs fine, but several objects are visible when they\'re not supposed to be. I\'ve never had any more trouble with ati or their catalyst driver suite than I had with nvidia and the then detnator driver suite.

Dl the sumbitch on Shareza or other P2P progs.  Pretty cool, the water effects on the Canal map is freak\'n awsome, when you start to go underwater the transition between above and under water is cool as hell.

NOt a HL2 leak question...but a PC gamer opinion question ;)

So in your eyes Omen and OTHERS ... mm esp... what level of card would you recommend to get themost out of this bad boy go\'s GOLD and is in the shops to buy :D...

Still got my Ge Force FX 5200... and have money set aside to upgrade to what ever card (within reason ££££ wise )HL2 wants...

I\'d say either get a 5950 or 9800pro, just keep an eye on slickdeals.net and wait for one to come at an incredible price.

Ooseven: Well, Valve strongly recommends an ATi card for HL2.

9800 Pro minimum.. 9800XT will be dropping shortly.. and the X800 Pro is out at $399. If you want the best card available, the X800XT is coming out at $499 this month.

Me.. personally.. I\'m going to wait.. (again) I\'m thinking of upgrading to a PCI-Express mobo and then getting the PCI-E X800XT. Kinda tough time to upgrade, because I\'ll probably have to get a new processor too.. due to the fact that I\'m probably moving back to AMD CPU\'s in the long-term..

TheOmen the 5950 is not a good card for HL2, any FX series card from NVIDIA will be a sad performer both visually and FPS wise for HL2. Remember the shader 2.0 performance in the FX cards is seriously crippled, not to mention the other problems.

So 007 stay away from any NVIDIA-FX line of cards if you plan on getting HL2

No thank you.
I think the last thing we need is Half-Life 2 leak material on the board.

TheOmen you do not fully understand what I am saying.

#1 You are playing a beta that is not even half done(shader 2.0 features etc...)

#2 I never said the FX can\'t play HALF-LIFE 2, what I am saying is that the FX line gives out poor visual Quality, especially when in DX9 mode, also it can\'t handle the shaders without a major performance Hit, (not in your beta). Remember what value said, the FX line is to be treated as a DX8 card in HL2, heck the 9600PRO is faster and produces better image quality in HL2 than the FX5950U. The NVIDIA FX line was a disaster for NVIDIA, they have corrected there mistake with the NV40. I understand that you own a 5950U so it\'s understandable that you want to defend it, but DUDE I’m just trying to give it to you straight up. Your card will not cut it visually/performance wise for HL2 unless you are willing to run it in DX8 mode.

Post by: theomen on June 08, 2004, 03:18:45 PM
ok, I thought you were saying that it wouldn\'t be able to run it.  and I\'m not defending it, I  have been pleased with it so I will recommend it, but if I ever feel thre need for something else, I will buy it.

Well... Yes I realize this is actually my first post on these forums so wahtever I say half the people will flame me no matter what I say.  But, I\'m sorry to say, all pre-X800 ATI cards are MUCH better than their Nvidia counterparts.  MUCH better.   First of all, Ati\'s quality in graphics is a lot better, and they run almost every program much faster.  Before you Nvidia freaks flip out on me go here :

That gives benchmarsk for a bunch of games, they measure accurately to what I\'ve benchmarked myself. I\'m an Ati freak, but just remember, until the 8500 I was a diehard nVidia fan, so don\'t be closed minded.

I\'m gonna admit one tihng though... I\'m nt at all impressed with the X800, and sadly,  the Geforce 6800 is not only more compatible, but faster in most cases than the Radeon X800....

My GF3 (now over 3 years old) can run the HL2 leak with a fair deal of success in low-res.. so?

What NVIDIA256 says is true. I mean, yeah.. you can run HL2 just fine on the 5950U. It just won\'t look quite as good as the 9800XT or run as well, but the 5950 is sufficient. It probably has the edge in Doom III, too.. another pro.

Delta: I\'m still on the fence about \'X800XT vs 6800U\'. The X800 is faster overall, for the time being.. but the 6800U hasn\'t been fully optimized by any means. It also supports SM3.0, and that\'s a huge selling point for those who wish to remain future-proof. (like me, with my newly found obsession with PCI Express)

Just an update, I got a new mobo that does 8xAGP.  This 5900 flashed @ 5950U works great, I love it and it scores higher than a 9800 non-pro oc\'ed passed XT speeds in Aquamark 3D.  Fraps also isn\'t locked at 25fps.  Since I had these two great cards at my house I spent much of the day comparing benchmarks.

Guess this makes me an nVidia fanboy, as I can\'t see myself going ATi in the near future.

I love mine, quite frankly I might hold off on buying a new card this generation as long as my 5950 holds up.
