Has anybody heard about this?
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A San Francisco gallery owner bears a painful reminder of the nation\'s unresolved anguish over the incidents at the Abu Ghraib prison - a black eye delivered by an unknown assailant who apparently objected to a painting that depicts U.S. soldiers torturing Iraqi prisoners.

Well....I\'m offended. That shiner I gave her was my own freedom of artistic expression!
*rubs fist* <----that\'s my paint brush, mm!

That\'s actually a rather disgusting post, Gman.
Do you really think that a man hitting a woman is funny?
-
That was pretty bad, funny or not Gman, but that artwork was produced for one purpose: to get a reaction out of people - probably not the kind she was expecting, but ended up getting.

No. But you need to lighten up and stop taking things so seriously. I swear....California is getting weirder by the day.

Whatever he says won\'t take back the guy hitting her, easy.

Pardon me for not having a sense of humor about this, but I don\'t think I\'m too far out of line. I was sincerely shocked and disgusted by this story. Some dipshit decided that he didn\'t like what he figured was an implied political statement in a painting of all things, so he decided to not only intimidate those involved in hosting the painting, but actually physically attacked a woman. That is one of the most cowardly things I can imagine. The SOB who did that is below scum.
Then we come to this forum where I constantly read posts about how people would like to beat the crap out of hippies and "tree-huggers," followed by a post making a joke about this particular assault. The fact that you find it funny makes me question whether you really wish you had been the attacker in that scenario, Gman.
No matter what your political beliefs are, you should be able to condemn actions like this.
1. US soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners was wrong.
2. Making a painting about the abuse is constitutionally protected free speech.
3. Inhibiting that freedom of speech through a physical assault is wrong and against the law.
If we can\'t agree on simple points like these, then I have no idea what chaos this country is headed toward.
-
You make strong statements that I agree with.
Honestly though, my first reaction was a chuckle when I read the topic line.
I didnt find out for a few days that a man hit a woman.

See? This is the kind of knee jerk reaction typical of sandal wearing tree huggers of California. If you read the path of the threads, I was responding to mm\'s statement. I was trying to be funny. What happened to the lady is sad...yadda yadda...I don\'t need to echo the usual responses.
So, if you are insinuating that "I wish I hit her and I feel no sympathy for the Iraqi prisoners"....then Mr. Michael Moore Wannabe, I feel sorry for you. You can spin it that way, I don\'t care. This forum is not something I take too seriously. We can argue all day in text form, it changes NOTHING in the real world.
Taking the things I say on the internet as seriously as you do, is retarded. *post pic of retard running* Hope you don\'t trip on yer shoe lace, Gumby.

Maybe you should save your jokes for the off topic forum, and subjects that aren\'t very important. They don\'t really fit in well with serious topics in the Current Events forum.

Ok guys... Gman - your comment was offensive - just imagine if the few women we do have here saw that? I know you were joking, but others do find that humor offensive. Core, yes there are serious topics here, but a dose of laughter never hurts - though Gman\'s wasn\'t appropriate. If you two wish to argue it further please do it in PM\'s.

Now if a woman hit some artsy guy....you all would laugh. I would. :) I\'m just not into double standard. Equal opportunity for all, I say.
The river of tears runs deep here, I notice.

Serious topics? Well, you better stop posting Michael Moore mockumentary replies, then!

A woman hitting a man and a man hitting a woman are not quite the same thing, as I\'m sure you know.
While we\'re on the subject of double standards, how would you feel if the painting in question was a portrait of George Bush heroically planting the US flag in the rubble at the world trade center site, and the woman gallery owner was punched in the face by a progressive anti-globalist protester? Would you also find that funny and post a joke about it?
I would find it equally offensive.

When I had first read this, for some strange reason i got the idea that this gallery happened to be in the middle east. When i found out that it was in San Fran I couldnt believe it. Actually threatening somebody to close their shop up etc? Thats just rediculous. I was somewhat dissapointed to hear that she was just packing up and leaving.
Im not a hardcore artist and all for the whole let expression not be censored and all of that, but id definately make a stand against that kinda bull. In this day and age im surprised that this even happened. Especially in America.
