They\'re Japanese schoolgirls actually, but no matter.

Anime is very subjective.  Mature anime is fine, but there are plenty out there, much like some of the stuff Disney and (all of) Pixar does is just that.  Just the same, however, I would like to reccommend Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies, and Macross Plus (movie or short 4-part series, whichever is more your thing).  I also heard good things about Tokyo Godfathers.

Anime spans entire series however and many can be picked up now over bittorrent that are fan-subbed and have yet to be licensed.  There is definitely quality anime to watch out there other then the short two hour DVD movies you seem to be looking for.  I\'ll open that up if you want to hear any reccommendations of those, but I won\'t bother if you\'re not even familiar with bittorrent.

[Edit] -- You can download like three or four of the story parts of the Animatrix off thematrix.com site to see if you like it.  I don\'t really reccommend the DVD as such as it\'s one of those videos you watch once and forget about it with the exception of the Second Rennaiscance which is up for download on the official site.

Spirited Away is my favorite anime

As far as action goes I still haven\'t seen anything more stylish and fun as Ninja Scroll.  Can anyone name one that beats it?

ps- honorable mention for Fist of the North Star.  Reminds me of the Matrix a lot, minus all the goth type outfits ;)

I liked the Record of Lodoss War series.. it\'s a bit different.. more like medieval times. Metropolis is pretty good, Spriggan, Bastard, Cowboy Bebop, Blood the last vampire... lots of good stuff, but it all depends on taste.

Anime, even "mature" anime, has so many different styles, that you have to watch many different animes to figure out what you like.  I like some of the \'kids\' anime too, Castle in the Sky is a disney anime, that I rather liked... it\'s made in the spirited away style.

Cowboy Beebop is good stuff IMO.... But yeah, im not really "into" anime as much as these other guys. And what\'s that one I see on cartoon network now with the wolves? I only saw one episode but it looked decent.

Where do you all get yer anime and hear about it?

I\'d be interested in buying some more anime.

oh and FLCL is pretty good too heh.

Dragonball Z?  I used to love that show when it was in its prime on Cartoon Network (1999) but I came to realize every new plot is the same.

http://www.virtualroofie.com/flash/dbz.htm

I still think Vegita is one of the coolest anime characters around.

Toriyama hit a lull with the Buu saga...that shit got old QUICK.

Vegeta...what a badass. Him and Picollo were my two favorites, until of course they started making Picollo into a bystander, which blew. Before that, he was a badass.

See Yuz.

spirited away

wicked city

animatrix--i tried to download this from the site as ryu suggested but i don\'t have quicktime..

ninja scroll--have to get this again for reasons stated earlier

blood the last vampire--i saw this on cable a week ago..i liked the art style..came in on the tail end of it tho so i really don\'t know much about the story..

oh and i must pick up the original street fighter :p i thought that was pretty decent...

and what is FLCL?

i\'ve seen a few here mention dragonball z..it\'s tru that it\'s the same recycled plot over & over..only series i liked from it was when everybody was gettin that ass whooped by cell...other than that..each episode drags on painfully until you get to a fight scene.

it wouldn\'t be so bad if the story was fully realized in some way,..but it\'s not,..everything that goes on in it seems like filler until the next fight scene...

Basic plot:

Young teens older brother goes to play baseball. Crazy guitar-weidling chick arrives and starts trouble. Theres this weird girl who likes sex too. and it involves guitars and big robots.

its crayz. i dont even understand it. it just is too crazy!!!

clips- add Fist of the North Star to your list.  Not as story-rich as the others but worth a view once youu\'ve seen the rest.

Agreed. One of the best IMO (that is if you are really into cars and underdogs. That and you dont mind the old animation style and cg).

I hate to bring up old threads but I just started the Naruto series and i have to say that so far its pretty damn good. Its been a while since ive seen any decent anime and id definately suggest that you give this a look. Its a little under the Maturity of say GitS but its good.

I think you are looking for movies and its a pity that box sets cost so much. The GitS series (stand alone complex) isnt too bad either. There are so many animes that go unnoticed or people think poorly of them. Ill just list a couple oldies:

Macross Plus Volumes
Iria Volumes
Tank Police (original and New Dominion)
MD Geist is a little old but its nice and bloody

wait... sorry. Im on a series/volume mode. Metropolis is ok. I guess it depends on what you are into.

Nice. Right now im caught up watching just anime tv shows. Initial D, Naruto, Bleach and Macross 7 are ones that im still watching more or less.

Clips if you like the matrix and all that sort of deep shit then i seriously recommend the Animatrix. I have it on my computer after my DVD died. If you can find it for cheap then i think you would like it.

Its difficult to reccomend Anime on the same level and content as Akira and GitS and i dont feel like listing off a crap load of titles but try out Ghost in the Shell 2. I havent seen it personally and i heard mixed reviews but if you can rent it check it out and let me know what you think.

I liked Appleseed. The only problem is that the characters dont seem very expressive.

Post by: clips on March 27, 2005, 06:04:12 AM
yea nicon when i get the chance i\'ll check out gits 2...only reason why i might be skeptical about it is because in some reviews it stated that the main character (forgot her name) was barely in it. and that the main focus was on her partner..and imo i didn\'t think he is a strong enough character to hold a movie...but i\'ll check it out..

and i still want animatrix..it\'s just that i can\'t find it...

uni...appleseed? that deals with like giant robots right? i used to be in to that stuff..robotech, voltron, then i just lost interest...but the only movie i liked concerning robots was transformers the movie.
