Title: Just installed a Zalman fan speed controller
Post by: THX on June 02, 2004, 04:10:18 AM
I upgraded to a fancy graphics card which increased the noise level but this focker makes things super quiet.

Check out my page (http://mywebpages.comcast.net/donaldbl/kungfu52/htpics/index.html) for pics of it.  Still dreaming of inexpensive liquid cooling...

Tanks, they\'re at newegg for $25 + shipping.  Was doing research and unforunately there\'s not many options for quality ones like the Zalman.  I was eyeing the Maelstrom Baybus (http://store.yahoo.com/directron/maelstrom.html) but it costs more, doesn\'t have as many controls, and comes with no faceplate.

I\'m using the little rheobus that came with my case. Nice little thing.  Does the job. :)

Yea my friend has that exact model.  Problem is when you turn it down you hear a humming or buzzing.  The reviews at Newegg show people noticing the same thing.

That and it fits in a 3.5" slot and I don\'t have one.

that one up there is a 5.25 model not 3.5.

Yes that model does come in a 3.5 varient, however people have told me that the 3.5 is not as good as the 5.25

Alos you wanna see a real rheobus check this out

Ah, I hope the 5.25 doesn\'t have the buzzing problem.

Looks interesting, software control is where fan speed should be at but not for 79_damn_dollars.

I personally think motherboards should be designed to control fan speeds. I\'m not talking QFan sh@t either.   A little software app should come with your mobo, that has sliders that allow you to turn off or down your fan speeds + more fan connectors on the mobo. Not 2 or 3, but at least 6.

The rheobus i\'m using is kinda a mix between hardcano 9 and 12.  You can\'t buy it without getting the damier case too.

My pc has ;

2 x 120 mm fans ; 1 at the back and one at the HD
1 x Zalman7000cu on the P4 cpu

My Antec Sonata case has these \'fan-only\' molexes
which were made to regulate, like aforementioned devices ;
the fanspeed. But I don\'t care about a bit noise, I just
want good cooling, especially when Cinema4D or Maya
is rendering for hours.

THX what are you PC specs?  I do like that $79 rheobus.  On an unrelated note, I am buiding my wife a new PC - have everything except the mobo and processor - I was looking at an Athlon XP due to price, question... is there a huge difference perfomance wise between an XP and an Athlon 64?

I think they\'re all 64-bit now.  The fastest 32-bit XP I see on Newegg is the 3200+ for $187.  I guess anything under $180 go with XP, anything over go with 64.

Anandtech (http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=2038&p=4) shows the 2800+ 64 edges out the 3000+ XP.

I upgraded my mobo and Asus has this Smart AI overclocking thing, allowed me to get to 2.9ghz out of a 2.4 northwood.

64bit range are faster then XP cpus, but cost more etc.
 Theres no XP 64 bit cpus.  Not that i\'ve heard of anyway.
