The CD player in my T-bird is starting to become a pain in the ass. Its skipping my discs (discs are perfect by the way. I take good care of them), spitting them out and saying error (again, no damage to the discs), changes the volume when I restart my car and today it changed tracks when I didn\'t even touch it. It also changes from FM to AM on its own. I want a new one. I know nothing about car audio and what to get in a CD player. Educate me. These are the few I\'m looking at now. I am planning to put in a subwoofer (my brother is giving me his eventually). Can I put it with any head unit or will it need to be compatable. I\'m very ignorant when it comes to car audio and need to learn as much as possible before I put some in.

Those are 4 that I saw that were kind of cool. I like the Kenwoods.

Go with the first Kenwood if those are your choices. For your next system you should look into an Alpine, but the good ones start at $250 street price.

The sub will go with any head unit, but THX is right that you might want to save a little extra cash to go for a better head unit, like the kind he recommended.
When I bought mine, I went for something simple because I don\'t need a tv screen on it or a crappy video of a dolphin swimming, so put the money you save by skimping on those things and toward an Alpine.
The other thing that you\'ll likely want with a head unit and sub woofer is an amp. The morep owerful the amp, the bigger the battery drain, the louder the music, and the easier it is to blow the sub woofer when you get carried away, heh.
That\'s about the most specific I can be, when I got my system I had a couple "experts" help me and my main concern was the price cap.

Stay away from crutchfield. They have GREAT service, but are usually MUCH pricier. On average, I save $100-$200 shopping elsewhere.
Questions though.
How far are you going with this?
MP3 playback?
Price range?
As for suggestions, these are all great.
I have this in one of my cars (http://www.autotoys.com/x/catalog/ALPINE_CDA_9813_MP3_p_517.html)
This one in another car (http://www.autotoys.com/x/catalog/PIONEER_DEHP9400_MP3_p_507.html)
last years model of this in the closet..was pretty decent too (http://www.autotoys.com/x/catalog/KENWOOD_KDCMP822_MP3_p_526.html)

Just avoid "Prestige" like the plague. Horrible, horrible, horrible CD player.

Very true in most cases but for his first system Crutchfield may *save* him money. With the illustrated guides CF includes you can install your new car stereo with no problem and even emit manly grunts after you see your finished work.
You can get the ones you posted close to $50 cheaper new online, but Best Buy & Circuit City will charge at least $60 to install a head unit + wiring harness(es).
Install your first system yourself, either with Crutchfield or http://www.installdr.com

hahaha, that gave me a chuckle. u da man, I hate people nutting over small @ss animated displays.

Those displays are kinda nifty even though I hardly use em on the pioneer.
Id rather have the sony that you can up load your own personal color pictures..(read porno) but I vowed to never buy another sony HU again.

I don\'t think I need a 300 dollar head unit like the alpine one that THX posted (very nice though. I\'ll consider it). I also don\'t need an amp, seeing that I don\'t go down the street blasting my music. I just want something I can crank up but not blast on full. Not sure about MP3 playback. If it comes with it, that\'s great. I\'ll probably get one that I can get MP3 playback, but if I don\'t, it\'s not the end of the world. I\'m looking to spend no more than like 250 (but I\'m considering the Alpine). I\'m also only using Crutchfield as a place to look for the head units, not necessarily buy. I know they are a bit pricey.

Meh... you\'ll want an amp and some subs. :)
-
I wonder why everyone doesnt.
People just always assume amps and subs= a Suburban with 4 18\'s and 1500 watts RMS.
A nice 5 channel amp with a single 10 or 8 sounds very nice and would not be very loud at all.
Besides, if it\'s too loud, turn it down.
I just love the clarity adding power creates. The bass certainly doesnt hurt either.

Yes it\'s a drug. I thought I bought my dream system with Focal components, a single $300 sub and some nice amps... but I still ain\'t satisfied and don\'t think I ever will be :o
I have an Alpine that does MP3/WMA but I never use it like I thought I would. MP3s sounds different (bright) when this unit decodes it, so I stick with old fashioned cd.

Very true but I only have 400 dollars total and I\'m spending money on other things too. I have the room for the amp and sub woofers (and I do plan on getting a woofer) but I have no desire to crank it up and go down the street. But I do need a woofer and my brother is giving me his eventually. Its one speaker basically. Its good enough for me. Nothing I need an amp for, I guess if I get a powerful enough head unit (again, I\'m probably wrong).

Ikesound is a great reliable place to find good deals.
The autotoys site i linked from before has nice deals on most things.
