Title: Recommend a movie...
Post by: Living-In-Clip on June 06, 2004, 10:11:43 PM
Alright - here is the deal, recommend a movie, post why you should watch the movie and only serious posts. None of this watch \'Glitter\' becaus it sucks posts..You know what I\'m talking about..

(1) Hero  - It still has not made it to American Shores, but if you are resourceful you can find the DVD for sell online. Great flick , much better than \'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon\', which I felt was overrated.

(2) Lady Snowblood - If you remotely liked \'Kill Bill\', then check this film out. It is painfully obvious that this film inspired Tarintino\'s current hit. Animego recently just put out a great Region 0 release of this.

(3) Kung Pow: Enter the Fist - Great comedy. Silly, stupid and a blast.

(4) Fear and Loathing: In Las Vegas - A damn classic. Check out the Criteion DVD of it.

(5) RAN - There is a lot of talk about Kurosawa on this board, but it is usually about his films such as \'Yojimbo\', but I personally thinkg RAN is one of his finest films, that I have seen. I still need to check out \'Throne of Blood\' though.

(6) Last House on the Left - Wes Craven would become known for the \'Nightmare on Elm Street\', but I personally think this film is his finest work. However, it is only of interest if you like explotation films.

(7) Zatoichi - The original one. It\'s a slow film, but it sets the pace for one ot he longest running franchises .

(8) Zatoichi (2003) - The newest entry isn\'t perfect, but it is still worth a watch and can be found on DVD.

If the thread gets enough legit posts, I\'ll dig some more up and I\'m sure Capcom can dig in his massive collection and recommend some also.

Chopper (http://www.imbd.com/title/tt0221073)

Great Australian movie. May not be for everyone, but it\'s definately worth a watch. As long as you can get past all the 80\'s Australianism.

Eric Bana in his first dramatic role (and his only decent one) is amazing. He once claimed (due to his comedic background) that he can\'t act, but he can certainly impersonate. Which he does wonderfully in this film. His character is so real, intriguing and entertaining, not to mention truely bizarre. If you can get your hands on it, it\'s well worth it.

Fight Club--Good movie all the way around
Blow--One of Johnny Depp\'s best roles(fear and loathing is another good one)
Very Bad Things--I don\'t know what it is but I like this movie, it\'s dark and stuff.
Usual Suspects--A mind blowing "kick in the ass" movie(if you\'ve seen it, the ending is good)

I think the idea of the thread is to recommend movies that most of us haven\'t seen already.

I think The Usual Suspects is aired on commercial television every second Friday night.. or something. It\'s either that, or Stripes.

Not too many of my friends know about the movie so that\'s why I posted it and ya you are right it\'s usually on Spike Tv or something but it\'s edited tho\' I don\'t think you miss much.  I\'ve also seen SLC Punk--not too bad.

They showed a trailer for it before Kill Bill 2... I went looking for the dvd after, but I decided I wanted to see it at the movies.

Here\'s mine: Iron Monkey, Twin Warriors, The Legend, other Jet Li films.. I dig the "fake flying around" kinda kung fu movie, and all of these fit that type of genre.

oh and Shaolin Soccer! :)

If you haven\'t seen it. then GET.

To End all Wars

Very powerful WW2 film about the prisoners at a Japanese POW camp.

with Robert Carlye & Kiefer Sutherland.

Its based on the true accounts of Captian Ernest Gordon who was captured by the japanese and forced to build the "rail way of death" through the jungles of burma and siam.

I challange anyone to watch this film and NOT be moved by the film...

Almost any movie starring any combination of Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao, Yuen Wah, and Jackie Chan, with their stunt teams...

My Lucky Stars
Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars
Dragons Forever
Wheels on Meals
Project A
Eastern Condors

All with top notch action and starring 2, 3, or even all 4 of the above mentioned actors...

Movies with just one brother but recommended are:

Police Story 1 & 2 - Jackie Chan
Pedicab Driver - Sammo Hung
Project A-2 - Jackie Chan
Once Upon A Time In China - Yuen Biao

OUATIC stars Jet Li as well so you can\'t go wrong with that one...

- Love Liza
- Owning Mahoney
- Sex & Lucia
- Y Tu Mama Tambien (sexy movie)
- The City of Lost Children
- Amelie
- Run Lola Run

- Brazil
- A Thousand Clowns (1965 flick, similar to Fight Club in some aspects)
- About Schmidt
- O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Here are a few more

1. Cronos. The same director that did hellboy.

2. Manhunter. I only suggest this because some think silence of the lambs is the first in the series.

3.Ginger Snaps 1 and 2. One of the few great werewolf flicks.

4. Zombi. The argento cut of Dawn of the Dead. The way it is cut takes out quite a bit of the humor. I realize most of you have seen Dawn, but I consider Zombi a different movie.

5. Filthy Mcnasty. It is very low budget, but it is great. It is the movie where I pulled my sig off of. Phil your signature indirectly came from that movie also.

6. A tale of two sisters. Korean horror I think. It is somewhat like the sixth sense.

7. JU-ON. A story about a haunted house.

8.  Versus. Great action-zombie flick.

9. Squirm. A horror movie about killer worms. For it not to totally suck  it has to make my list. A note about the movie. They electrocuted countless worms in this film to make them move in an abnormal mannerism.

10. Brain Damage. A worm-like parasite named Aylmer latches into Brian\'s (Rick Herbst) neck and offers to inject his brain with a hallucinogenic fluid, giving him pleasurable psychedelic experiences. There\'s one catch…to keep the high, Brian has to keep feeding Elmer his favorite food…human brains.

11. Blood Feast.   When Mrs. Fremont hires crackpot Egyptian cultist Fuad Ramses to cater a party for her daughter, Suzette, she commits the culinary catastrophe of the century! Fuad immediately prepares a BLOOD FEAST made from the grisly body parts of nubile young women. Borrowing the leg of a gal taking a bath, the brains of a woman making out on the beach, and the tongue of a sexy blonde, Fuad and his machete plan on adding suzette to the main course ...I think this movie was banned in some european country 45 years after it was made. It has to be a first.

12. May An outcast lady with a lazy eye decides she is going to make the perfect man by killing multiple men and using the parts to create her perfect man.

13. The eye. A chinese version i think of final destination sort of. Easiest description I can think of. It has a great scene of a city block blown up.

14. Head of the Family. God the chick in it is hot. Movie is not all that, but it is whack it material if I have ever seen it.

15. Night of the Demons. An old abandoned funeral home built on cursed ground. A group of kids go to the mortuary on halloween night. Where the demons slowly take over the kids one by one killing them as they go. It also has a scene of lipstick going into a girls boobie.

16. Dog Soilders. Quite a few of the europeans here probably know it. Not a bad werewolf flick.

17. Mosquito Coast. The story of a man getting away from civilization.

18. The Ice Storm  Kevin Kline, Joan Allen and Sigourney Weaver turn in crystalline performances as two dysfunctional families learn to cope with the unyielding forces of nature - human nature - in this emotionally charged tale of suburbia in the 70\'s. When a self-centered husband\'s relationship with his wife and mistress grow cold, it takes a wife-swapping "key party" and a freak ice storm to clear their loves forever.

19. Apt Pupil A nazi\'s secret is found out by a teenager. He uses the secret to blackmail the nazi to hear the old stories. In the end the youth becomes somthing else.

20. Sleepaway camp. It is camp murders with a twist. If you have not seen this movie. You should atleast give it a rent.

21. Martin An intelligent vamp flick. IMHO

22. The dentist  A dentist that goes mad when his wife starts cheating on him. Great drill scene.

23. Return of the Living dead 1 and 2. Great spoof of the zombie genre. BRAINS!!!!

That is what I can think of right off the top of my head. I would recommend BioZombie also. Lic mentioned it. Great japanese zombie flick.
