Title: Internet death...
Post by: CHIZZY on June 08, 2004, 08:41:18 AM
One of my favorite guys on another forum died on sunday. I am shocked and sad. He was only 46 and had a heart attack in the middle of typing a PM to another forumite. Later his daughter saw it on his screen and finished it up by telling him that her father had just died. The guy was a mod, and (I feel) very central to the forums.

That said, I was wondering how you are supposed to feel about internet friends. I didn\'t really know him, just a few kind replies and a PM or three...

Also, who at these forums would you truly feel a loss over if they died? I mean, who would you truly miss?

I think I would be bummed if vid cashed out, definitely kopking and ooseven, too.

I also have left instructions to my wifey how to let you peeps know if I buy the farm.

Stapler, shockwaves, ROL Jamas, and probably Bozco. Particularly because I have spoken with them through instant messaging. Its hard to really connect through a forum, but if you truly talk to the people through other methods then I\'d be sad if they bit the dust. Stapler is a special circumstance since he\'s my friend in real life anyways.

well,..i haven\'t been here as long as most in here but i kinda think of you internet cats sort of like my parents..you feel that they are going to live forever...i\'d wonder what it would be like say 15-20 yrs from now & i happen to come back to these forums...mm would probably add another m to his name,..theomen would probably change his name to thesaint! :p

even tho i don\'t know any of you cats personally, i would feel down a bit if i came in here & something tragic happened to anyone in here that resulted in death...that\'s right i said anybody..including spudz! :p

not that i hate him or anything, it\'s just that some here don\'t like him & that if something bad happened to him such as death, even tho he can be an a$$hole at times, i\'d still feel a bit touched by it..

personally wouldn\'t be upset or miss anyone here if they died. Because they\'re not really part of my life to begin with.

Its is sometimes strange how we can connect to people we have never meet in person.

But being the last person to "talk" to someone before they die can be traumatic, but to do it when they pass can be even more so..esp when your powerless to help.

The person i feel more sorry for is the daughter for finding her fther..hope the rest of the family are managing to cope with the loss.

I just had sort of a similar experience. A member of my clan on Socom 2 recently died in a car accident, and im sure he was only in his early twenties. It was very depressing for me, although I didn\'t know him, but I\'d actually heard his voice like every week for the past few months, so it was actually sucked more then one would expect.

He was actually a personal friend of many people in my clan, which made it even worse. But also, I would hate for anyone on the internet, or these forums to pass away. It\'s kinda a fear of mine that people I know quite well might die, and i\'ll never know. O.o

Anywaysssss, yeah.

I would be very sad if virtually any of you kicked the bucket.  Knowing you died would be a lot different than if you were to just leave.  Notice how I said virtually?  Hehehe.  Gives me an out.

It\'s funny because just leaving this forum is kind of like dying, but not quite.

Take Adan for example.  It sucks that he was a big pussy and left.  He should have sucked it up for the 3 days of ribbing and then carried on.  I don\'t feel sorry for him at all.  But if he died I would certainly feel bad.

Yeah id feel pretty bad if somebody here died.... Well except for spudz, jk:p. Maybe its just the mood set by your post CHIZZ, but that whole situation was just damn sad. I mean the guy was in the middle of a PM and he dies and his daughter finishes it saying that he died? Thats just sad and to some degree, very movie-esque.

IDK. Perhaps i wouldnt feel as strongly about it but i wouldnt know untill it happened. Im sure i wouldnt be missed... 1 of the 3 black guys on the forum died..... meh.   j/k

If any of you kicked the bucket, I would feel down. Everyone here has a unique personality, and it just wouldn\'t be the same with someone missing (and knowing that their family is missing them also).

I\'d be saddened also, to an extent, more some than others.

no way... he was an institution at those forums. Well-liked, respected, venerable...a former army captain. The "Bjorn" of those forums renamed their "off topic" section in memory of him.

There\'s also a sword that was being built to his specs that is named for him.

I had 2 internet friends die last year, one in march from leukemia, and the other in november in a car crash.

I think it\'s fair to say that because they are not personal aquaintances, there is no real grieving process, though you do feel a certain level of sadness knowing that someone you got to know has passed away.

Obviously, because of the nature of the way bonds like this are made, there is a lot of scope for fraudulent claims, but to be honest, once you get to know someone as well as I got to know them, you begin to realise that they are not into the habit of lying over such things.

The guy that was killed in the car crash also had personal friends who I talk to on a regular basis, and it was them who broke the news.

The real sad part, was that the girl who died of leukemia was only 19, and she had her whole life in front of her before she developed it over a period of several months, she didn\'t even tell us that she was ill, instead only told 1 other person who was her closest friend. She thought that if we found out, we would not want anything to do with her.

Just like me. I don\'t have leukemia but I\'m pretty sick. I don\'t want to get into it.

I have a lot of internet friends. A lot of them I feel like I know and it would be tough to lose any of them. A friend is a friend, right?

It\'s kind of weird but I think sometimes you can know a person a hell of a lot more through one of these boards or chat rooms than you will in person when people tend to act differently.

Bah. I don\'t know you, and you don\'t know me. I could care less if any of you die. Internet friends are a good way to waste time when bored. Nothing more.

There are a few guys I\'d miss if they died, the effect would\'ve been much worse a few months ago when I was in daily contact with a bunch of guys here, but lately I and some of those guys have been somewhat distant from the forums.

^^^i can see how you would say that capcom(referring to d.h.) but i think you misunderstood it...he\'s saying i think that people in the forums are much cooler than some people in real life...meaning people in real life when you meet them can a$$holes...

Yes, there are people I like in real life. It is much easier to find people that are more likeable on the internet. There are just more people on the internet, and you usauly happen to run into people who have similar interests.

And I don\'t care if it\'s sad or not, people on the internet are just generally good/interesting people.  Let me put it this way, the % of people who can hold decent conversations without seeming mornic is a LOT higher on the internet then in high school.

On another forum, a girl that posted very little and never posted after I registered died. One of her closest friends was an admin and told us. I was bummed out. Someone I didn\'t know and yet I felt for. It\'s really strange. If anyone died on this board, I would definitely be depressed.

He was only 17 and died of some intestinal error (forgot what organ) which noone knew about. The other guy is still fujax and plays a lot wa good friends with the guy that died and went to the same school and whatnot. he was the one that told us.

people like capcom seem to be forgetting that \'internet\' friends are actually real people. What makes people who use the internet any different to people in real life who don\'t?

It was like an episode of Ricki Lake where she was saying dont date creepy people from the internet, yet I bet the majority of people in her audience, including herself and her staff, also use the internet. Does that make them creepy?
