This is outrageous. All that stuff is great in the PS2 but I just wanna play games and I don\'t wanna pay the extra money. If it\'s gonna be like this I\'m just gonna get an Xbox2 or Gamecube2. I\'ll let teh article speak for itself if you don\'t know what I\'m talking about. Prepare to be shocked.

It wont happen... Thats what the PSX is for.
-
Ahm....the PS2 was around $600 when it was released mind
-
Yeah, I paid Dutch Fl. 1149,- for my launch PAL PS2. That\'s about 550 - 600 Euro\'s or US Dollars. So.. don\'t complain.
-
I\'ve heard people talking about Sony releasing 2 different PS3 versions. One with that\'s very basic and only plays games. Another that has a bunch of added features (and price). I\'d definately get the cheap one, I only want one to play games, not record an episode of the Simpsons.

-
Good luck Sony :) Unless Microsoft charges that much, the company is screwed.

Juslight and a buddy of ours waited in line till 12:00 to get the PS2 the day it was released.
They payed $299.00
I purchased during the second wave and got mine for $500 with 4 games.
I dont remember anyone paying $500 for their PS2.

I\'m not worried in the slightest. It\'s just rumour after all.

So just shut up everybody. Its not like we have a choice:p

Wanna bet? No way in hell I\'m dropping $500 on a *console.* Then there\'s the $35 mem card, $40 component/HDMI cables, $35 per extra controller, $30 remote, $50 games...
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Like MP said, there will probably be a "basic" version that just plays games with no HD-TIVO functions. Sounds like a plan.
-
IF you want a tivo, get a tivo.
-
whats a tivo?

It\'s a HDD system that lets you record TV shows and even "pause" a live broadcast and pay it back when ever you want.
You can also programme it will a full listing so that you never miss any of your TV SHOWS.
fpr example ..if you like the WEST WING...then you can programme it to record every show thats broadcast without you having to press record at the start of EVERY show.
-
hard-disk based VCR. Basically records your favorite shows so whenever u turn on the tube ur watching something u actually want to watch.
They also have a neat feature where u just type in a person\'s name, ie- Frank Sinatra, and every performance or TV show he\'ll be on will be recorded automatically.
-
Thats it in a nut shell...
SKY (our Satallite TV company)
Do
SKY + which is just the same as Tivo... but with the exception that you can record two shows that are broadcast at the same time on two seprate stations...
For example you can record the Tennis from Wimbledon 2004 on BBC 1 ...at the SAME time as a Flim on Sky movies 5...
-
When ps3 if it does have tivo I don\'t think there will be two versions at launch of the system.
Probably later down the line it would be a second version. But I don\'t think two version will be at the launch of the system.
-
Probably the PSX is an effort to broaden the use and availability of that hardware function and technology so it will get cheaper in the future for use in later products at lower costs like the PS3.
-
Ugh.. damn Sony.. many gamers just want a console with specs which guarantees the best fvcking games.
Imo all that high end AV tech should only be there to increase the tecnical quality of the games, not becuz of all things multmedia in one machine.
-
Everyone has a DVD player, and many are buying other devices for other entertainment purposes as well.So what they are doing is trying to establish a product that is demanded by two kinds of consumer by offering a product that needs less room, offers more functions and with less money. They are targeting the consumer\'s preferences with one product. If they succeed the "playstation" brand name becomes even more popular, and a name to be seen everywhere as well as selling a multimedia product that is prefered more than competing products.
Imagine if a consumer wants to buy a multimedia package like a Tivo or even a DVD and sees a product that is already famous becuase it carries the "playstation" brand name.
We are talking about a console that sells more becuase of a multimedia package thanks to the consumer that wants multimedia entertainment, and a multimedia package that sells more becuase of the console brand name thanks to the gamers. The differece is that its a 2 in one product
They want to merge the two industries.
It didnt work with the PS2 though since its DVD function wasnt good. But the PSX seems it\'s trying to be just that,Ken envisioned the next "playstaion" next to every TV as the ultimate entertainment system.I believe thats what they are targeting.A multimedia package and a gaming console in one and each use evolving and improving from 2 separated entertainment industries.
-
Paragraphs dood, paragraphs! Hitting enter once does count :p
-
is it ok now? :D
-
sony is not gonna sell a machine for 500 in the u.s. 2nd the psx did not sell well in japan so why try & mix the two? they\'re becoming a little over ambitious with what they want to do...don\'t they know that by the time they crap all this latest technology into a console it will be outdated & replaced by a stand alone unit that will do it for far less?
the ps2 was supposed to have all these other functions from the door..it didn\'t..sony just needs toi take one step at a time...
-
I ve heard that it was sold out when it was released
Anyways if it sold or not its irrelevant. It didnt exactly carry the Playstation brand name as a strong motivation and it wasnt a demanded product or offered anything new to the console gaming. The reason why it was released is the subject here.
Sony is indeed taking one step at a time. They didnt feature many of the functions they were planning with the PS2 and some of them that appeared, appeared periodically. Its a product sold as a console with very very limited multimedia features
Then its PSX which is sold as a multimedia device not a console that has PS2 functions.
Its a merge in progress I believe. The PS3 will be highly demanded whether it has multimedia functions or not by gamers. And with PS3 selling well, multimedia functions of the device will be selling at the same amount.
Imagine 60 millions owners owning a device with both the "Playstation" brand name strong and its view as a multimedia product.
Imagine PS3s which wouldnt be just consoles anymore appearing on every Sony shop replacing DVD\'s etc. They will probably replace many DVD players or multimedia devices from competitors in many households as well if they manage to succesfully establish it as a gaming and multimedia device at the same time.I am 100% thats what they are envisioning with the PS3 since they see the increasing popularity and astonishing sales compared to competitors.
Not just a console. But one product that will lead 2 industries.Come to think of it that might eveb reduce their expenditures in marketing and production.
-
^Sounds good as long as it\'s $299 or lower. I don\'t care what else it does, I\'m buying it for the games. If it\'s a high end dvd player at no extra cost then I\'m all for it.
What other multimedia devices could it replace?
EDIT: Nevermind, I see somebody mentioned Tivo.
-
The PSX I think has some Tivo functions too or am I mistaken.Someone correct me if I am wrong.
-
How much did it sell for?

I think around $500...so this price range seems like it could be the same for the PS3. But again...I\'m gonna wait and see. I don\'t mind paying that much for the system.
EDIT: Ginko, is that Avatar from the new Fur Fighters game? Cuz it kicks ass...
-
$500...plus a memory card, plus a couple games, extra controller. Honestly, I\'d have to sit out until it came down in price.
:D The avatar is from Conker Reloaded...I can\'t wait for that game!!
